KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Tyler Reddick solidified his championship aspirations with a dominant performance in NASCAR Cup Series qualifying at Kansas Speedway on Saturday, capturing his third pole of the 2026 season and the 14th of his career. The 23XI Racing driver’s blistering lap of 29.142 seconds narrowly edged out his team owner, Denny Hamlin, by a scant 0.019 seconds, leading a formidable Toyota sweep of the top three starting positions.
The strong showing from Reddick, who currently leads the championship standings, underscores a remarkable run for both the driver and the 23XI Racing organization. This pole-setting achievement follows a significant partnership announcement with Rockstar Energy just days prior, adding another layer of momentum to their season.
Hamlin’s second-place qualifying effort, a mere fraction of a second behind his teammate, highlights the potent combination of driver and machine for the Joe Gibbs Racing-affiliated team. Rounding out the impressive Toyota contingent in the top three was Ty Gibbs, the recent victor from last week’s race, who secured the third starting spot.
Chevrolet’s top contender in qualifying was Kyle Larson, who will start fourth, followed by Chase Briscoe in fifth. The remainder of the top ten qualifiers included Carson Hocevar, Chris Buescher, Daniel Suarez, Ryan Blaney, and Bubba Wallace, demonstrating a diverse field of contenders vying for victory at the 1.5-mile oval.

Reddick expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, "It’s really awesome. This Toyota Camry was really solid in practice. We elected to give up rolling out first (in practice) to get those adjustments we wanted to. Really, really good handling. Just proud of everyone’s effort here at 23XI. We’ve been solid. We had that stretch where we were really tough to beat here and we’ve worked hard to improve that. To have a Saturday go like this — just smooth with great handling is exactly what we want to see."
The qualifying session itself was a testament to the competitive nature of the Cup Series, with lead changes occurring throughout the various stages. The initial benchmark was set by Heim with a time of 29.664 seconds. Van Gisbergen then briefly held provisional pole before being surpassed by Byron. However, it was Christopher Bell who initially set a commanding pace in the first half of qualifying with a lap of 29.325 seconds.
As the session progressed into its latter stages, the intensity ramped up. Daniel Suarez momentarily seized the top spot before Chris Buescher edged him out by an infinitesimal 0.003 seconds with a 29.227-second lap. Carson Hocevar then improved upon that time, moving to the front with a 29.212-second effort. The Joe Gibbs Racing contingent, led by Hamlin and Briscoe, swiftly displaced Hocevar from the leading position. Kyle Larson made a strong bid for pole but lost valuable time in the final corner, ultimately settling for fourth. The dominance of Toyota was further emphasized as only another Camry-powered machine, driven by Reddick, could displace Hamlin from the provisional pole.
While the qualifying session was largely incident-free, Ty Dillon encountered difficulties on his flying lap, making contact with the wall. He is slated to start at the rear of the field.
Kansas Speedway, a track known for its challenging, wide racing surface and its ability to reward strategic execution, often produces compelling on-track battles. The speed shown by Toyota in qualifying suggests that the manufacturer will be a significant force in Sunday’s race. Reddick’s current championship lead is a testament to his consistent performance throughout the season, marked by strong finishes and strategic acumen. His partnership with 23XI Racing, co-owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, has rapidly ascended to the upper echelon of NASCAR competition.
Denny Hamlin, a seasoned veteran and a perennial championship contender, continues to demonstrate his prowess at the wheel of the No. 11 car. His presence at the front of the field is a familiar sight, and his ability to contend for victories at various track types remains a significant threat to his rivals. The synergy between Hamlin and Reddick, both within the 23XI Racing team and as competitors, adds an intriguing dynamic to the championship chase.
Ty Gibbs, in his continued development within the Cup Series, has shown flashes of brilliance, including his recent victory. His ability to qualify in the top three at Kansas indicates a strong package for his No. 54 machine and suggests he will be a factor in the race.
The Chevrolet contingent, led by Kyle Larson, faces the challenge of overcoming the Toyota advantage from the outset. Larson, a former Cup Series champion, is renowned for his aggressive driving style and his ability to adapt to varying track conditions. His ability to move forward from fourth place will be a key storyline to watch.
The aerodynamic configurations and engine performance are critical at Kansas Speedway, a track that demands a balance of raw speed and chassis tuning. The precise setup of each car, combined with the drivers’ ability to navigate the track’s complexities, will ultimately determine Sunday’s outcome.
The NASCAR Cup Series season is entering a crucial phase, with each race carrying significant weight in the championship standings. The strong qualifying performance at Kansas sets the stage for an exciting and competitive race, where strategies involving pit stops, tire management, and track position will play a pivotal role. As the green flag drops on Sunday, all eyes will be on Tyler Reddick and his pursuit of a dominant victory, while his rivals, including his teammate Denny Hamlin, will be eager to challenge for supremacy on the Kansas plains. The consistent performance of the Toyota camp suggests a formidable challenge for the rest of the field as they aim to capture the win.
