The test, held at the undulating Portimao circuit, followed directly on the heels of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend, where Norris narrowly missed victory at the new Madring circuit, his race strategy impacted by an untimely Virtual Safety Car deployment. Despite the immediate disappointment of the F1 race, Norris swiftly transitioned his focus to the demanding world of prototype endurance racing, crossing the border from Spain to Portugal for the crucial development outing.
During the session, Norris completed a total of 38 laps in the V6-powered MCL-HY, accumulating approximately 177 miles on the challenging 4.653-kilometer circuit. "It was great for them to give me a chance to have a bit of fun and try something new, particularly during their busy preparations for next year. Speaking on Monday, James Barclay, McLaren Hypercar team principal, acknowledged Norris’s contribution and left the door open for further engagements, albeit without explicitly referring to any race appearances. "We are all racers at McLaren Racing, and competing in Formula 1, INDYCAR and the World Endurance Championship creates exciting cross-series opportunities," Barclay commented, highlighting McLaren’s broader motorsport strategy. "Lando was keen to drive the MCL-HY beyond his Goodwood Hill run, so we invited him to join our private Portimao test. As we fully expected he adapted very quickly, integrated seamlessly and provided valuable feedback to support the car’s development."
