The team had failed to qualify for the NBA playoffs in eight of the preceding ten seasons, and a playoff series victory had eluded them since 2001, when Williams himself sealed a first-round triumph against the New York Knicks with a crucial jumper at Madison Square Garden. Toronto, despite its growing metropolitan appeal, was frequently perceived within the league as a transient destination for professional athletes. Williams, who maintained a deep connection to the city from his playing days, acknowledged this prevailing perception, noting that many players viewed the Raptors as a "pit stop" – a platform to elevate their individual game before pursuing opportunities with teams in the United States. "People thought they could use Canada and the Toronto Raptors as some way to elevate their game, so they can go somewhere else to play in the States," Williams, now an analyst for Sportsnet, stated. He further described Toronto as "a very shaky place for someone’s career at that time" before the franchise achieved greater stability in management, ownership, and coaching.
Kyle Lowry himself has acknowledged an initial shared perspective, viewing Toronto as a temporary stage in his career trajectory. However, the city and the Raptors organization ultimately proved to be the crucible for his transformative journey. It was in Toronto that Lowry evolved into a perennial NBA All-Star and, eventually, a championship-winning point guard. On Tuesday, at the team’s practice facility, Lowry formally concluded his 20-season NBA career by signing a one-day contract to retire as a Toronto Raptor. The franchise announced plans to retire his No. 7 jersey next season and to host a series of commemorative events in his honor in September, including a charity golf tournament, a block party, and a gala. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow officially proclaimed July 7, 2026, as "Kyle Lowry Day," solidifying his place in the city’s history.
The team and Mayor Chow have referred to Lowry as "the GROAT," an acronym for the Greatest Raptor of All Time. This designation reflects the profound impact he had on the franchise’s identity and competitive standing. Team president Bobby Webster articulated this shift, telling reporters at Tuesday’s news conference, "In many ways, I think of the franchise before Kyle and sort of after Kyle’s arrival." Prior to Lowry’s tenure, dating back to their inaugural season in 1995, the Raptors had never achieved a 50-win season and had secured only a single playoff series victory. With Lowry as a cornerstone, the team experienced five consecutive 50-win seasons, amassed nine playoff series victories, and, most notably, captured an NBA championship in 2019.

However, a subsequent encounter at the Villanova gym, where Lowry was observed shooting alone on a torn ACL and committed to rigorous 5 a.m. workouts with Jameer Nelson, revealed a "young man on a mission," transforming Williams’ perception.
Throughout his professional career, Lowry maintained a brash and fiery on-court demeanor, which persisted even during his later stints with the Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers. Off the court, Williams noted Lowry’s improvement in attitude and his increased dedication to health and nutrition. His transformation also included embracing a mentorship role, with Williams observing, "I do more listening to Kyle than I do speaking with him ’cause he’s so mature, he’s so well versed in so many different things. He helps me out as the little brother now more than I probably helped him out as the big brother back then."
Lowry’s evolution as a player was equally remarkable. After his fourth NBA season, he held a career 3-point shooting percentage of 26.3%, a figure that was increasingly unsustainable for a point guard in the evolving league, particularly under Daryl Morey’s Houston Rockets. The following season, Lowry drastically improved his 3-point volume and efficiency, reaching 37.6%. He continued to refine this skill in Toronto, becoming one of the league’s premier pull-up threats. Combining his improved long-range shooting with elite playmaking, tenacious on- and off-ball defense, and an unwavering commitment to exploiting every competitive advantage, Lowry became an analytics darling and a bona fide star. Williams lauded his "off the charts" basketball IQ, highlighting his meticulous study of opposing teams and players, his ability to direct teammates, and his willingness to take charges even in the All-Star Game – a charge against Kawhi Leonard in 2020 being his personal favorite.
Williams summarized Lowry’s impact: "He’s just going to bring winning to your team… He may not be the flashiest, but you have your Kyrie Irvings and your Steph Currys, and these guys that are just driving you insane with their talent and everything they can do — I’m taking Kyle Lowry all day because he’s playing on both sides of the floor and he’s the type of guy that’s going to make those type of guys work." Lowry, standing at 6 feet tall and lacking elite athleticism, forged a distinctive path as a difference-maker. Even as an All-NBA performer, he embraced the "dirty work." His disregard for conventional style effectively became a unique style in itself, cementing his Hall of Fame résumé as a testament to relentless effort and strategic guile.
"His handle and everything is basic," Williams observed. "He’s going to get the job done… He’s doubling down on his style, he’s doubling down on how he plays the game, and you have to appreciate that. That comes from where he’s from, North Philadelphia. It’s a gritty, it’s a grimy area, it’s tough-nosed basketball." This inherent grit, as Williams conveyed to Lowry in 2012, is precisely the quality that resonates deeply with the Toronto fanbase. Williams emphasized that Lowry exudes heart, a trait universally valued in the city, alongside the ultimate achievement of a championship. The symbolism of Kawhi Leonard’s attendance at Lowry’s retirement press conference on Tuesday was unmistakable: Toronto, once perceived as a team from which stars departed, has unequivocally become a destination to which they return, largely due to the indelible legacy forged by Kyle Lowry.
