Kyle Busch Reiterates Full Commitment to Richard Childress Racing Amidst Crew Chief Reshuffle

TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY, Fort Worth, TX – Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch has publicly reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to Richard Childress Racing (RCR) following a significant crew chief change for his No. 8 Chevrolet. The announcement, made in the wake of a second-place finish in the NASCAR Truck Series race at Texas Motor Speedway, signals a strategic recalibration for Busch and the RCR organization as they navigate the current Cup Series season.

Busch addressed the personnel shift, which sees Andy Street take over as crew chief for the No. 8 team, replacing Jim Pohlman. Busch expressed gratitude for Pohlman’s contributions during the initial ten races of the season but acknowledged that senior RCR leadership, including Richard Childress and Mike Verlander, ultimately deemed the change necessary to improve performance.

"I mean, I liked Jim (and) I liked his leadership and I liked his fire and his passion and all that sort of stuff," Busch stated. "So, was he in the right position? Obviously, Richard (Childress) and Mike (Verlander) and the guys in charge didn’t really feel that way."

The decision to bring in Andy Street, who previously worked with Busch during a partial season in 2023, is a calculated move aimed at leveraging a known working relationship. During their prior collaboration, Busch achieved respectable results, including an eighth-place finish at Las Vegas, a thirteenth at Martinsville, and a fifth at Phoenix. These performances stand in contrast to the No. 8 team’s current standing.

As of the Texas weekend, Busch finds himself 27th in the NASCAR Cup Series driver standings. The team’s sole top-10 finish of the season thus far came at Talladega Superspeedway, a track known for its unique racing dynamics and often unpredictable outcomes.

"So, obviously, I think the writing is in the point standings, right?" Busch commented on the team’s performance trajectory. "Like, we’re not where we need to be so there has to be a change somewhere. From my understanding, I feel like the conversation with Jim was well-received and he was fine with it."

The strategic alignment with Street is also viewed as a potential catalyst for improved on-track results. "We had some decent races with Andy Street (last year)," Busch added, "so do we come to Texas and run top-10 right here, right now? I’m not sure about that but we certainly have done our due diligence this week in trying to get prepared as we best know how."

The sentiment of renewed dedication was echoed by teammate Austin Dillon, who spoke earlier in the day. Dillon reported that Busch addressed the entire RCR shop in a meeting, conveying a strong sense of commitment.

"He’s all-in and wants to get back," Dillon said. "I talk to Kyle and his next win is going to be the biggest of his career, if you think about it the right way. All the stuff that has been said and brought up over the past year. I feel like if he puts his head down and takes that team back to victory lane… that’s going to be the biggest win of his career. That’s what we’re all fighting for and as a competitor, that’s what I would like to see."

Busch himself elaborated on his "all-in" declaration, emphasizing his deep-seated commitment to the RCR program. "I thanked Jim for his leadership and for him being there and being a part of our team and what he did at the time, and that I am fully-in and committed," Busch asserted. He further highlighted the intensity of his current work ethic. "I’ve never probably worked as much in these last four years as I did in 15 at (Joe Gibbs Racing) but that’s due to us needing to get better and getting things headed in the right direction."

The driver stressed the imperative for the team to regain momentum and establish a clear path forward. "We have to put the train back on the tracks and have a direction of what we need to do in order to be able to go forward. I feel like (Dillon) has done that lately. Those guys are clicking on all cylinders and making things look good for them and we have to be able to do the same — carry our weight and help improve the program."

Busch concluded his remarks on the shop meeting by reiterating the collective effort required. "So I was just reiterating all of that and giving everyone the vote of confidence that we’re all in this together and digging in."

The crew chief changes have inevitably fueled speculation, particularly given that Busch is a free agent at the conclusion of the current season. The sequence of crew chief switches – from Randall Burnett to Jim Pohlman and now to Andy Street – has been interpreted by some as a strategic effort by RCR to retain the two-time champion. However, Busch firmly rejected this notion.

"I wouldn’t agree with that," he stated. "I mean, I feel like we are in this together and I love Richard and feel like we have worked really well together. Austin is a phenomenal teammate that I have been able to work with. He is one of the best that I’ve had and it’s been a joy working with him. It’s just the results aren’t there and we have to line up and try to be better in order to get those."

The partnership with Street is expected to bring a renewed focus on fundamental race car engineering and driver feedback. Busch elaborated on his working dynamic with his new crew chief. "Andy and I conversate a lot," he said. "We did a lot last year and I think he has, I don’t know how to say this, a simpler mentality about how he goes about looking at things and it has to make sense for him to believe in it."

He further characterized Street’s approach as a return to core principles. "He just doesn’t believe in what the computer tells him. I feel like this is going back to basics and being a little more methodical about race cars." This philosophical alignment is anticipated to foster a more intuitive and responsive approach to car setup and race strategy, potentially bridging the performance gap that has characterized the No. 8 team’s season thus far. The coming races will be critical in evaluating the effectiveness of this latest strategic adjustment at Richard Childress Racing.
