In a significant move that underscores a long-term vision for competitiveness, 23XI Racing has officially announced that emerging talent Corey Heim will join the NASCAR Cup Series ranks on a full-time basis beginning with the 2027 season. This strategic decision, solidified through extensive discussions and revealed partly due to legal discovery in a recent lawsuit, signals the team’s unwavering commitment to building a championship-contending foundation with homegrown talent.
The revelation of 23XI Racing’s proactive pursuit of Heim came to light during the discovery process for the antitrust lawsuit filed by 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports against NASCAR. Documentation revealed an exchange between team co-owner Denny Hamlin and basketball icon Michael Jordan, where Hamlin emphasized the urgency of securing Heim’s commitment. Hamlin reportedly communicated to Jordan that Heim was a "foundational piece" they needed to sign before competitors could. Jordan’s swift response, "lock him up," paved the way for the multi-year agreement that will see Heim transition to the Cup Series.
Heim is slated to pilot what is currently the No. 35 entry. This seat will become available as incumbent driver Riley Herbst is heavily rumored to be heading to a newly expanded ride at Legacy Motor Club. Heim’s addition to the 23XI Racing roster places him alongside established talents such as Tyler Reddick, currently leading the championship standings, and Bubba Wallace, the reigning Brickyard 400 winner. This trio represents a potent combination of proven performance and future potential, aligning with Hamlin’s strategy of identifying and cultivating key assets.
The decision to invest in Heim reflects a deliberate approach by Hamlin and Jordan, who are known for their astute identification of racing talent. Hamlin articulated his belief in Heim’s generational potential during a press conference at Nashville Superspeedway. "For our company, generational drivers only come by every now and then," Hamlin stated. "And I firmly believe that we have one here." This conviction, Hamlin elaborated, has been present since 2023, stemming from Heim’s exceptional race craft.

"It was just his race craft in general," Hamlin explained. "It wasn’t speed or finishes, anything like that, but very similar to Tyler (Reddick) in that when his vehicle is in a certain position, a vulnerable position, he still finds a way to get out of it and make a move whoever he is trying to pass. I know moves that are difficult to make and the great ones find ways to make them and make it look easy when I know it’s not." This analytical perspective highlights Hamlin’s deep understanding of driving talent and his ability to recognize the nuanced skills that separate elite drivers.
The path to a full-time Cup Series ride for Heim was not immediate, requiring a strategic build-up of resources and opportunities. When Hamlin initially identified Heim as a priority, 23XI Racing was operating with its allocated two charters for Wallace and Reddick. The acquisition of a third charter was a crucial step, made possible by the funding secured through Riley Herbst’s involvement. This expansion allowed 23XI Racing to strategically integrate Heim into their program, providing him with a robust schedule that complemented his full-time duties in the NASCAR Truck Series with Tricon Garage. This phased approach was designed to provide Heim with invaluable experience and familiarity with Cup Series competition, positioning him for a seamless transition when a full-time opportunity materialized.
This deliberate development also required patience from Heim himself. Reflecting on the process, Heim emphasized the importance of trust and alignment within his racing environment. "I’ve always gone with my gut," Heim said. "I’ve always tried to prioritize surrounding myself with good people. That’s important in this sport — people that believe in you and people that want you to succeed as well as themselves." This sentiment underscores the collaborative nature of top-tier motorsports and the significance of a supportive team structure.
Throughout his development, Heim has remained loyal to the Toyota camp, a decision he attributes to the manufacturer’s consistent support for his career progression. "When I signed with 23XI Racing, it was the same feeling," he added. "I was preparing for my first race here, at Nashville, two years ago and I felt like they wanted me to succeed and put me in the position to do so. For me, it just made no sense to go anywhere else. Between Toyota and 23XI Racing, I feel at home and everyone wants everyone to succeed. Everyone is lifting each other up. Even on the bad days, you take that on the chin and move on so I do feel like I’m in a good spot for sure." This loyalty speaks to the strong relationships forged within the Toyota pipeline, which has consistently produced competitive talent.
Hamlin acknowledged and appreciated Heim’s patience and maturity throughout this developmental phase. "He was extremely, extremely patient," Hamlin remarked. "Which, in my mind, shows the maturity he has. It’s well beyond his age. I think he shows it on the race track and obviously off the race track, making the decision that he was going to go with us long-term, even if he had to wait a little bit. We certainly appreciate that, and it’s similar to what I saw in Tyler Reddick, and with both guys figure out whatever it took to make it work." This comparison to Reddick, a proven Cup Series winner, further validates Hamlin’s high expectations for Heim.
The specific car number for Heim’s Cup Series debut was a topic of discussion. While the press release indicated the No. 35, Hamlin suggested this could be subject to change. He confirmed that various numbers were discussed, including the No. 25, a number currently held by Hendrick Motorsports. Heim expressed his preference for long-term numerical identity, a crucial aspect of building a personal brand in NASCAR. "There’s a handful of numbers I had when I was younger that I liked," Heim shared. "I’ve always liked 11 but that’s pretty locked up too but we did bounce some ideas back and forth." He also acknowledged that his teammate Tyler Reddick has expressed interest in the No. 11 once Hamlin retires, though that prospect remains uncertain. Ultimately, Heim emphasized his desire for a consistent number that would become synonymous with his identity, stating, "I want to keep that number for a long time, and I want it to count. So that was more of a brainstorming exercise, not anything I felt strongly about one way or the other, but just having some ideas."
Heim’s ascent through the NASCAR ranks has been marked by consistent success. In 2023, he secured the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series regular season championship and finished runner-up in the championship standings. He has also demonstrated his versatility and talent in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, securing multiple victories. His statistical achievements and strong performances across different series have solidified his reputation as one of the most promising young drivers in stock car racing. The anticipation for his full-time Cup Series debut in 2027 is palpable, as 23XI Racing aims to leverage his potential to challenge for race wins and championships in the coming years.
