Carson Hocevar, a burgeoning talent in the NASCAR Cup Series, finds himself at a unique crossroads in his career, experiencing a surge in mainstream recognition that even he admits to not fully comprehending. At just 23 years old, Hocevar has transcended the confines of the racing circuit, becoming a recognizable figure to audiences far beyond the dedicated NASCAR fanbase. This unexpected trajectory, marked by invitations to prestigious events like the Met Gala and the Time 100 Sports Gala, stands in stark contrast to his early racing days.
A decade ago, Hocevar’s precocious talent led to his expulsion from a local short track for being underage to compete in Late Model races, events he was already dominating. Now, he’s sharing tables with global icons such as LeBron James and Prince Harry, a testament to a rapid rise that has captured broader public attention. Despite having secured only one Cup Series victory to date, Hocevar’s presence at these high-profile gatherings underscores a growing influence that extends beyond his on-track performance. Adding to his public profile, he is also known to be dating prominent content creator Tabitha Swatosh.
Reflecting on this surreal experience during a press conference at North Wilkesboro Speedway on Friday, Hocevar expressed a blend of gratitude and bewilderment. "Yeah, it’s great for me," he stated. "You know, like I say all the time, my favorite driver was Dale (Earnhardt) Jr. I saw him everywhere, right? You saw him on MTV, the music awards and doing all these really cool things, so I just always thought that’s really what NASCAR drivers do. In the 2000s, it was probably a lot more realistic that they all do it."
Hocevar candidly admitted his occasional confusion regarding his inclusion in such high-caliber events. "There’s a lot of times where I’m like, I don’t understand why I’m invited to these, but I’m definitely taking advantage of it, enjoying it, embracing it and just trying to have as much fun with it as possible, knowing that obviously it’s a really cool and once-in-a-life experience for me at a lot of these events. But also, too, it’s obviously great for the sport."

His encounter with NBA superstar LeBron James at one such event provided a memorable anecdote. Initially hesitant to approach James, Hocevar was eventually drawn into a conversation. "I walked over and he was at his table," Hocevar recounted. "I sat at a table far away from him and some guy came up to ask for a seat. He happened to know who I was and I knew him. He was like, ‘hey, I’m taking this seat over to LeBron, why don’t you walk over?’" The situation escalated as James’s security detail initially became more alert, but a gesture from James himself diffused the tension. "And so, I walked over and you could tell his security guards just started to swarm in, and then all of a sudden, the guy put his hand up and that’s when LeBron stood up, took his glasses off and then we talked for a while. And then I was like, ‘man, I have to get a photo.’ It was cool."
The interaction with James was facilitated by the fact that the basketball icon was already aware of Hocevar, due to the trainer’s son currently competing in North Carolina racing circuits.
The encounter with Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, was also a notable moment. Hocevar admitted a personal motivation for seeking a photograph with royalty. "I think I was like, ‘man, I wouldn’t make my mom proud if I didn’t ask for a photo.’ That’s who she loves." Prince Harry reportedly obliged, expressing his hope that the photograph brought his mother joy.
Hocevar acknowledges the inherent pressure to translate this increased visibility into tangible on-track success. As a 23-year-old competitor, he feels a responsibility to both capitalize on the opportunities presented and to honor the support from Spire Motorsports, his sponsors, and NASCAR itself. "It’s been super cool for me," he reiterated. "I think Denny (Hamlin) and Michael (Jordan) were in (the TIME Sports 100) as well. But, you know, being the solo (NASCAR driver) in it, I guess, is super fun for me."
He also offered a perspective on the nature of popularity within motorsports. "Obviously, I want to win more, but I think it’s been proven a lot within the sport that you can win multiple races in a row and that doesn’t make your (name) outside the NASCAR bubble, right? If our viewership was based off the racing production, we’d have 10 million live viewers for Atlanta every single time, I think."
Hocevar’s insight points to a broader challenge within NASCAR: cultivating a connection between fans and drivers that transcends the immediate race action. "Ultimately, it’s just getting people to care who’s in the cars," he concluded. "You can have the greatest finish of all time, but if you don’t care who’s involved in the finish, you might as well go watch iRacing, AI Racing, an animation, any kind of motorsport. It’s been super humbling for me to have a lot of people ultimately care about who’s in my car." This sentiment suggests that while his current mainstream appeal may be somewhat of an enigma to him, Hocevar understands that sustained success, both on and off the track, will depend on forging deeper connections with a wider audience by making them invest in his journey as a driver.
