Brock Lesnar, a towering figure across professional wrestling and mixed martial arts, concluded his illustrious career on Sunday night, April X, at WrestleMania 42. The 48-year-old laid down his gloves and boots following a decisive loss to Oba Femi, marking a poignant end to a career that spanned over two decades and left an indelible mark on combat sports.
The match, which opened the second night of WWE’s premier annual event, saw Lesnar defeated by the rising star Femi. Speculation regarding Lesnar’s potential retirement had intensified in the weeks leading up to WrestleMania, and the post-match sequence confirmed these predictions. Following the contest, an visibly emotional Lesnar removed his signature gloves and wrestling boots, placing them deliberately in the center of the ring. He was then embraced by his longtime friend and on-screen advocate, Paul Heyman, in a moment that resonated deeply with the live audience and viewers worldwide. The gesture of leaving boots in the ring is a time-honored tradition, particularly among amateur and collegiate wrestlers, signifying the end of a competitive journey.
As Lesnar made his way from the ring for what is expected to be the final time in his professional wrestling career, the crowd erupted in a thunderous chant of “Thank you, Lesnar,” a testament to his impact and the respect he commanded. Among those witnessing the historic moment ringside was former UFC Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier, a contemporary and occasional rival from Lesnar’s mixed martial arts days.
Lesnar’s journey to the pinnacle of sports entertainment began long before his WWE debut, rooted in an exceptional amateur wrestling career. A standout at the University of Minnesota, Lesnar dominated the collegiate wrestling scene, culminating in winning the NCAA Division I Heavyweight Championship in 2000. His amateur pedigree, characterized by immense strength and athleticism, served as the foundation for his professional aspirations.

Upon graduating, Lesnar was swiftly signed by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2000. He spent a brief period honing his craft in regional developmental promotions before making his main roster debut in March 2002. Immediately dubbed "The Next Big Thing" by Heyman, Lesnar’s ascent was meteoric. Within five months, he captured the King of the Ring tournament, and by August 2002, he defeated The Rock at SummerSlam to become the Undisputed WWE Champion, a feat that made him the youngest champion in the company’s history at 25 years old. His initial run was characterized by a series of high-profile feuds against legends such as The Undertaker, Kurt Angle, and Eddie Guerrero. However, by 2004, citing burnout and mounting injuries, Lesnar departed WWE after a main event match against Goldberg at WrestleMania XX.
Following his initial departure from WWE, Lesnar pursued an unlikely dream in professional football. He signed with the Minnesota Vikings and participated in their 2004 preseason, showcasing his raw athleticism. Despite making the final cuts, his NFL aspirations did not materialize, leading him to pivot towards mixed martial arts.
Lesnar’s foray into MMA began with a single fight under the K-1 banner in 2007, where he secured a quick first-round victory over Min-Soo Kim. However, his ultimate goal was to compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), a path that initially proved challenging. Lesnar revealed in a recent interview the significant hurdles he faced in gaining the attention of UFC CEO Dana White.
“Dana White wanted nothing to do with me,” Lesnar stated. “He wouldn’t return my phone calls. What happened was I fought at the L.A. Coliseum for K-1 Dynamite and then I wanted to get into the big leagues and there’s only one big league at the time and it was the UFC. My team reached out and wanted to do something with the UFC. This is the stuff you have to do. I said screw it, I bought four nosebleed tickets to the MGM [Grand Garden Arena], Randy Couture was headlining against Gabriel Gonzaga for the heavyweight championship.”
Lesnar recounted his determined effort to personally secure a meeting with White. “I sat there in the stands through the entire event and as soon as Randy won that fight, I scaled the security and ran to the octagon, I grabbed Dana and I introduced myself – ‘I’m Brock Lesnar.’ We went to the back and he said ‘well listen, I’ll give you a shot.’ He gave me a one-fight deal. I said take a gamble on me.”
White’s gamble paid off, despite Lesnar’s debut loss to Frank Mir at UFC 81 in February 2008. The sheer drawing power and audience interest generated by Lesnar’s presence convinced the UFC to sign him to a multi-fight deal. His progression in the octagon was remarkably swift. Just nine months after his debut, Lesnar challenged and defeated Randy Couture at UFC 91 in November 2008 to become the UFC Heavyweight Champion, a title he successfully defended against Frank Mir in a rematch at UFC 100 and Shane Carwin at UFC 116. His reign established him as a major pay-per-view draw, significantly boosting the UFC’s mainstream appeal.
Lesnar’s MMA career was also marked by a severe battle with diverticulitis, a debilitating intestinal condition that required multiple surgeries and led to extended periods of inactivity. He eventually lost the heavyweight title to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 in October 2010 and subsequently retired from MMA after a loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141 in December 2011. He made a brief return for a highly anticipated bout at UFC 200 in July 2016 against Mark Hunt, which was initially a victory but later overturned to a no-contest due to a drug test failure.
In 2012, Lesnar made a highly anticipated return to WWE, reigniting his career as a part-time, special attraction performer. This second run solidified his status as "The Beast Incarnate," a dominant and formidable force. Key moments included breaking The Undertaker’s legendary undefeated streak at WrestleMania XXX in 2014, a moment that sent shockwaves through the industry. He went on to capture the WWE Championship multiple times, notably defeating John Cena at SummerSlam 2014 in a dominant performance, and also held the WWE Universal Championship on several occasions. His later years in WWE saw him engaged in high-profile rivalries with top stars such as Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Goldberg, and Cody Rhodes, consistently delivering major main event spectacles.
Throughout his career, Lesnar demonstrated unparalleled athleticism and an ability to transition seamlessly between highly demanding disciplines. His unique combination of amateur wrestling prowess, NFL experience, UFC championship success, and multiple WWE world titles positions him as one of the most versatile and impactful combat sports athletes of all time. His ability to command massive audiences across different platforms underscores his rare star power.
With his latest retirement from professional wrestling, Lesnar appears to be closing the final chapter on his competitive career. He had previously reaffirmed his decision to stay retired from fighting in 2018, despite briefly teasing a return to the UFC. The emotional scenes at WrestleMania 42 signify the definitive end of an era for a generational talent who transcended traditional boundaries and captivated millions worldwide. Lesnar’s legacy as a true crossover superstar, "The Beast Incarnate," will undoubtedly endure as a benchmark for athletic achievement and entertainment spectacle.
