Hendrick Motorsports announced Tuesday that Alex Bowman has been medically cleared to return to the driver’s seat of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet for the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Bowman has been sidelined for the past month while managing symptoms of vertigo, a condition that significantly impacted his ability to compete.
The 32-year-old driver’s struggle with vertigo became public during the Cup Series event at Circuit of the Americas (COTA), where he was forced to exit his car mid-race. Myatt Snider stepped in to complete the race at COTA. Following this, Anthony Alfredo temporarily filled the No. 48 seat at Phoenix Raceway, while veteran driver Justin Allgaier has been at the helm for the subsequent races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Darlington Raceway, and Martinsville Speedway.
Bowman expressed his gratitude for the extensive support system that has aided his recovery. "I’m grateful for the support I’ve had from Hendrick Motorsports, my sponsor Ally, our fans and the medical team throughout this process," Bowman stated in a press release issued by the team. "It’s been tough being out of the car, but we all wanted to make sure I was 100% ready before returning. I feel really good, and I’m excited about being at the track with my team and getting back to racing."
To ensure his full readiness, Hendrick Motorsports implemented a comprehensive return-to-track protocol for Bowman. Earlier this week, he participated in several key assessments. This included running laps in a street car on the road course at the Hendrick-owned Ten Tenths Motor Club, a facility known for its challenging layout. This was followed by extensive time in the simulator, allowing him to reacclimate to the demands of a race car in a controlled environment. Furthermore, Bowman engaged in pit stop practice, a crucial element of NASCAR racing that requires precise coordination and physical exertion. The rigorous testing culminated in a full medical evaluation, where specialists provided the final clearance for his return.

Jeff Andrews, president and general manager of Hendrick Motorsports, conveyed the team’s pride in Bowman’s approach to his recovery. "We’re proud of Alex and the way he’s handled this situation," Andrews commented. "He’s put a lot of work into his recovery and followed the medical team’s plan every step of the way. From the outset, our goal was to prioritize his health and have him return when he was fully recovered and medically cleared. We’re looking forward to seeing Alex back in his race car this weekend."
The absence of Bowman has significantly impacted his standing in the NASCAR Cup Series championship. Currently, he sits in 36th place in the driver standings with 23 points. He faces a considerable deficit, being 144 points adrift of the current playoff cutline. This presents a substantial challenge for Bowman to accrue enough points over the remaining 19 races of the regular season to qualify for the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. His return to racing at Bristol marks the beginning of his effort to overcome this points deficit and contend for a playoff spot.
The Bristol Motor Speedway, often referred to as the "Last Great Colosseum," is renowned for its physically demanding half-mile concrete oval. Its steep banking and close-quarters racing test the endurance and skill of drivers, making Bowman’s physical clearance all the more significant. The track’s unique configuration often leads to intense battles and unpredictable outcomes, a stage where Bowman will aim to make an immediate impact upon his return.
Hendrick Motorsports, one of the most decorated organizations in NASCAR history, will be looking to regain its full strength with Bowman back in the No. 48 car. The team has a rich history of success at Bristol, and Bowman himself has shown strong performances on this track in the past. His return adds another competitive element to the No. 48 team’s season, as they aim to improve their position in the championship standings.
The implications of Bowman’s return extend beyond his personal performance. The No. 48 team, historically a championship contender, relies on its full driver lineup to accumulate manufacturer and owner points. With Bowman back, the team can now focus on optimizing both driver and team performance throughout the remainder of the season. His experience and race-craft will be invaluable as Hendrick Motorsports navigates the competitive landscape of the NASCAR Cup Series.
The road ahead for Alex Bowman is undoubtedly challenging from a points perspective. However, his medical clearance signifies a personal victory and allows him to focus on his on-track performance. The NASCAR community will be closely watching his return at Bristol, eager to see how he fares after his recovery. His ability to regain race form quickly will be a key factor in determining the No. 48 team’s championship aspirations. The demanding nature of the Bristol track will serve as an immediate test of his renewed physical and mental fortitude. His successful navigation of this challenging circuit could serve as a significant morale boost for both himself and the entire Hendrick Motorsports organization.
