Hendrick Motorsports announced Tuesday that Alex Bowman has been medically cleared to return to the driver’s seat of the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet for the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Bowman has been sidelined for the past month while managing symptoms of vertigo, a condition that significantly impacted his ability to compete.
The 32-year-old driver’s struggle with vertigo became public during the Cup Series event at Circuit of the Americas (COTA), where he was forced to exit his car mid-race. Myatt Snider stepped in to complete the race at COTA. Following this, Anthony Alfredo temporarily filled the No. 48 seat at Phoenix Raceway, while veteran driver Justin Allgaier has been at the helm for the subsequent races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Darlington Raceway, and Martinsville Speedway.
Bowman expressed his gratitude for the extensive support system that has aided his recovery. "I’m grateful for the support I’ve had from Hendrick Motorsports, my sponsor Ally, our fans and the medical team throughout this process," Bowman stated in a press release issued by the team. "It’s been tough being out of the car, but we all wanted to make sure I was 100% ready before returning. I feel really good, and I’m excited about being at the track with my team and getting back to racing."
To ensure his full readiness, Hendrick Motorsports implemented a comprehensive return-to-track protocol for Bowman. Earlier this week, he participated in several key assessments. This included running laps in a street car on the road course at the Hendrick-owned Ten Tenths Motor Club, a facility known for its challenging layout. This was followed by extensive time in the simulator, allowing him to reacclimate to the demands of a race car in a controlled environment. Furthermore, Bowman engaged in pit stop practice, a crucial element of NASCAR racing that requires precise coordination and physical exertion. The rigorous testing culminated in a full medical evaluation, where specialists provided the final clearance for his return.
