Kansas Speedway, Kansas – Ryan Blaney, the reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion, has clarified his position regarding the recent personnel changes within his No. 12 Team Penske pit crew, stating his primary responsibility is to foster a cohesive and welcoming environment for all team members, rather than participating in selection decisions. This statement comes in the wake of a significant alteration to his pit crew lineup, which saw jack man Landon Honeycutt reassigned to the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing entry, driven by Josh Berry.
The adjustments to Blaney’s pit crew stem from a challenging start to the 2024 season, where the No. 12 team has reportedly lost over 100 track positions due to issues on pit road. These struggles have been attributed, in part, to a combination of choreography inefficiencies and the development curve of a young jack man. Prior to the Kansas Speedway weekend, Team Penske had initially planned to promote Patrick Gray to the jack man position on Blaney’s team. However, a further strategic shift resulted in the return of veteran Graham Stoddard, a familiar face within the Team Penske organization, to the No. 12 pit stall. Stoddard brings with him a wealth of experience from previous seasons with the organization.
Blaney, who has consistently voiced his support for Honeycutt’s growth throughout the season, reiterated that he does not involve himself in the executive-level decisions concerning pit crew composition. "It’s not my role, right?" Blaney commented during a media availability session at Kansas Speedway on Saturday. "Jonathan (Hassler, crew chief) and I talk, we talk to upper management, Travis (Geisler, competition director) and guys like that to figure out how we can all be better, collectively and as a group."
He elaborated on his defined responsibilities, stating, "My role, really, whoever is with us, is to make them feel part of the team, no matter who it is, you’re one of the 12 guys. That’s my main role. It’s not decision making and things of those regards. So all I can do is sit in on the meetings and see what they think and wherever it ends up, is welcome whoever joins the group and make them feel like part of the boys, that’s where my role ends."

The integration of Stoddard into the No. 12 pit crew is expected to be a smoother transition for Blaney, given their established relationship. Blaney considers Stoddard a friend and acknowledges his extensive tenure as an over-the-wall athlete within Team Penske. "Yeah, I’ve worked with Graham for a long time," Blaney stated. "He and I were on a team together for a while and he’s kind of bounced around our organization. He’s a great person. It was a lot of fun to work with him for a while and with him still in the building, get to see him on a day-to-day basis is fun, and I consider him a friend of mine. He’s a friend of mine and a championship caliber guy so we’re excited to have Graham with us and excited to see what he brings."
Team Penske, a powerhouse in motorsports, is renowned for its meticulous approach to optimizing every aspect of race car performance, with pit crew execution being a critical component. The organization’s commitment to continuous improvement often necessitates strategic personnel evaluations and adjustments, particularly when performance metrics indicate room for enhancement. The No. 12 team’s current season statistics, which have seen significant on-track time lost during pit stops, underscore the urgency for these operational refinements.
In the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season, Blaney, driving the No. 12 Ford Mustang, secured his first championship title after a dramatic playoff run. His victory at Phoenix Raceway capped a season that saw him achieve one win (at Martinsville Speedway), 11 top-five finishes, and 21 top-10 finishes. The performance of his pit crew is intrinsically linked to his ability to contend for victories week in and week out, as seconds gained or lost on pit road can often be the decisive factor in close-fought races.
The addition of Stoddard, a seasoned professional, is anticipated to bring a stabilizing presence and enhanced efficiency to the No. 12 pit crew. His prior experience within the Team Penske ecosystem means he is well-versed in the organization’s operational standards and expectations. This familiarity can accelerate his integration and immediate impact.
The strategic reassignment of Honeycutt to the No. 21 car also signifies Team Penske’s broader approach to talent development and resource allocation across its NASCAR operations. By placing Honeycutt in a different competitive environment, the organization likely aims to provide him with new opportunities for growth and contribution, while simultaneously bolstering the No. 21 team’s pit stop capabilities. The Wood Brothers, a historic name in NASCAR, operate a satellite team in partnership with Team Penske, sharing resources and technical expertise.
The ongoing performance of the No. 12 pit crew will be closely monitored throughout the remainder of the season. Blaney’s stated focus on fostering team unity and his acceptance of the organizational decisions underscore a mature approach to the competitive demands of NASCAR. As the season progresses, the effectiveness of these pit crew adjustments will be a key factor in the No. 12 team’s pursuit of further success, including defending their championship title. The team’s ability to execute flawlessly on pit road will undoubtedly be a focal point as they navigate the remaining races on the 2024 schedule.
