NASCAR’s premier series descends upon the historic Darlington Raceway this weekend for the sixth event of the 2026 season, the Crown Royal 400. Known for its challenging layout and rich history, Darlington has been a staple on the Cup Series schedule since 1950, consistently delivering thrilling and unpredictable racing. As is tradition at "The Lady in Black," several teams are set to unveil special throwback liveries, paying homage to the sport’s storied past. Among the most anticipated tributes is Spire Motorsports’ #77 Chevrolet, which will feature a striking blue and yellow paint scheme, a direct nod to the legendary Dale Earnhardt.
The chosen livery is inspired by Earnhardt’s iconic Wrangler paint scheme, a combination that saw significant success throughout his illustrious career. Notably, 25 of Earnhardt’s 76 Cup Series victories were achieved with Wrangler as the primary sponsor. This specific tribute scheme draws direct inspiration from Earnhardt’s 1981 season, a period marked by his aggressive driving style and burgeoning superstar status. The connection between Hocevar and Earnhardt’s driving ethos has been a recurring topic of discussion among competitors and fans alike, with many drawing parallels between the young driver’s tenacious approach and the early career of "The Intimidator."
This year’s Darlington throwback weekend holds particular significance for Spire Motorsports and its driver, Carson Hocevar. Hocevar, who has garnered attention for his aggressive racing tactics, will be piloting the #77 machine adorned with Chili’s branding, but under the guise of the classic Wrangler colors. This choice is not merely cosmetic; it is a deliberate effort to celebrate Earnhardt’s enduring legacy within the sport.
The historical context of the Wrangler sponsorship is substantial. Dale Earnhardt’s partnership with Wrangler began in the late 1970s, and the iconic blue and yellow colors became synonymous with his brand of hard-nosed racing. During their tenure together, Earnhardt secured multiple championships and countless race wins, etching his name into NASCAR folklore. His success at Darlington Raceway was particularly notable, with four of his Cup Series victories coming at the South Carolina track (1982, 1984, and two in 1987). The chosen 1981 scheme represents a pivotal era in Earnhardt’s career, a time when he was solidifying his reputation as one of the sport’s most formidable competitors.

Carson Hocevar, still in pursuit of his maiden NASCAR Cup Series victory, is set to make his 87th career start this weekend. While a win has eluded him at the Cup level, Hocevar has demonstrated flashes of brilliance, securing two runner-up finishes in his Cup career. His best performance at Darlington Raceway to date is a ninth-place finish in last fall’s Southern 500, showcasing his potential on the demanding oval. The opportunity to honor a figure as monumental as Dale Earnhardt on a track as historic as Darlington presents a unique platform for Hocevar to potentially make a significant statement.
Adding another layer of authenticity to the tribute, Hocevar’s firesuit will also be a throwback. It has been meticulously designed to replicate the distinctive blue jean and suede vest ensemble that Dale Earnhardt himself famously wore in promotional images during the 1981 season. This commitment to detail underscores the depth of the homage being paid by Spire Motorsports and its partners.
Tim Forman, Director of Media for Chili’s, elaborated on the inspiration behind the "Marg Machine," as the tribute car has been dubbed. "Last year, we noticed the chatter comparing Carson’s driving style to a young Dale Earnhardt, and it’s only grown louder as big names in the sport make the comparison," Forman stated. "Given the discussion, we wanted to honor Dale’s legacy, using his 1981 paint scheme as the inspiration for what we’re calling the Marg Machine. Spire and Carson were all in, and we hope fans enjoy seeing the iconic blue and yellow on track again." The nickname "Marg Machine" playfully references Chili’s popular margarita offerings, blending the brand’s identity with the throwback theme.
Hocevar himself expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the collaborative effort involved. "Chili’s always knocks it out of the park with their suit and car designs, and the Marg Machine is no different," Hocevar commented. "Everyone at Chili’s and Spire put in a lot of work to get the car as close to the original as possible, and they did a great job. We’ve had bold suits in the past, but this might be one of my favorites. It’s truly a privilege to honor Dale’s legacy on Alumni Weekend down in Darlington, and hopefully we can give him and all the folks from Chili’s a great run on Sunday." His remarks emphasize the respect for Earnhardt’s legacy and the dedication to executing the tribute with precision.
This initiative by Spire Motorsports is not the first time the team has leveraged its #77 entry to pay tribute to Dale Earnhardt. In 2020, driver Ross Chastain piloted a Spire car that featured a paint scheme mirroring the red, white, and blue #77 Chevrolet that Earnhardt drove in his third career Cup Series start. That particular effort was sponsored by Dirty Mo Media, an entity owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr., further cementing the family’s connection to such homages. The recurring use of the #77 for Earnhardt tributes underscores a conscious effort by Spire Motorsports to connect with the sport’s heritage and its most revered figures.
The Crown Royal 400 at Darlington Raceway is scheduled to take place this Sunday, with live television coverage beginning at 3:00 PM ET on FOX. The race is expected to draw significant viewership, both for the competitive action on track and for the nostalgic tributes that have become a hallmark of Darlington’s race weekends. As Hocevar takes the wheel of the "Marg Machine," the NASCAR community will undoubtedly be watching closely, eager to see if he can channel the spirit of Dale Earnhardt and deliver a performance worthy of the iconic livery. The historical parallels, combined with Hocevar’s aggressive driving style, set the stage for a compelling narrative as the Cup Series navigates the treacherous turns of Darlington.
