Justin Marks, the visionary founder and team owner of the highly successful Trackhouse Racing organization, is set to strap back into a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series machine for the upcoming inaugural race at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego. Marks will pilot the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet, a venture supported by long-time partner Jockey, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary.
Since its inception in 2021, Trackhouse Racing has rapidly ascended to become a dominant force in the NASCAR Cup Series. The team boasts an impressive tally of 15 Cup Series victories, including a prestigious win in the 2025 Coca-Cola 600. Trackhouse currently fields a formidable lineup: the No. 1 Chevrolet driven by Ross Chastain, the No. 88 Chevrolet with Connor Zilisch behind the wheel, and the No. 97 Chevrolet piloted by Shane van Gisbergen.
However, before establishing himself as the owner of a championship-contending Cup Series team, Marks cultivated a notable career as a driver. His racing resume spans all three major NASCAR national touring series, and he secured a significant victory in a NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 2016.
This upcoming start will mark Marks’ 40th appearance in the Craftsman Truck Series. His most recent foray into the series was at Mid-Ohio during the 2022 season. While Marks has yet to achieve a victory in the Truck Series, he has demonstrated competitive speed, earning two pole positions and achieving a personal best finish of eighth. Beyond his stock car endeavors, Marks also achieved considerable success in sports car racing, accumulating eight wins in the Rolex Grand-Am Sports Car Series (now part of IMSA), highlighted by a class victory in the prestigious 2009 Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Reflecting on his return to competition, Marks expressed his enthusiasm for the unique opportunity. "It’s a unique opportunity to drive in the inaugural Truck Series race at San Diego Naval Base," Marks stated. "I’ll enjoy getting behind the wheel every once in a while, and I’m thankful to do it with Spire’s help and with a longtime partner like Jockey. They are celebrating their 150th anniversary and are very supportive of our military which makes the endeavor even more special. There is a lot of excitement surrounding the upcoming race weekend and it’s an honor to be a part of it."
The partnership with Spire Motorsports for this event underscores a long-standing relationship between Marks and the team’s leadership. Bill Anthony, President of Spire Motorsports, commented on the significance of Marks’ participation. "Our relationship with Justin goes back a long way, from his time coming up through the sport, so it means a great deal to have him in Spire Motorsports’ No. 77 Chevy Silverado for this race," Anthony said. "We know how important this event is for Justin and Jockey, and we’re proud to support that opportunity while recognizing the tremendous impact Justin continues to have as one of NASCAR’s best advocates and forward-thinking leaders."
The presence of team owners competing in the Truck Series race at San Diego is not limited to Marks. Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, who is a co-owner of Legacy Motor Club, is also slated to compete, driving an entry for TRICON Garage.
The San Diego Naval Base event represents a significant addition to the NASCAR calendar, offering a unique street-course challenge. The track, located within the operational confines of a military installation, promises an unconventional racing environment. Previous reports have highlighted the anticipated complexities of this venue, suggesting potential for heightened action, including close racing, contact, and the need for additional strategic considerations from spotters and track officials. The debut of this circuit is expected to test drivers and teams in novel ways, adding another layer of intrigue to the 2024 Craftsman Truck Series season.
Both Shane van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch, who are part of the Trackhouse Racing Cup Series program, have gained valuable experience in Spire Motorsports trucks earlier in the current season, providing them with a foundational understanding of the equipment and team dynamics that may indirectly benefit Marks. Van Gisbergen, a four-time Supercars champion, has shown rapid adaptation to NASCAR machinery, while Zilisch, a promising young talent, is steadily building his racing resume across various disciplines.
The inclusion of Marks in the driver’s seat not only adds star power to the event but also provides a unique perspective on the competitive landscape of the Truck Series from an owner who is deeply invested in the success of his own teams. His participation offers a rare opportunity for fans and competitors alike to witness a prominent team owner engage directly with the racing action at a foundational level of the sport. The historical context of Marks’ own driving career, coupled with his current role as a transformative team owner, makes his presence at San Diego a noteworthy storyline.
The sponsorship from Jockey, a brand with a rich heritage, further elevates the significance of this particular race. The company’s commitment to supporting military communities aligns with the unique venue of Naval Base Coronado, adding a patriotic and commemorative dimension to the event. Jockey’s 150th anniversary adds a milestone celebration to the race weekend, underscoring a long-standing commitment to quality and partnership across various endeavors.
As the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series prepares for its inaugural visit to San Diego, the entry list is shaping up to feature a compelling mix of established stars, rising talents, and respected figures from within the NASCAR community. Justin Marks’ decision to compete adds a significant narrative thread to this historic event, bridging his current role as a team architect with his past as a competitor. The race is poised to be a memorable occasion, offering a blend of competitive racing and unique strategic challenges against the backdrop of a distinctive Southern California venue. The anticipation for this event is palpable, with the return of a prominent owner to the driver’s seat generating considerable interest among racing enthusiasts.
