Denny Hamlin Dominates Pocono Qualifying, Secures Pole Amidst Wallace and Hocevar Incidents

Pocono Raceway, PA – Denny Hamlin, piloting the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, once again demonstrated his prowess at Pocono Raceway, capturing the pole position for the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series race. Hamlin set the blistering pace in qualifying, being the sole competitor to break the 52-second barrier with a remarkable lap of 51.948 seconds. This marks Hamlin’s 51st career pole in the Cup Series and his sixth at the Pennsylvania triangle, solidifying his status as a perennial contender on this challenging track.

Joining Hamlin on the front row will be Kyle Larson, the driver of the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Larson came agonizingly close to snatching the pole, finishing just 0.055 seconds behind Hamlin’s best effort. The proximity of their times suggests a fierce battle is brewing for Sunday’s event.

"Because of the sun, the track heated up so much from the middle of the session to the end," Hamlin commented following his qualifying run. "We just didn’t have the clouds, but certainly had the grip. This whole team did a great job with adjustments, making it a little better from practice. I didn’t execute a very good lap there in Turn 2, but overall, I thought I hit (Turns) 3 and 1 pretty decent. Just good enough."

The second row will be occupied by Daniel Suarez in the No. 99 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet, who secured the third starting spot, and Ty Gibbs in the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, who qualified fourth. Rounding out the top five is Chase Briscoe in the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford.

Further down the starting grid, Chris Buescher of RFK Racing led the Ford contingent, qualifying sixth. Erik Jones in the No. 43 Legacy Motor Club Chevrolet will start seventh, followed by John Hunter Nemechek in the No. 42 Legacy Motor Club Chevrolet in eighth. William Byron, the 2024 Daytona 500 champion, qualified his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in ninth, with Ryan Blaney completing the top ten in his No. 12 Team Penske Ford.

The qualifying session was not without its drama, as notable incidents involving Bubba Wallace and Carson Hocevar drew attention. In the latter stages of the second qualifying round, Carson Hocevar, driving the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet, experienced a significant moment of instability exiting the Tunnel Turn. While he initially managed to gather his car after a slide, he ultimately made contact with the outside wall.

Immediately following Hocevar’s incident, Bubba Wallace, in the No. 23 23XI Racing Toyota, spun in the same section of the track. Wallace’s car made heavy nose-first contact with the inside wall. Both drivers were unable to complete their qualifying runs and will be forced to start at the rear of the field. The incidents necessitated a track cleanup, causing a brief delay in the session. NASCAR subsequently allowed Hendrick Motorsports to change tires on Larson’s No. 5 car due to the interruption.

For championship leader Tyler Reddick, the qualifying session did not yield the desired result. Reddick, who has seen his once-substantial points lead over Hamlin dwindle from 129 points to a more precarious 51 points over the last three races, will start 16th in his No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota. His recent performance trend suggests a need for a strong showing to maintain his championship advantage.

Christopher Bell, who is competing with a fractured left wrist sustained from a significant 63G impact at Michigan International Speedway, will start 22nd in his No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. His presence in the car, despite his injury, underscores the resilience of the drivers in the series.

The qualifying recap highlighted an inconsistent session for RFK Racing in the initial stages. Brad Keselowski reported a suspected cylinder issue in his No. 6 Ford, necessitating a return to the garage. His teammate, Ryan Preece, driving the No. 60 Ford in a limited appearance, also struggled with pace, running significantly off the expected times. However, Chris Buescher’s later performance indicated a turnaround for the team.

Several drivers who had shown promise earlier, including Reddick, Bell, and Chase Elliott, posted times that were slower than anticipated. In the early part of the session, Alex Bowman, in the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, had set a competitive pace, briefly leading the field before being surpassed by McDowell.

The revised start time for Sunday’s race has been moved up by two hours, now scheduled to commence shortly after 1 p.m. EST, as a precautionary measure against forecasted inclement weather. This adjustment by NASCAR aims to ensure the race can be completed with minimal disruption from potential rain.

Denny Hamlin’s commanding performance in qualifying underscores his strong history at Pocono and his current form. As the series heads into the race, Hamlin will be a primary contender for victory, while the incidents involving Wallace and Hocevar serve as a stark reminder of the unforgiving nature of NASCAR racing and the constant challenges posed by the Pocono Raceway circuit. The battle for the championship also intensifies with Reddick’s midfield starting position, potentially opening the door for Hamlin to further close the points gap. The adjusted race start time adds another layer of strategy and anticipation for fans and teams alike.
