The NASCAR Cup Series championship picture is tightening dramatically as Denny Hamlin, driving for Joe Gibbs Racing, has mounted an impressive comeback in recent weeks, significantly eroding the once-commanding points lead held by Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing. This resurgence has fueled speculation about whether Hamlin can overtake Reddick before the regular season concludes and the playoff reset.
The shift in momentum was palpable following the recent event at Michigan International Speedway, a race characterized by a record-breaking number of caution periods. Among the incidents that punctuated the day was a significant restart pileup that brought Tyler Reddick’s remarkable top-15 streak to an abrupt end. This marked Reddick’s first DNF (Did Not Finish) of the 2026 season.
Prior to the Coca-Cola 600, Reddick had established a substantial 129-point advantage, leading many to believe his position at the top of the standings was secure through the remainder of the regular season. However, over the past three weeks, his boss, Denny Hamlin, has systematically chipped away at this lead.
The margin at Charlotte saw a minor reduction, moving from 129 to 122 points. The subsequent race at Nashville, however, proved more consequential. While Reddick secured a top-ten finish, Hamlin clinched victory, effectively closing the gap to a mere 97 points.

The Michigan race further amplified this trend. Reddick, who had demonstrated strong pace, found his day cut short by a chaotic restart incident. Coincidentally, Hamlin was also involved in the same wreck, spinning out. In the ensuing melee, Austin Dillon, attempting to avoid Hamlin, ultimately made contact with Reddick’s already damaged car, which had slid into a wall. This sequence of events highlighted the volatile nature of late-race restarts and the role of luck in championship battles.
Following the incident, Hamlin went on to dominate the remainder of the Michigan race, securing a victory by over eleven seconds. This marked his second consecutive win and sets the stage for NASCAR’s arrival at Pocono Raceway, a track where Hamlin has historically performed exceptionally well.
The dramatic shift in the points standings has led to significant commentary from NASCAR analysts. Steve Letarte and Kyle Petty, hosts of the NASCAR podcast "Inside the Race," discussed the evolving championship dynamic. Petty, in particular, expressed his surprise at the speed of Hamlin’s ascent.
"Where he’s at right now, I say yes," Petty stated regarding Hamlin’s potential to take the points lead. "Someone is going to have to throw cold water on him to get him to back it down, because they are white hot right now. Everything they do is right. I would have never thought anybody would be this close to Reddick, even in the last race. When he walked off with the regular season trophy, I didn’t think anybody was going to be within 40 or 50 points of him, and here Denny is."
Petty elaborated on his astonishment at how rapidly Hamlin has diminished Reddick’s lead, emphasizing that with the No. 11 car now possessing both speed and momentum, overcoming them presents a formidable challenge.
Looking ahead, the remaining schedule presents a mixed bag of opportunities and challenges for both drivers. Reddick has a potential respite in the form of upcoming street course and road course events. The inclusion of a street course race in San Diego and a road course event at Sonoma offers Reddick a chance to stabilize his points standing. He has a proven track record on road courses, notably being the only driver in the past seven road or street course events to defeat Shane van Gisbergen. Conversely, Hamlin has openly acknowledged struggling on these types of circuits.
After the Sonoma race, eight events will remain in the regular season. This includes two wildcard drafting tracks, where unpredictable outcomes are common. Among the remaining six traditional oval races, North Wilkesboro will host a points race for the first time in three decades. While Christopher Bell, Hamlin’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, secured a victory there, Hamlin himself finished second the year prior, indicating strong performance potential.
Iowa Speedway, a relatively new addition to the schedule, has not yet yielded a strong finish for Hamlin. Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a venue where Hamlin has historically performed well, remains the only crown jewel event he has yet to win. Chicagoland Speedway is anticipated to be a favorable track for all Toyota drivers. However, Hamlin’s most promising tracks in the lead-up to the Chase are Richmond Raceway and New Hampshire Motor Speedway, both of which are scheduled within the final three races before the playoff field is set.
The question of whether Hamlin can indeed overtake Reddick for the championship lead is a distinct possibility. However, several obstacles remain. Reddick must avoid further mechanical failures or incidents that lead to DNFs. The configuration of the remaining schedule also plays a crucial role. With the new playoff format, which awards a 25-point buffer to the regular season champion, the battle for the lead could extend to the very end, with Daytona International Speedway potentially serving as the deciding venue.
The intricate interplay of driver performance, track characteristics, and the inherent unpredictability of NASCAR racing ensures that the chase for the championship lead between Denny Hamlin and Tyler Reddick promises to be a compelling narrative as the regular season draws to a close.
