Stenhouse Jr. Pilots Kyle Busch Tribute Car to Fourth-Place Finish in Nashville

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., driving the No. 47 Hyak Motorsports Chevrolet adorned with a special tribute paint scheme honoring NASCAR legend Kyle Busch, secured a remarkable fourth-place finish in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway. The strong showing came amidst a dominant performance by the Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) trio of Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, and Chase Briscoe, who ultimately swept the top three positions.

While the JGR drivers engaged in a fierce battle for the race win, Stenhouse Jr. orchestrated a potent charge in the closing laps. Following a strategic pit stop for four fresh tires, Stenhouse Jr. restarted the final four-lap sprint to the checkered flag in 13th position. He swiftly navigated through the field, advancing to sixth place. However, his progress was temporarily stalled as he found himself caught behind a side-by-side duel between Shane van Gisbergen and Chase Elliott. It was only on the final lap, when both drivers encountered a slight misstep, that Stenhouse Jr. was able to clear them. By that point, however, the time remaining was insufficient to challenge the leading JGR contingent.

Despite the narrow margin, Stenhouse Jr.’s fourth-place result marks his best finish of the current season since his second-place performance in the Daytona 500. Furthermore, it represents his strongest finish on a non-drafting track since a runner-up result at Dover International Speedway over four years ago, underscoring a significant performance on a track type where such results are typically harder to achieve for his team.

The No. 47 Hyak Motorsports Chevrolet’s prominent position at the front of the pack in a non-superspeedway event was a notable development. The distinctive paint scheme served as a direct tribute to Kyle Busch, one of NASCAR’s most accomplished drivers. Stenhouse Jr.’s car sported a livery closely resembling the iconic NOS Energy Drink scheme that Busch utilized during several of his past O’Reilly Auto Parts victories. For a period during the closing laps, the visual effect was reminiscent of Busch’s No. 18 machine aggressively moving through the field.

This achievement carries substantial weight for Hyak Motorsports, a single-car team operating with limited resources in a competitive Cup Series landscape dominated by multi-car organizations. Their strong showing saw them emerge as the highest-finishing Chevrolet team of the race, outperforming established multi-car Chevrolet teams such as Hendrick Motorsports, Spire Motorsports, Trackhouse Racing, Richard Childress Racing, and Kaulig Racing.

"Mike Kelly (crew chief) and our guys in the war room made a great call to be on offense there with our four fresh Goodyears," Stenhouse Jr. stated post-race. "It was really cool to get this Kyle Busch NOS Energy Drink Chevrolet tribute car in the top five. You don’t want to come here with that scheme and run bad."

He further elaborated on the team’s performance and the significance of the result: "Started the day off a little not where we wanted to be, fought back, got some stage points, found ourselves in the top 15. It was fun to be on offense and be in the top-finishing Chevrolet. Really good momentum for our team from last week to this week at a track where we struggled a little bit. There’s 28 of our employees that were probably really pumped up about this win, and it’s good to continue this momentum that we got."

The top-five finish provided a tangible boost to Stenhouse Jr.’s championship aspirations. He ascended three positions in the current Cup Series points standings, making him the most significant mover in the standings following the Nashville event.

The race itself saw Denny Hamlin claim victory, marking his first win of the season and extending JGR’s impressive streak of early-season success. Hamlin’s win was his third career victory at Nashville Superspeedway, solidifying his status as a strong contender. The race was characterized by multiple lead changes and intense on-track action, culminating in a frantic finish that saw several incidents in the final laps. Christopher Bell finished second, followed by Chase Briscoe in third, completing a dominant 1-2-3 sweep for Joe Gibbs Racing, a feat that highlights the team’s exceptional form and strategic execution.

This performance by Stenhouse Jr. and Hyak Motorsports serves as a testament to the team’s dedication and ability to punch above their weight class. In a sport often defined by the scale of resources, their ability to consistently contend for strong finishes, especially on non-drafting ovals, is a significant accomplishment. The tribute to Kyle Busch added an emotional layer to the day, as the sport continues to honor its past while forging new narratives. The No. 47 team’s strong run not only provided a memorable moment for their dedicated crew but also injected valuable momentum into their ongoing season campaign.

Looking ahead, Stenhouse Jr. and Hyak Motorsports will aim to capitalize on this newfound momentum as the NASCAR Cup Series season progresses. Their performance at Nashville underscores their potential to be competitive across various track types, challenging established norms and demonstrating the enduring spirit of the underdog in professional motorsports. The team’s strategic decision-making and Stenhouse Jr.’s driving skill combined to deliver a result that resonated throughout the garage and among the sport’s passionate fanbase.

The statistical significance of Stenhouse Jr.’s finish is also noteworthy. His average finish on non-drafting ovals prior to this event was considerably lower, indicating a marked improvement in performance. This result, coupled with his strong showing at Daytona, suggests a growing consistency in his team’s ability to adapt and perform on different track configurations. The team’s focus on strategic pit calls, as highlighted by crew chief Mike Kelly, proved instrumental in overcoming track position challenges and maximizing their opportunities in the crucial final laps. This collaborative approach between driver and crew chief is a hallmark of successful racing operations, regardless of their size.

The NASCAR Cup Series continues its season with upcoming events that will further test the mettle of teams like Hyak Motorsports. Their ability to replicate or build upon this Nashville performance will be a key indicator of their long-term trajectory and their potential to disrupt the established order in future races. The tribute to Kyle Busch not only honored a beloved figure but also served as inspiration for Stenhouse Jr. and his team, fueling their drive to achieve a result worthy of the iconic livery they carried.
