A growing sentiment within the NASCAR community is advocating for the immediate induction of the late Kyle Busch into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, alongside a posthumous recognition as the Most Popular Driver. This movement, championed by fellow competitors and echoing sentiments from NASCAR leadership, suggests that the traditional waiting periods should be waived for a driver whose impact and legacy are considered undeniable.
The recent announcement of the 2024 NASCAR Hall of Fame class – comprising Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton, Larry Phillips, and Lesa France-Kennedy – has reignited discussions about Busch’s own inevitable enshrinement. Brad Keselowski, a prominent figure in NASCAR and a long-time rival of Busch, expressed his belief that delaying Busch’s induction would be unnecessary.
"I understand there’s a lot of things to work through on that, but it’s very clear that Kyle is a first-ballot Hall of Famer, and I don’t know why that needs to wait another year," Keselowski stated in a recent interview. When pressed on the immediacy of his suggestion, Keselowski affirmed, "Yeah, I think so."
NASCAR’s standard regulations typically require a driver to have been retired for two years before being eligible for nomination. However, the unique circumstances surrounding Busch’s career and passing have prompted consideration of exceptions. NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell acknowledged the discussions surrounding potential alternative pathways for Busch’s recognition.

"I don’t know," O’Donnell commented when asked about the possibility of a special induction. "I know that we put that on the list of ideas that we want to look at. I think… there’s things we want to do this weekend, and then we have a little bit more time to think about what we could do as well in the future. Who knows, that could be something we look at."
Beyond Hall of Fame considerations, there is also a strong push for Busch to be awarded the Most Popular Driver Award for the first time in his illustrious career. Precedents exist for active drivers to receive this honor posthumously in the season of their passing, adding weight to this particular call to action.
Chase Elliott, another prominent driver and a past recipient of the Most Popular Driver Award, voiced his strong support for Busch to receive this accolade. "I would be in extreme favor of Kyle winning the vote," Elliott said. "I think that, you know, he’s a guy that certainly poured a lot of his life into this sport and although he might have been getting boos a lot of weeks, he also had a lot of fans and a lot of passionate fans."
Elliott further elaborated on the deserving nature of such an award, stating, "I haven’t processed all of that, to get to that point, but I would certainly be in favor of him winning and whatever that took. It would be really deserving for him to have that honor."
The advocacy from Keselowski carries particular significance given the well-documented and often intense rivalry between the two drivers. Their on-track battles were a staple of NASCAR Cup Series competition for years, characterized by fierce competition and mutual respect, even if not always overtly displayed.
Just last month, Busch, in an appearance on "Hang Out with Sean Hannity," humorously identified Keselowski as one of three drivers with whom he had a contentious relationship, alongside Joey Logano and Carson Hocevar. While this was partly played for entertainment, it also reflected the genuine competitive fire that defined their interactions. However, in recent years, their relationship had reportedly begun to evolve.
Keselowski shared that he had anticipated a deepening of their bond as their respective careers progressed. "Kind of selfishly I was hopeful for a long time that our racing career would continue on a journey that saw us in the Hall of Fame and doing those type of things together," Keselowski reflected. "Who knows? Maybe one day competing in the Truck Series against each other when we were done with Cup."
He continued, acknowledging the somber reality: "Obviously, that’s not going to be the case now, but with respect to our relationship, I would say there was a small thaw over the last year, maybe two, that came from his circumstances being different with respect to race teams and positions on the grid."
Keselowski recounted attending the All-Star Race at Dover last weekend, an event he might not have envisioned attending in a more cordial capacity with Busch in past years. "Those are things I never thought I would have said 3, 5, 10 years ago," he admitted. "So, I think it was on that path. I don’t have any great stories to tell, but it’s sad to not see that through."
Kyle Busch’s career statistics paint a compelling picture for Hall of Fame consideration. He is one of only eleven drivers in NASCAR Cup Series history to have won at least 60 races, with 63 victories. He also holds the all-time record for wins across all three major NASCAR series (Cup, Xfinity, and Truck), with a staggering 229 combined victories. His two NASCAR Cup Series championships, secured in 2015 and 2019, further solidify his elite status.
The Most Popular Driver Award, voted on by fans, has historically been a strong indicator of a driver’s connection with the fanbase. While Busch was known for his aggressive driving style and often polarizing persona, he cultivated a dedicated and passionate following throughout his career. The award is administered by the National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) and fan voting typically opens towards the end of the season.
The discussions surrounding immediate induction and posthumous awards highlight the profound impact Kyle Busch had on NASCAR. His competitive drive, remarkable skill, and enduring presence in the sport have left an indelible mark, prompting a collective desire to honor his legacy without the customary delays. As NASCAR leadership considers these proposals, the sentiment within the racing community appears to lean towards recognizing Busch’s monumental contributions promptly.
