The annual Formula 1 visit to Quebec rarely lacks drama. This year, scheduling the Montreal Grand Prix earlier in May placed its fate squarely with Canada’s weather. Despite cold conditions and a persistent rain threat that ultimately didn’t fully materialize, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve delivered an absorbing spectacle. The race featured intense duels, a crucial retirement impacting the nascent 2026 title battle, and strategic gambles with mixed outcomes.
Loser – McLaren: A Strategic Gamble That Backfired
The prospect of F1 2026’s first wet-weather race kept teams on edge. As drizzle persisted race morning, promising a challenging start, the skies cleared just as the lights went out. This shift caught several teams off guard, with McLaren being the most prominent victim. Starting from an advantageous third with Lando Norris, the Woking-based outfit made the bold, ill-fated decision to equip both Norris and Oscar Piastri with intermediate tyres.
Norris initially capitalized on the superior grip, leaping into the lead. However, the rapidly drying track quickly negated this. By lap five, Norris was forced into an early pit stop for dry tyres, dropping him down the order. Piastri, reportedly harbouring misgivings about the choice during the formation lap, followed suit. Two additional formation laps before the start further dried the track, nullifying any potential early gain.
