Charlotte, NC – Ricky Stenhouse Jr. emerged as the fastest driver during the sole practice session for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday afternoon, setting a benchmark lap of 29.069 seconds. The session, however, was significantly overshadowed by the recent tragedy involving NASCAR legend Kyle Busch, whose absence cast a palpable pall over the proceedings.
The mood in the garage and on the track was notably subdued as drivers prepared for the green flag. Austin Hill, stepping into the renumbered No. 33 car previously campaigned by Busch, was observed wearing a Kyle Busch t-shirt beneath his firesuit, a poignant gesture honoring the two-time Cup Series champion. In the infield, Bubba Wallace took a moment to reflect at the freshly painted No. 8 logo on the grass, a symbolic representation of the legacy Busch leaves behind. Several competitors also offered words of support to Austin Dillon, Busch’s teammate, as the sport grappled with the emotional weight of the circumstances.
NASCAR had scheduled a 45-minute practice session for the Cup Series teams, a decision made after qualifying was canceled due to inclement weather. The session, however, was not without its challenges. Approximately 15 minutes into the live track time, a persistent mist descended upon the speedway, prompting a brief red flag. While the session resumed shortly thereafter, the light rain continued intermittently, impacting track conditions and driver performance throughout the allotted time.
The challenging conditions led to a few on-track incidents, though none resulted in significant damage to the cars. Austin Dillon, running his Coke 600 debut, experienced a flat left-rear tire but managed to avoid a serious incident, bringing his No. 3 machine safely back to pit road. Later in the session, rookie Corey Heim, also making his first appearance in the iconic Memorial Day weekend race, slid up and made contact with the wall near the conclusion of practice. Heim, however, was able to return his car to the garage for assessment.

Following Stenhouse Jr. on the speed chart were Carson Hocevar (29.127 seconds), Michael McDowell (29.161 seconds), Ryan Blaney (29.179 seconds), and Corey Heim (29.201 seconds), rounding out the top five. The remainder of the top ten in single-lap speed included Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, Ty Gibbs, Erik Jones, and Josh Berry.
Defending Coca-Cola 600 winner Ross Chastain posted the 17th fastest lap in the practice session with a time of 29.401 seconds, indicating a potentially competitive outing for the Trackhouse Racing driver. Austin Hill, in his tribute to Kyle Busch, recorded the 28th fastest time at 29.564 seconds, while Austin Dillon was 30th with a 29.581-second lap.
Beyond single-lap speeds, the practice session also provided insights into race pace. Michael McDowell demonstrated strong long-run potential, leading the ten-lap averages with a time of 30.012 seconds per lap. He was followed by Erik Jones (30.045 seconds), Austin Cindric (30.078 seconds), Riley Herbst (30.099 seconds), and Connor Zilisch (30.111 seconds), suggesting these drivers may have strong strategies for the grueling 600-mile event.
The cancellation of qualifying due to persistent rain means that the starting grid for the Coca-Cola 600 will be set by the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series owner points. This means Tyler Reddick and Ty Gibbs will share the front row, a significant development for teams aiming to gain an early advantage in this prestigious race. Reddick, driving the No. 45 car for 23XI Racing, currently sits 7th in the owner standings, while Gibbs, in the No. 54 car for Joe Gibbs Racing, is 5th.
The Coca-Cola 600, a staple of the NASCAR Cup Series schedule, is renowned for its demanding nature. As the longest race on the calendar, it often tests the endurance of drivers and the reliability of their machines. The 1.5-mile Charlotte Motor Speedway oval presents a unique challenge, with its progressively banking turns and long straightaways demanding a balance of raw speed and strategic tire management. Historically, teams that have a strong setup for both short runs and long runs tend to perform well in this particular event.
The absence of Kyle Busch from this weekend’s festivities marks a significant moment for the sport. Busch, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and the only active driver with over 60 wins in all three national series, suffered a severe injury during a practice session for the Truck Series earlier in the week. His departure from the Coca-Cola 600 means that the field will be without one of its most decorated and competitive drivers, a void keenly felt by fans and competitors alike. The decision to renumber his regular ride to the No. 33 and place Austin Hill behind the wheel is a testament to the respect and camaraderie within the NASCAR community.
The opening practice session, despite its subdued atmosphere and challenging weather conditions, provided valuable data for teams as they prepare for the 400-lap endurance test. While Stenhouse Jr. set the fastest lap, the ten-lap averages suggest that several other drivers and teams possess the potential for strong performances. The unpredictable nature of the Coca-Cola 600, coupled with the emotional undercurrents of the weekend, promises a compelling and memorable race. The focus now shifts to race day, where strategies, driver skill, and sheer determination will ultimately decide who takes home the coveted trophy from Charlotte.
