Spire Motorsports Dominates Indianapolis Qualifying as Hocevar Secures Brickyard 400 Pole

Indianapolis Motor Speedway – Carson Hocevar will lead the field to the green flag for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Brickyard 400, having secured pole position in a commanding qualifying effort that saw Spire Motorsports achieve a remarkable 1-2 finish. Hocevar, piloting the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet, posted a blistering lap of 48.232 seconds, averaging 186.598 mph around the historic 2.5-mile oval. He edged out his teammate, Daniel Suarez in the No. 99 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet, by a mere 0.056 seconds to claim his third career pole and his second of the 2026 season.

The qualifying session, which sets the starting grid for Sunday’s prestigious event, highlighted a strong performance from the Spire Motorsports organization. This front-row lockout marks a significant achievement for the team, underscoring their continued development and competitiveness in the Cup Series.

"It’s just unbelievable," a jubilant Hocevar stated in his post-qualifying remarks. "I got out of the car and they were yelling and cheering and everything. I couldn’t believe it, and I appreciate it. I don’t know if they were cheering just because I beat Denny or the fact that we’re on the front row. I’m super pumped. Denny stole one from me at Michigan, and this is the home town for Jeff (Dickerson, co-owner at Spire) and everybody at Spire. Just fun to use our own notes these last two years and get these cars better. Just enjoying it. These guys work really hard."

Hocevar expressed his particular fondness for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, calling it his favorite track on the schedule and stating his intention to "soak this in a lot." The young driver’s performance at this iconic venue adds another chapter to his rapidly ascending career.

Behind the Spire Motorsports duo, the qualifying order reflected a diverse mix of manufacturers and teams. Tyler Reddick, driving the No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota, secured the best starting position for a Toyota, lining up third. He was followed by a pair of Joe Gibbs Racing teammates: Ty Gibbs in the No. 54 Toyota Camry, who qualified fourth, and veteran Denny Hamlin in the No. 11 Toyota Camry, who will start fifth.

Spire Motorsports’ strong showing continued with Michael McDowell in the No. 71 Chevrolet, who qualified sixth. Part-time competitor Corey Heim, in the No. 67 23XI Racing Toyota, delivered an impressive performance to earn the seventh starting spot. Alex Bowman led the charge for Hendrick Motorsports, placing his No. 48 Chevrolet eighth on the grid. Notably, Bowman announced earlier in the weekend his plans to retire from full-time NASCAR competition following the conclusion of the 2027 season.

A.J. Allmendinger, a road-racing specialist who has found considerable success in oval competition, qualified ninth for Kaulig Racing in the No. 16 Chevrolet. Rounding out the top ten was Kyle Larson, the 2021 Cup Series champion, in the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

The qualifying results also revealed a challenging starting position for some of the series’ top contenders. Ryan Blaney, the highest-qualifying Ford driver in 13th place, will have his work cut out for him. Joey Logano, the winner of the previous week’s race, will start 19th. William Byron qualified 21st, Ross Chastain 22nd, and Christopher Bell 23rd. International sensation Shane van Gisbergen will start 25th, Chase Elliott 27th, and the defending Brickyard 400 winner, Bubba Wallace, will begin the race from deep in the field in 29th position.

Austin Cindric, who currently holds the 16th and final spot in the playoff standings, qualified a disappointing 35th. Todd Gilliland, a finalist in the In-Season Challenge, will start 36th, positioning him to contend for the $1 million prize against Ryan Blaney.

Qualifying Recap:

The qualifying session began with Corey Heim setting an early benchmark at 48.529 seconds in the No. 67 23XI Racing Toyota. This was a notable performance for the part-time driver, marking his first-ever NASCAR race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway across any series.

Michael McDowell briefly took the top spot from Heim in the No. 71 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet, though he had a moment of concern, nearly touching the wall at the exit of Turn 3. His reign at the top was short-lived as Tyler Reddick, in the No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota, posted a faster lap, pushing McDowell down the order.

Later in the session, Carson Hocevar launched himself to the provisional pole, exceeding Reddick’s time by over a tenth of a second. His Spire Motorsports teammate, Daniel Suarez, then put in a strong lap to slot into second, just 0.056 seconds shy of Hocevar’s time.

Several drivers had strong qualifying runs cut short by minor errors. Ryan Blaney, in the No. 12 Team Penske Ford, appeared to have a pole-winning lap going until he had to lift significantly in Turn 3. Ty Gibbs, in the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, also experienced a moment of caution, lifting at the exit of Turn 2, which cost him momentum down the backstretch. Chase Elliott encountered the wall between Turns 3 and 4, but it did not appear to significantly impact his qualifying time. No major incidents or cautions occurred during the qualifying session.

The field for the 2026 Brickyard 400 is now set, with Carson Hocevar and Daniel Suarez poised to lead a highly anticipated race at one of NASCAR’s most historic venues. The performance of Spire Motorsports in qualifying sets a high bar for the competition, while numerous established stars will be looking to move forward from challenging starting positions on Sunday.
