Atlanta, GA – Shane van Gisbergen, the decorated three-time Supercars champion, expressed that his extensive international racing career offered no true precedent for the unique challenges presented by NASCAR’s draft-style racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Despite a stellar sixth-place finish in the recent Cup Series event, a result that further solidifies his impressive early tenure in American stock car racing, van Gisbergen was introspective about the nuances of the discipline.
The New Zealander, driving the No. 97 Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing, demonstrated remarkable pace throughout the event, consistently running in the lead pack. His strong performance culminated in a late-race battle for a podium position. As the field approached the white flag, signaling the final lap, van Gisbergen found himself in a tense three-wide scenario for second place alongside eventual race winner Ryan Blaney. A slight shuffle in position on the final circuit ultimately saw him cross the finish line in sixth.
This latest top-ten finish adds to van Gisbergen’s burgeoning oval record in the NASCAR Cup Series. He now boasts four top-ten results on ovals in his limited Cup career, with three of those achieved in the 2026 season alone. His previous strong showings at Atlanta include another sixth-place finish earlier in the season, and a third-place result in the NASCAR O’Reilly Series in 2024, which was only his second oval start in that feeder series. This consistent performance at Atlanta highlights his adaptability to the high-speed, pack racing environment.
Following the conclusion of the dramatic overtime finish, van Gisbergen spoke with Motorsport.com’s Matt Weaver, reflecting on the race. "It’s awesome, but my brain is going crazy for what I could have done better," he admitted. "I was beside the No. 12 car [Blaney] coming off (Turn) 4, coming to the white (flag), but yeah, it was pretty fun. It’s awesome racing here."

Despite having competed on circuits across four continents, from the iconic Bathurst 1000 in Australia to road courses in Europe, van Gisbergen underscored the distinct nature of NASCAR oval racing. "It’s so different, but this is one of my better tracks. For some reason, I’m always decent here, so I’ll take it." This sentiment speaks to the unique skill set required to navigate the close-quarters, aerodynamic-dependent racing that defines tracks like Atlanta.
Van Gisbergen identified specific areas where he felt he could have improved his outcome. He engaged in a post-race discussion with fellow competitor Tyler Reddick, who also experienced a challenging final restart. "Definitely the restart," van Gisbergen noted when asked about potential adjustments. "I thought I could have attached to the #45 [Reddick] better. He came up, gave me some advice after – it’s just critical to do that, and I just missed that. We probably could have gotten a better restart. And then off (Turn) 2 on the last lap, Bell really came up. I don’t know if I could have shot down below him or whatever. We kind of touched a lot and that killed all my run."
The race also served as a crucial step in van Gisbergen’s quest to qualify for the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. His sixth-place finish helped him maintain and even slightly extend his advantage in the points standings. He currently sits 31 points above the playoff cut-line with six races remaining in the regular season.
"I was thinking that on the green/white (overtime restart), I’m like there’s no one around me that I’m racing for points, so I really needed to consolidate where I was," van Gisbergen explained. "That didn’t change my approach, but good to get a P6." This strategic mindset, prioritizing points preservation in critical moments, is a testament to his growing understanding of the NASCAR championship format.
The interaction between van Gisbergen and longtime rival Austin Hill also drew attention. The two drivers, who have a history of on-track battles in their respective series, were seen speaking after the race, following a prior meeting with NASCAR officials. However, there was no discernible tension between them on Sunday, indicating a professional resolution to any prior disagreements.
The NASCAR Cup Series season continues with another event next weekend at North Wilkesboro Speedway, a track known for its challenging surface and historical significance. Van Gisbergen’s continued success on ovals will be closely watched as he aims to make a significant impact in his debut season. His ability to adapt and contend at such an early stage of his NASCAR career has surprised many, and his performance at Atlanta further underscores his potential. The blend of raw talent and a willingness to learn from every experience, even those that fall short of a win, positions him as a formidable contender.
The NASCAR Cup Series points standings remain a key focus for drivers as the regular season progresses. Van Gisbergen’s current position places him in a strong tactical situation, but the remaining six races will undoubtedly present further challenges and opportunities for him and his competitors. The series heads to North Wilkesboro, a track that demands a different approach than the high-banked speed of Atlanta, testing drivers’ adaptability and the performance of their teams across diverse track types. The championship battle is intensifying, and van Gisbergen’s presence at the sharp end of the field adds another compelling narrative to the 2026 season.
