Billy Donovan’s coaching career began in the college ranks, where he first served as an assistant under Rick Pitino at Kentucky, contributing to the Wildcats’ formidable success in the early 1990s. In 2015, Donovan made the transition to the professional game, accepting the head coaching position with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Following his tenure with the Thunder, Donovan moved to the Chicago Bulls in 2020. Over six seasons, he accumulated an overall NBA regular-season record of 469 wins and 413 losses across both franchises. The Bulls secured just one playoff appearance under Donovan, reaching the first round in the 2021-22 season before being eliminated.
The Bulls’ performance declined in Donovan’s subsequent four seasons, failing to achieve a winning record or qualify for the postseason. After a 34-48 finish in 2022-23 and a 37-45 record in 2023-24, the team concluded the most recent 2025-26 season with a disappointing 32-50 mark, finishing 12th in the Eastern Conference. Despite significant front-office changes within the Bulls organization, which included the departure of General Manager Marc Eversley and President of Basketball Operations Artūras Karnišovas in late 2025, the new leadership expressed a desire for Donovan to remain as head coach.
