BRISTOL, Tenn. – NASCAR has announced that no penalties will be levied against Cup Series drivers Ryan Blaney and Carson Hocevar following their physical altercation in the immediate aftermath of Saturday night’s Bristol Night Race. The sanctioning body, however, is continuing its review to determine if any crew members who became involved in the scuffle will face disciplinary action.
NASCAR President Steve O’Donnell detailed the decision during an appearance on "Happy Hour," Kevin Harvick’s post-race show on FOX. O’Donnell articulated NASCAR’s stance on driver confrontations, emphasizing a distinction between encouraging aggression on track and acknowledging the passion displayed by competitors.
"If drivers are going to handle their own business, the way we looked at that, how it played out, we’re not going to encourage fighting, but what we are going to encourage is passion, right," O’Donnell stated. "And those are two guys — Blaney’s showing his passion, showing his fire. So no, there’s nothing coming from us in terms of [penalties]. We’ll obviously watch what happens the rest of the way, but nothing in terms of post-race penalties."
The governing body’s decision appears to stem from a philosophy that prioritizes driver-to-driver confrontations over actions taken with race cars as weapons. O’Donnell referenced historical incidents, such as the clash between Brad Keselowski and Carl Edwards at Talladega, as examples of behavior NASCAR actively seeks to prevent.

"Don’t use your car as a weapon, so to speak, right," O’Donnell explained. "We know, Brad Keselowski and the incident at Talladega with Carl Edwards, those types of things. We don’t want to see that."
The incident occurred as Blaney, driver of the No. 12 Ford for Team Penske, and Hocevar, pilot of the No. 77 Chevrolet for Spire Motorsports, exchanged words and then blows after the checkered flag fell on the highly anticipated short-track event.
