McLaren’s senior director of racing, Randy Singh, articulated the team’s immediate objectives: "We have an upgrade package arriving this weekend, and in such a competitive season every development is important so it will be great to gather further understanding on how those parts perform throughout free practice." Singh emphasized the broader goal: "Our aim is to maximise everything we have available, carry positive momentum into the shutdown and put ourselves in the strongest possible position for the second half of the championship.”
Team Principal Andrea Stella previously admitted that the MCL40’s aerodynamic development was two to three months behind its key rivals. This deficit stemmed, in part, from the team’s prolonged focus on the intense 2025 driver title battle and a subsequent shift in its aerodynamic approach for the 2026 regulations. These factors are understood to have diverted resources and attention that might otherwise have been dedicated to the current car’s early-season development. Stella highlighted the progress made in addressing this gap: "The development on the ground has been quite strong for a few months now. This has led to the upgrades we had in Miami and now there will be another round of upgrades which will come in Hungary and then after the shutdown." Beyond the general upgrade package, McLaren will also conduct a highly anticipated trial of its innovative ‘Macarena’ rear wing during Friday’s Free Practice 1 session. This experimental design, characterized by a mainplane that rotates 180 degrees when ‘Straight Mode’ (akin to DRS) is engaged, aims to drastically reduce drag on straights while maximizing downforce in corners. The concept, first publicly debuted by Ferrari during winter testing, has since become a key area of aerodynamic exploration for several teams.
McLaren’s journey with its ‘Macarena’ wing has been marked by a previous delay. The British outfit had initially intended to trial the component at the Austrian Grand Prix. However, issues encountered in the garage during preparations for FP1 prompted the team to withdraw the wing and return it to the factory for further refinement and fine-tuning. McLaren has confirmed that the rear wing is "not scheduled to be introduced fully at this or the following race in the Netherlands." The primary objective for the Hungarian test is to gather crucial performance data and validate the design’s functionality and stability under real-world conditions. A successful trial, however, could pave the way for its full deployment later in the season at circuits known for their drag sensitivity, such as Monza in Italy or Baku in Azerbaijan, where the potential for significant lap time gains through drag reduction is substantial.
The introduction of such a radical aerodynamic concept is not without its challenges, as demonstrated by rivals. Red Bull Racing, for instance, experienced a fraught introduction of its own ‘Macarena’ wing earlier in the season. Max Verstappen, the reigning world champion, suffered two concerning spins at Spielberg and Silverstone, which were attributed to the wing’s closure mechanism and the subsequent reattachment of airflow. These incidents highlighted potential reliability and safety concerns, leading Red Bull to temporarily remove the design for the Belgian Grand Prix. He further elaborated on the team’s long-term vision and its imminent impact: "We have now a clear direction in terms of development, but in some areas of the car it took a couple of months to get it to be realised. So, we should see in Hungary the first results of this approach and then hopefully more and more upgrades for the rest of the season."

The success of these new components, particularly the experimental rear wing, will not only dictate the team’s performance for the immediate future but also inform its long-term development strategy.
