Logano Masters North Wilkesboro for Commanding Cup Series Victory

North Wilkesboro, NC – Joey Logano of Team Penske orchestrated a masterful performance at North Wilkesboro Speedway, securing a dominant victory in NASCAR’s first points-paying Cup Series race at the historic track in three decades. Logano led an astonishing 323 of the 450 laps, marking a career-best for laps led in a single event and propelling him to his first win of the 2026 season.

The win, Logano’s 38th career Cup Series triumph, provided a significant boost to his championship aspirations, vaulting him above the Chase cut-off line. The No. 22 Team Penske Ford driver controlled the race from the outset, demonstrating exceptional pace and strategy throughout the demanding 450-mile event.

While Logano ran unopposed for much of the race, the closing laps saw a determined challenge from Denny Hamlin of Joe Gibbs Racing. Hamlin, piloting the No. 11 Toyota, made a late charge, attempting to close the gap to Logano’s Ford. However, Logano maintained composure and a sufficient margin, ultimately fending off Hamlin’s efforts to secure the checkered flag.

"A win anywhere at this point would have sounded great," Logano stated after the race, reflecting on a season that had presented its share of challenges. "Coming here to North Wilkesboro is awesome. I picked up a passenger on the backstretch," he added with a smile, referencing a celebratory ride for his son Hudson after the race.

Logano specifically credited his team and crew chief Paul Wolfe for the exceptional performance of the Shell-Pennzoil Mustang. "What a great car. Paul Wolfe (crew chief), what a great car he put together for us today. Just was able to execute a smooth race. Everyone on pit road did a good job. Engine and Roush Yates was good. It’s good to get back into victory lane. It’s been a tough year. So getting the Shell-Pennzoil Mustang doing some big, smokey doughnuts around this place felt really good."

The victory marks a significant milestone for Logano, not only for its dominance but also for its timing in the playoff picture. His commanding lead and ultimate win underscore the strength of the Team Penske organization and their ability to prepare a competitive package for various track types.

Following Logano and Hamlin across the finish line were Chase Briscoe in third place, driving for Stewart-Haas Racing. Ty Gibbs of Joe Gibbs Racing secured a strong fourth-place finish, continuing his promising development in the Cup Series. Rounding out the top five was Shane van Gisbergen of Trackhouse Racing, who achieved his career-best oval finish in fifth place.

The remainder of the top ten finishers included Bubba Wallace (23XI Racing), Brad Keselowski (RFK Racing), Todd Gilliland (Front Row Motorsports), Daniel Suarez (Trackhouse Racing), and Ryan Preece (Stewart-Haas Racing).

Notably, Todd Gilliland continued his impressive underdog performance in the $1 million In-Season Challenge, defeating Chase Elliott and advancing to the finals. He is set to face Ryan Blaney, who secured his spot in the finals by outdueling Christopher Bell.

Race Recap: A Tale of Stages and Strategic Battles

The race at North Wilkesboro, a track known for its challenging short-track characteristics, commenced with a slight delay to allow for track drying following earlier storms. Pole-sitter Ryan Blaney encountered a power steering issue during pre-race preparations, forcing his No. 12 Team Penske Ford to start at the rear of the field.

Stage 1:
With Blaney at the back, Christopher Bell and Ty Gibbs occupied the front row for the initial green flag. Gibbs quickly asserted dominance in the early laps of the 450-lap race. Ross Chastain faced an early setback, serving a pass-through penalty due to three inspection failures on Saturday, which dropped him off the lead lap.

The first caution flag waved when John Hunter Nemechek spun, with Chase Briscoe offering assistance. The majority of the field opted to pit, with several teams choosing a two-tire strategy. Denny Hamlin, however, elected to stay out, gaining track position. During the pit stop sequence, Kyle Larson and Jenson Zilisch made contact as they exited their pit stalls, resulting in Larson needing to pit again to repair a bent right-front wheel.

Upon the restart, Shane van Gisbergen made a rapid ascent to the lead, setting a new personal record for laps led on an oval. Van Gisbergen’s radio communication, a lighthearted "What the f*** do I do now," after taking the lead, highlighted the unexpected success of his strong run. The first stage concluded with a dramatic final lap pass for the lead. Ty Gibbs ultimately claimed the stage victory, narrowly beating Van Gisbergen. Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin, Carson Hocevar, Christopher Bell, Chase Elliott, Chase Briscoe, Austin Cindric, and William Byron completed the top ten in Stage 1.

Stage 2:
The break between stages saw race leader Ty Gibbs penalized for speeding on pit road, a significant setback for the young driver. This opened the door for Joey Logano to assume control. However, Van Gisbergen once again surged to the lead on the restart. Logano soon reclaimed the top spot and began to extend his advantage.

Midway through the stage, Christopher Bell initiated a round of green-flag pit stops. During this period, while being lapped by Logano, AJ Allmendinger pushed too hard, contacting the outside wall and damaging his right-rear toe link, forcing him out of the race.

A subsequent incident on pit road involving Alex Bowman and Tyler Reddick resulted in a spin for both drivers. This caution period proved detrimental to several drivers, including Chase Elliott, who was running in the top five, and also impacted Christopher Bell, Chris Buescher, William Byron, and Austin Cindric.

By the time the caution period concluded, only 15 cars remained on the lead lap. The next restart saw Carson Hocevar spin, aided by Christopher Bell, and make contact with the wall, forcing him out of the race. This caution allowed Ty Gibbs to rejoin the lead lap via the free pass. The remainder of Stage 2 ran caution-free, with Logano effectively putting multiple cars two laps down and narrowly missing a further lapping of several Hendrick Motorsports entries. Logano comfortably won Stage 2, followed by Hamlin, Briscoe, Wallace, Van Gisbergen, Hocevar, Keselowski, Blaney, Gilliland, and Suarez. Ty Dillon received the free pass, running in 15th place.

Stage 3:
Logano continued his dominance into the final stage, though he began to voice concerns about a sticking brake pedal with approximately 125 laps remaining. Denny Hamlin remained within striking distance in second place. A group of cars that had stayed out at the end of Stage 2, hoping for a fortuitous caution, were unable to capitalize and began their final pit stops under green.

Hamlin made his final pit stop with 90 laps remaining, and Logano immediately responded, ensuring he maintained his lead. Following the cycle of pit stops, Hamlin stayed close to Logano as they navigated through heavy traffic. With 15 laps to go, Riley Herbst, running two laps down, strategically worked to hold up Logano, allowing Hamlin to close the gap. Despite Herbst’s efforts, Hamlin was unable to overcome Logano’s advantage, ultimately finishing second.

The final stage concluded without any caution flags, with only six cars remaining on the lead lap. Following the race, Hamlin extended a hand to Logano, acknowledging the impressive nature of his victory. The dominant performance at North Wilkesboro solidifies Logano’s position as a championship contender and marks a significant achievement in his illustrious NASCAR career.

In-Season Challenge Update:
Todd Gilliland’s remarkable underdog run in the $1 million In-Season Challenge continued as he defeated Chase Elliott. Gilliland now advances to the final round where he will face Ryan Blaney, who earned his spot by defeating Christopher Bell.
