As the NASCAR community navigates a landscape without the full-time presence of Kyle Busch, Motorsport.com revisits some of the most indelible moments of "Rowdy" in Music City. Nashville has been a stage for both the controversial and the celebratory for the two-time Cup Series champion, etching a unique chapter into his storied career.
The most iconic, and perhaps infamous, moment in Busch’s Nashville tenure occurred in 2009 during the O’Reilly Auto Parts 300. Securing his first victory at the track, Busch eschewed the traditional reverence for the custom-designed Gibson Les Paul guitar awarded to the winner. Instead, in a move that reverberated through the sport, he smashed the $25,000 instrument on the ground, later distributing the pieces to his crew as a unique team trophy. While Busch later stated this was a pre-arranged gesture to share the spoils with his team, the public and artistic communities reacted with considerable disapproval. Sam Bass, the artist responsible for the guitar’s design, initially expressed his disappointment, and some fan factions even called for disciplinary action against Busch. The incident sparked a wave of debate and led to a memorable press conference the following week where Busch addressed the controversy, eventually reconciling with Bass and purchasing several replicas.
Adding to the spectacle of that 2009 victory, Busch also ignited the rear tires of his car during a post-race burnout, leaving visible scorch marks on the concrete. This dual display of exuberant celebration, combining destruction and fire, perfectly encapsulated the "Rowdy" persona that defined much of his career. As his team noted over the radio during the fiery burnout, "if it ain’t spectacular, it ain’t no fun."
Busch’s dominance at Nashville extended into the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in subsequent years. He secured back-to-back victories in the spring of 2010 and 2011. In 2010, Busch led an impressive 131 of 150 laps from the pole position, fending off challenges from competitors like Kevin Harvick. The following year, he elevated his performance, leading 140 of 150 laps from the pole, demonstrating an unparalleled command of the circuit. Across these two dominant performances, Busch led over 90% of the laps contested. Although Nashville was temporarily absent from the NASCAR calendar after 2011, it later returned, and Busch continued to make his mark. In 2019, following his second Cup Series championship, Busch was a central figure during Nashville’s Champion’s Week. A burnout demonstration on Broadway provided another memorable, albeit unofficial, racing moment. Busch’s performance was characterized by his signature flair, hanging out of his car as it vanished in a cloud of smoke, a maneuver that drew parallels to more recent stunts by other drivers. He concluded the display by exiting his vehicle and acknowledging the cheering crowd, a magician-like exit from the smoky spectacle.
The return of NASCAR to Nashville in 2021 saw Busch claim another victory in the O’Reilly Auto Parts race. Starting from the pole, he led 122 of 189 laps, ultimately winning a hard-fought battle against Justin Allgaier in an overtime restart. This victory held significant historical weight, marking Busch’s 100th win in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (formerly the Busch Series/O’Reilly Series). This milestone placed him in an elite echelon of NASCAR drivers, with only legends Richard Petty and David Pearson having previously achieved triple-digit victories in the top-tier Cup Series. Despite being met with boos from a portion of the crowd celebrating this monumental achievement, Busch’s 102 career Xfinity Series wins remain a benchmark, with his closest competitor, Mark Martin, trailing significantly with 49 victories. In a nod to his 2009 antics, Busch playfully teased the crowd by appearing to be on the verge of smashing the winner’s guitar once more, only to reveal it would remain intact, marking a more tempered celebration.
The 2022 season offered another unique Nashville moment. During a late-race caution, Busch, running second, opted for a two-tire pit stop strategy that ultimately proved disadvantageous on the restart. Facing challenges in navigating the restart traffic and a handling issue, Busch employed an unconventional tactic on the final lap. Struggling to turn the car, he gently nudged it against the outside wall and rode it for the remainder of the lap, a strategy that predated Ross Chastain’s more famous wall-riding maneuver at Martinsville. While he finished outside the top 20, the incident showcased Busch’s problem-solving ingenuity under pressure.
More recently, in the 2024 Nashville race, Busch found himself involved in an overtime incident. Running fourth behind Kyle Larson, he was caught in a chain-reaction crash when Larson’s car stalled on the restart, leading to contact with the outside wall. Despite attempts to continue, the damage rendered his car undrivable. In a characteristic display, Busch performed burnouts on the frontstretch, drawing a significant crowd reaction. Commentator Steve Letarte observed, "He gets a response, no matter what. Victory Lane, he gets a response, having issues, he gets a response." Busch’s subsequent gesture of pointing to the damage and throwing his hands in the air amplified the crowd’s engagement, a testament to his enduring appeal.
