Katherine Legge Eyes Motorsport History with Audacious Indy 500/Coke 600 Double Bid

In a move that has sent ripples through the motorsport community, British racing driver Katherine Legge has secured a last-minute deal to attempt the highly demanding Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 double-header next week. The announcement, confirmed independently by Motorsport.com, emerged late in the evening following the initial practice session for the Indianapolis 500, a testament to the rapid development of this ambitious endeavor.

Legge, 45, was already confirmed to participate in her fifth Indianapolis 500, driving the No. 11 HMD Motorsports/AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet in the 110th running of the iconic event. The addition of the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on the same day, Sunday, May 24, elevates her bid into the realm of motorsport’s most challenging feats. If successful and weather conditions permit, Legge will become only the sixth driver in history to compete in both prestigious races on the same calendar day. Furthermore, she would be the first woman and the first non-American driver to undertake this arduous double, simultaneously becoming the oldest competitor to attempt the feat.

The significance of such an undertaking was underscored by Legge’s own words in a press release: "Very few drivers ever get the opportunity to attempt ‘The Double,’ and I do not take that opportunity lightly. This challenge is about pushing through perceived limits, betting on yourself, taking risks and trying to do something unique. I am so incredibly grateful to e.l.f. Cosmetics for believing in what this moment represents and for building a community around it."

This ambitious double is made possible by the continued sponsorship support of e.l.f. Cosmetics, who are also backing her Indianapolis 500 campaign. Legge recently made her eighth career NASCAR Cup Series start at Watkins Glen International this past weekend, and she is slated to pilot the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet at Charlotte Motor Speedway next weekend for the Coca-Cola 600.

The Indy 500/Coke 600 double, often referred to as "The Double," represents a significant physical and logistical challenge. It involves competing in two of North America’s premier motorsport events, separated by a considerable distance and demanding vastly different driving styles and car setups. The Indianapolis 500, held on an oval track with speeds exceeding 230 mph, requires precision, endurance, and strategic tire management. The Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR’s longest race, features a 1.5-mile quad-oval track that demands adaptability to changing track conditions and a different approach to race strategy.

Historically, only a select group of drivers have successfully attempted this demanding double. The most recent to do so was two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson, who competed in both races in 2024. Other notable drivers who have attempted or completed "The Double" include Robby Gordon, John Andretti, Kurt Busch, and Tony Stewart. Tony Stewart stands as the sole driver to have completed every single lap of both races in the same day, achieving this remarkable feat in 2001. Davy Jones also attempted the double in 1995 but was unable to qualify for the Coca-Cola 600.

Legge had previously expressed her desire to attempt the double, indicating that its feasibility hinged on securing the necessary sponsorship and support. The swift confirmation of the deal, coming within two weeks of race day, highlights the collaborative efforts and belief in Legge’s capabilities from her partners.

Legge’s best finish in the Indianapolis 500 to date is 22nd, achieved in 2012. While her NASCAR Cup Series debut occurred just over a year ago, she has accumulated experience in oval racing within the top-tier stock car series. Her most notable performance in NASCAR came in the 2025 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where she secured a 17th-place finish, a record-setting result for Live Fast Motorsports in a non-drafting race. While this will be her debut in the Coca-Cola 600, she did compete in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts race at the same venue last May.

For the Indianapolis 500, Legge is assured a starting spot, as her entry is locked in and does not require qualification. However, her participation in the Coca-Cola 600 is contingent on meeting the entry requirements. The final list of entries for the Coca-Cola 600 will be released next Monday, at which point it will be definitively known whether Legge will need to qualify for the NASCAR event.

The commitment to undertake both races on the same day places immense demands on a driver. Beyond the physical exertion of racing nearly 1,100 miles, the logistical challenges of transitioning between two distinct racing environments, including travel and car preparation, are substantial. The tight schedule between the conclusion of the Indy 500 and the start of the Coke 600 will require seamless coordination and minimal delays.

Legge’s pursuit of "The Double" is not only a personal quest for racing excellence but also a significant moment for women in motorsport.
