Jimmie Johnson Declares Strategic Imperative Behind Legacy Motor Club’s Third Full-Time Cup Series Entry

CONCORD, N.C. – The strategic expansion of Legacy Motor Club to field a third full-time car in the NASCAR Cup Series, a move slated for the 2027 season with the confirmed addition of driver Riley Herbst, has been articulated by team co-owner Jimmie Johnson as a critical evolutionary step rather than a mere increase in operational capacity. Johnson, a seven-time Cup Series champion, detailed the rationale behind this significant undertaking during a recent appearance on Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour, emphasizing that the team’s previous approach of operating a third car on a limited schedule had become counterproductive to its long-term ambitions.

"When we started with Legacy, I personally ran about nine races in the first year," Johnson explained. "The ambition was always to run the third car more often. However, we found that running it on a limited schedule was, in some instances, doing more harm than good. It simply took too much away from our core operations and our ability to develop talent or integrate experienced personnel with the ultimate goal of securing a third charter."

The previous strategy, Johnson elaborated, involved utilizing the partial third-car effort to scout potential drivers and build towards a more permanent presence. However, the logistical and resource demands of such a sporadic operation proved to be a significant drain, diverting attention and resources from the foundational elements required for sustained competitiveness. This realization has now pivoted the team’s strategy towards a full-time commitment, a decision Johnson asserts is essential for the club’s trajectory towards becoming an elite NASCAR organization.

"When you look at economies of scale, the ability to collect data, and the development of our race cars, you absolutely need the maximum number of cars on track," Johnson stated. "For us, and where we aspire to be in five years – an elite team, racing for championships – this is the necessary next step. It undeniably means we will need a new facility and an increase in our personnel, moving from approximately 150 individuals to around 200. We are currently in that entire ramp-up phase."

This expansion is not merely aspirational but is actively in progress, according to Johnson. The team has reportedly secured additional investment, a crucial element that Johnson believes will be instrumental in translating into enhanced on-track performance and overall success. The financial and human resource influx is designed to bolster every facet of the team’s operations, from engineering and research and development to pit crew training and driver support.

Riley Herbst, currently competing with 23XI Racing, is confirmed to pilot the No. 84 Monster Energy Toyota Camry XSE for Legacy Motor Club beginning in 2027. This entry will join the existing No. 42, currently driven by John Hunter Nemechek, and the No. 43, piloted by Erik Jones. The driver landscape for the No. 42 is set to change, however, as Nemechek is slated to depart Legacy at the conclusion of the 2026 season. While no official announcement has been made, Josh Berry is widely considered the leading candidate to fill the vacant seat.

The strategic decision to commit to a third full-time car is rooted in the fundamental requirements of modern NASCAR competition. The ability to gather comprehensive data across multiple entries provides invaluable insights for car development, aerodynamic refinement, and race strategy. With three cars consistently competing, Legacy Motor Club will have triple the opportunity to analyze performance, identify trends, and implement improvements. This also allows for greater experimentation and R&D without jeopardizing the competitive viability of the primary entries.

Furthermore, the expansion to three full-time cars is a significant step towards achieving the organizational scale necessary to contend for championships. Elite teams in the Cup Series typically operate with substantial resources, including large engineering departments, advanced simulation capabilities, and a deep pool of experienced personnel. By increasing their footprint, Legacy Motor Club is building the infrastructure required to compete at the highest level. This includes not only the physical plant and the workforce but also the establishment of a robust internal development pipeline for talent, both in the cockpit and within the team’s technical and operational departments.

Johnson’s own journey in NASCAR, marked by unparalleled success and a deep understanding of the sport’s intricacies, lends significant weight to his assessment of the team’s strategic direction. His experience as a driver provides a unique perspective on what is required to win at the Cup Series level, and his current role as co-owner allows him to translate that knowledge into organizational planning. The decision to move to three full-time cars signals a commitment to long-term growth and a clear intent to elevate Legacy Motor Club into a championship-contending organization.

The timeline for this expansion, beginning in 2027, allows for a structured ramp-up period. This includes the necessary lead time for facility construction or expansion, recruitment of additional personnel, and the seamless integration of the new operation. The involvement of new investors underscores the confidence that external parties have in the vision and future prospects of Legacy Motor Club under the leadership of Johnson and his partners.

The addition of Riley Herbst to the Legacy Motor Club roster further solidifies the team’s ambition. Herbst, a promising young driver with a strong background in the Xfinity Series, represents the type of talent Legacy aims to cultivate and showcase. His transition to the Cup Series in a full-time capacity with Legacy provides him with a stable platform to develop his skills and contribute to the team’s data acquisition and performance improvement efforts.

The competitive landscape of the NASCAR Cup Series is increasingly demanding, with established teams continually investing in technology and talent. For Legacy Motor Club to emerge as a consistent threat, a comprehensive and strategic approach to expansion is paramount. Johnson’s explanation highlights that this move is not a reactive measure but a proactive and calculated step designed to build a sustainable foundation for future success, ultimately aiming to position Legacy Motor Club among the sport’s premier contenders. The coming years will be crucial as the team navigates the challenges and opportunities associated with this significant organizational growth.
