Hocevar Dominates Brickyard 400 Qualifying to Secure Coveted Pole Position

Indianapolis Motor Speedway, IN – Carson Hocevar of Spire Motorsports has claimed the pole position for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Brickyard 400, marking a significant achievement for the young driver and his team. Hocevar’s blistering lap of 48.232 seconds, averaging an impressive 186.598 mph around the historic 2.5-mile oval, edged out his Spire Motorsports teammate, Daniel Suarez, by a margin of 0.056 seconds. This marks Hocevar’s third career pole in the NASCAR Cup Series and his second of the 2026 season, underscoring a period of strong performance for the driver and the nascent Spire Motorsports organization.

The qualifying session, held under clear skies at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, saw a competitive field vying for prime starting positions. Hocevar expressed his elation following the session, stating, "It’s just unbelievable. I got out of the car and they were yelling and cheering and everything. I couldn’t believe it, and I appreciate it. I don’t know if they were cheering just because I beat Denny or the fact that we’re on the front row. I’m super pumped. Denny stole one from me at Michigan, and this is the home town for Jeff (Dickerson, co-owner at Spire) and everybody at Spire. Just fun to use our own notes these last two years and get these cars better. Just enjoying it. These guys work really hard." Hocevar further emphasized his fondness for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, calling it his favorite track on the schedule and vowing to "soak this in a lot."

The Spire Motorsports one-two finish represents a notable statement from the team, which has been steadily improving its on-track performance. Daniel Suarez’s second-place qualifying effort further solidifies the team’s potential heading into Sunday’s prestigious event.

Following the Spire duo, 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick secured the best starting position for a Toyota, qualifying third. He will be followed by Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Ty Gibbs and Denny Hamlin, who will start fourth and fifth, respectively. Michael McDowell, another driver for Spire Motorsports, continued the team’s impressive performance by qualifying sixth. Part-time competitor Corey Heim, who has shown flashes of speed in limited appearances, earned a strong seventh starting position. Alex Bowman led the charge for Hendrick Motorsports, qualifying eighth. Notably, Bowman announced earlier in the weekend his intentions to retire from full-time NASCAR competition following the conclusion of the 2027 season, adding a layer of narrative to his remaining races.

A.J. Allmendinger secured a respectable ninth place for Kaulig Racing, with Kyle Larson rounding out the top ten. The qualifying session revealed a diverse range of team performances, with several prominent drivers facing challenges in their quest for a front-row start.

The highest-qualifying Ford driver was Ryan Blaney, who will start 13th. Many notable drivers found themselves with significant ground to make up on Sunday. Joey Logano, the winner of the previous week’s race, will start 19th. William Byron is slated to begin the Brickyard 400 from 21st, Ross Chastain from 22nd, and Christopher Bell from 23rd. International competitor Shane van Gisbergen will start 25th, Chase Elliott 27th, and the defending Brickyard 400 winner, Bubba Wallace, faces an uphill battle from 29th on the grid.

Further down the order, Austin Cindric, who currently holds the 16th and final Chase playoff spot, qualified 35th. In-Season Challenge finalist Todd Gilliland will start 36th, setting up an intriguing battle with Ryan Blaney for the lucrative $1 million prize associated with that competition.

Qualifying Recap: A Session of Surprises and Strong Statements

The qualifying session at Indianapolis Motor Speedway was characterized by intense competition and strategic driving. Corey Heim, driving the No. 67 23XI Racing entry as a part-timer, set an early benchmark with a lap of 48.529 seconds. This impressive run marked Heim’s first NASCAR race of any division at the historic track and showcased his considerable talent.

Michael McDowell briefly held the top spot after a daring lap that saw him narrowly avoid contact with the wall exiting Turn 3. However, his reign at the front was short-lived as Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing responded with a faster time.

The Spire Motorsports team then made their presence felt. Hocevar delivered a remarkable performance, posting a lap that was more than a tenth of a second faster than Reddick’s. Suarez followed suit, coming within a mere 0.056 seconds of Hocevar’s pole-winning time.

Several drivers experienced minor setbacks that impacted their qualifying runs. Ryan Blaney had a strong pole lap in progress but was forced to lift significantly in Turn 3, costing him valuable time. Similarly, Ty Gibbs encountered a similar situation, having to lift at the exit of Turn 2, which compromised his speed down the backstretch. Chase Elliott brushed the wall between Turns 3 and 4, but fortunately, no major incidents occurred during the session, allowing for a clean conclusion to qualifying.

The 2026 Brickyard 400 promises to be an exciting event, with Carson Hocevar and Daniel Suarez leading the field from the front row, aiming to secure a historic victory for Spire Motorsports.
