Gina Carano Details Grueling Comeback and Rousey Armbar Defeat: ‘My Arm Had Begun to Crackle’.

Gina Carano’s highly anticipated return to mixed martial arts (MMA) concluded in a swift 17 seconds, succumbing to a submission by Ronda Rousey in their main event bout. Despite the decisive outcome, Carano has released her first public statement, reflecting on the arduous journey back to the cage and expressing pride in her efforts, particularly the extreme physical transformation undertaken after a 17-year hiatus from professional competition.

The fight, which saw Rousey secure an armbar submission mere moments into the first round, marked the culmination of a comeback effort that began with Carano shedding an estimated 100 pounds. Rousey, renowned for her judo background and signature armbar, wasted no time in executing her game plan, taking Carano down in the initial exchange and swiftly applying the fight-ending hold.

On Monday, Carano took to Instagram to issue her comprehensive statement regarding the loss and the challenging path she navigated to prepare for a return to professional fighting. "This was one of the best rides of my life," Carano wrote, conveying a sense of gratitude despite the defeat. She described her mental state leading into the fight, stating, "I felt locked in fight night. No fear just focused positive adrenaline. Love to my team."

Reflecting on the critical moments of the fight, Carano provided insight into her decision to tap out. "My heart is heavy, I wanted to throw, battle, win, but I kicked when I should have moved and was down and done. If I hadn’t tapped she would’ve broken my arm, as it had begun to crackle. The disappointment of losing like that is very humbling." This candid admission highlights the immediate danger posed by Rousey’s technique and Carano’s pragmatic decision to protect herself from severe injury. Rousey, an Olympic bronze medalist in judo and former UFC Bantamweight Champion, built a significant portion of her career on the efficacy of her armbar, earning the moniker "Rowdy" for her aggressive, finish-oriented style.

Following the event, Carano revealed that she engaged in a conversation with former two-division UFC champion Jon Jones, who was in attendance. Jones, widely considered one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time with a storied career that includes multiple light heavyweight and heavyweight title reigns, offered a unique perspective on Carano’s return. "Jon said, ‘You haven’t fought in 17 years? Do you know how big your balls have to be to get back in there after that long? Did you set some sort of record or something? Respect!’" Carano recounted. She added, "That’s exactly what I needed to hear from the best to ever do it." This validation from a peer of Jones’s caliber provided a significant morale boost, underscoring the extraordinary challenge Carano undertook.

Beyond the physical demands of returning to elite-level competition, Carano detailed the extensive and often grueling process of getting back into fighting shape. Her last professional bout before this comeback was in 2009, when she faced Cris Cyborg in a highly anticipated Strikeforce championship fight, a contest that many consider a landmark event in women’s MMA. Her subsequent career shift into acting saw her step away from the sport for an extended period, making her return to a rigorous training camp a monumental undertaking.

"I’ve been in a caloric deficit for a year, training felt like swimming as hard as I could upstream," Carano explained, illustrating the immense effort required. She enlisted the expertise of coaches at Syndicate MMA in Las Vegas, a facility known for housing numerous professional fighters and offering comprehensive training programs. Carano committed substantial time there, meticulously preparing for the eventual showdown with Rousey.

The physical transformation was a central theme of her comeback. "I can count on two hands the number of times I felt good training. It was physically the hardest thing I’ve ever done taking the weight off while turning back into an athlete. I felt like a science experiment losing 100 pounds. Every week the pressure of how to get that little bit off. I learned a little late how to do it healthier but trial by fire." This provides a stark depiction of the intense physical and mental strain involved in such a dramatic weight cut and body recomposition, especially for an athlete returning after such a long layoff. The process of shedding 100 pounds while simultaneously rebuilding an athletic physique presented a formidable challenge, highlighting Carano’s dedication.

Carano also commended the regulatory oversight provided by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC), known for its stringent standards. "The California Athletic Commission is great and one of the strictest in the world. They weighed me a week and a half before the fight, extra tests and scans, multiple drug tests. We weighed in and they weighed us the night of the fight to make sure we complied with the rehydration rules, which I passed all easily." This rigorous testing and weigh-in protocol, designed to ensure fighter safety and fair competition, adds another layer to the demanding preparations Carano endured. Passing these stringent requirements underscores her commitment to a professional and clean return to the sport.

Despite the loss, Carano views the experience as a catalyst for personal growth and sustained lifestyle changes. "I needed to go through this fight to implement permanent lifestyle changes and now I feel like this is just the beginning. I can’t wait to see where I can push my body to go next," she stated, suggesting that her athletic journey may continue in some form, even if not necessarily within the confines of professional MMA.

Looking ahead, Carano did not explicitly rule out the possibility of fighting again. She expressed profound appreciation for the co-founders of Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, for their treatment throughout the process and for the overall production of the event, which was streamed on Netflix. Paul, a prominent social media figure turned professional boxer and promoter, alongside Bidarian, a former UFC Chief Financial Officer, have made significant inroads in combat sports promotion, bringing a unique blend of entertainment and athletic competition to new audiences. The decision to broadcast the event on Netflix represented a novel approach to combat sports distribution, aiming to reach a broader, more casual audience beyond traditional pay-per-view models.

Carano also extended praise to her opponent, Ronda Rousey, acknowledging their collaborative efforts in bringing the fight to fruition. "I’m so glad the world got to experience this version of Ronda Rousey," Carano remarked. "I found a beautiful woman, wife, mother, daughter, sister and legend. I adore you lady." This statement underscores a mutual respect between the two pioneering figures in women’s MMA, transcending the competitive aspect of their encounter.

Reflecting on the broader impact of the event, Carano asserted, "We made history, again." This likely refers to her own trailblazing role in women’s MMA and the significance of this high-profile return fight, particularly with Rousey, who herself was instrumental in elevating women’s MMA to unprecedented global recognition within the UFC. "I hope Most Valuable Promotions MMA [and] Netflix continue on because they CRUSHED it. Respect where respect is due. It was such a great experience."

She concluded her statement by thanking her supporters: "Thank you ALL for showing your support. It’s because of you we get to face our fears and live our dreams." Carano’s statement offers a comprehensive and candid look at the physical, mental, and emotional challenges of her comeback, framing the brief but intense fight against Rousey not just as a loss, but as a significant personal accomplishment and a stepping stone for future endeavors.
