Trackhouse Racing has officially announced that Danish Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen will make his NASCAR Cup Series debut, piloting the highly anticipated Project 91 Chevrolet. The groundbreaking event is scheduled for June 21st, marking the inaugural San Diego street course race, which will be held at the historic Naval Base Coronado. This 3.4-mile circuit represents a significant milestone as the first-ever Cup Series race to be contested on an active military installation.
Magnussen will join the elite ranks of drivers associated with Trackhouse’s Project 91 initiative, a strategic program designed to attract world-class racing talent from diverse disciplines into the NASCAR fold. His entry as the fourth driver to feature in the Project 91 car underscores the program’s success in bridging international motorsport and the premier American stock car series. Previously, the Project 91 machine has been driven by notable talents such as Shane van Gisbergen, Kimi Räikkönen, and Helio Castroneves. Notably, van Gisbergen’s debut in the Project 91 at the Chicago Street Course in 2023 resulted in a remarkable victory, a performance that subsequently propelled him into a full-time NASCAR Cup Series career with Kaulig Racing.
The 32-year-old Magnussen, a native of Roskilde, Denmark, brings a wealth of experience from the pinnacle of open-wheel racing. He has accumulated 185 starts in Formula 1 between the 2014 and 2024 seasons. During his F1 tenure, Magnussen achieved a podium finish in his debut race and secured one pole position, a notable accomplishment that came with Haas at the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix. His career highlights also include a strong performance at the 2022 São Paulo Grand Prix, where he outqualified the entire field, demonstrating his raw speed and capability on a single lap.
Beyond his Formula 1 commitments, Magnussen is currently a full-time competitor in the prestigious World Endurance Championship (WEC). His recent performance saw him secure a second-place finish at Spa-Francorchamps while driving for the BMW M Team WRT hypercar team. This experience in endurance racing, which includes participations in the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Rolex 24 at Daytona, has honed his skills in long-distance competition and strategic driving. Furthermore, Magnussen has demonstrated his versatility in North American sports car racing, achieving an overall IMSA win at Detroit during the 2021 season, showcasing his adaptability to different circuits and racing formats.

The No. 91 Chevrolet that Magnussen will pilot in San Diego will carry the sponsorship of Qualcomm Technologies, a leading technology company. The crew chief for Magnussen’s debut will be Phil Surgen, a highly respected figure within the NASCAR community. Surgen has a proven track record of success, having guided Ross Chastain to six NASCAR Cup Series victories and a runner-up finish in the 2022 championship standings. His strategic guidance and intimate knowledge of Cup Series racing are expected to be invaluable assets for Magnussen as he navigates the complexities of his first NASCAR outing.
Magnussen expressed his enthusiasm and honor regarding the upcoming opportunity. "I’m incredibly excited and honored to have the opportunity to compete in NASCAR," Magnussen stated. "I’ve already spent time with the team in North Carolina – meeting everyone, doing the seat fit, going through pit stop procedures and all the details that come with preparing for a NASCAR weekend," Magnussen added. The family connection to NASCAR adds another layer of interest to Magnussen’s debut. His father, Jan Magnussen, is a highly experienced and decorated sports car racer himself. Jan made a single NASCAR Cup Series start during the 2010 season at Sonoma Raceway, an event where he impressed by finishing 12th in a competitive 43-car field, demonstrating a surprising aptitude for the discipline.
Trackhouse Racing, a relatively new but highly successful organization in the NASCAR Cup Series, has quickly established itself as a formidable contender.
