"What I think was a bit of a let-down was, given that [the new regulations] came at us like a road roller… There’s that comedy scene in a movie where the road roller is coming, and the person’s going, ‘Oh, I’m going to get run down.’ And then, in the next scene, it’s him looking at his watch going, ‘Oh, I’m going to get run down’," Coulthard stated, vividly illustrating his view of the FIA’s delayed response.
According to Coulthard, the technical minds within Formula 1 teams, including drivers and engineers, were vocal about their concerns regarding the proposed regulations long before the specifications were finalised or real-world testing could commence. These warnings, largely based on advanced simulations and initial design concepts for the 2026 cars, were reportedly met with "pretty much silence" from the governing body. The reality of these anticipated issues, particularly concerning the predicted behaviour of the future cars, only became undeniable to a wider audience as simulations progressed and, as Coulthard alluded, as the characteristics became stark during hypothetical scenarios mimicking pre-season testing and early races. "So, the new regs came at us with drivers and engineers going, ‘This is not going to be good.’ Pretty much silence from everyone else," Coulthard elaborated. "We get to Melbourne, and we go, ‘Ah, they have deceleration as they go towards certain corners.’" This observation, though not from actual 2026 cars on track, reflects the simulated performance limitations that have since become a central point of contention within the F1 community.
The 2026 technical regulations represent one of Formula 1’s most significant overhauls in recent history, driven by a dual objective: enhancing environmental sustainability and attracting new engine manufacturers to the sport. Key to these changes is the radical redesign of the power unit. The MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit – Heat), a complex and costly component responsible for recovering energy from exhaust gases, is to be removed. In its place, the electric power component, derived from the MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit – Kinetic), will see its output significantly increased to 350kW, aiming for a near 50:50 power split with the conventional 1.6-litre V6 internal combustion engine. And the fact that we’ve had five different winners in the last five grands prix is a testament to a varied season." "But I feel that we saw this coming, and nobody really was listening, and the fact they had to react to the reality in a sport that simulates the hell out of the future was a bit disappointing, and that really has to fall on the FIA," he asserted. Coulthard dismissed any potential defense from the FIA citing limited resources. "I know they’ll get sensitive and go, ‘Well, we are a small group of people and the F1 teams have hundreds of people’, but all of the evidence was there that having a 50:50 split between electrical power and combustion engine was going to be challenging, and what are we doing going forward? We’re going to have more internal combustion next year and suggested even more the year after. So, to see the obvious and then react is a bit disappointing."

Formula 1 has historically adapted to significant rule changes, from the introduction of KERS and DRS, to the V6 turbo-hybrids in 2014, and the ground-effect era in 2022, often overcoming initial criticisms to deliver compelling racing. However, the current situation, as highlighted by Coulthard, suggests a more fundamental issue of foresight and responsiveness that could have been mitigated with earlier, more decisive intervention. The ongoing dialogue between the FIA, teams, and manufacturers will be crucial in refining the 2026 regulations to ensure they meet their ambitious objectives without compromising the essence of Formula 1 racing.
