Former Bucks Player Details Unchecked Discipline Lapses, Star Lateness Under Doc Rivers’ Tenure

Insights into the internal dynamics of the Milwaukee Bucks’ challenging 2023-2024 NBA season have emerged from an unexpected source, with former team guard Malik Beasley candidly discussing a pervasive lack of discipline under then-head coach Doc Rivers. Speaking on the "Game Recognize Game" podcast, co-hosted by New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart, Beasley outlined a systemic issue where tardiness and missed team obligations went unpunished, reportedly contributing to the team’s struggles. His comments, which specifically named two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo as a frequent latecomer, offer a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes environment of a team that fell significantly short of championship expectations.

The revelations came during a segment on the podcast where Stewart, discussing her new Liberty coach Chris DeMarco’s strict fine system for infractions like missed free-throw box-outs, inquired about the prevalence of fines in the NBA. Beasley’s response painted a stark picture of the Bucks’ operational culture last season. He asserted that Doc Rivers, who took over mid-season, maintained a "laissez-faire" approach, notably refraining from issuing fines for transgressions that would typically incur penalties on other NBA teams.

"Well, it depends on the coach," Beasley stated on the podcast. "Doc Rivers, he didn’t fine anybody, ever. Guys were late all the time, guys were showing up to film whenever they wanted to show up, guys were missing meetings. It was one of the craziest things I’ve personally ever experienced. But any other team I’ve been on, guys got fined, and there was a sense of order and a sense of understanding. You’re late to the plane? Fine. You’re late to treatment? Fine. You’re late to film? Fine. But I personally did not experience that last year for the first time in my career, so we’ll see what Taylor Jenkins does, our new coach."

The gravity of the situation, as described by Beasley, extended to significant delays in team travel. When Stewart pressed for the teammate most likely to be late, Beasley offered a striking anecdote: "Bro, we literally — if the plane took off 2 o’clock, we weren’t leaving until 4:30. I’m being so serious bro. It was crazy. Guys were hours late to the plane. It got to the point where I just knew not to show up until like an hour after they said the plane was taking off. It was crazy. But that’s easy: Giannis. Giannis is gonna show up whenever he wants really, you know? I think that it kinda just came with the territory. and once I saw what was going down, I was like ‘Hey man, more power to you. They ain’t gonna fine you. Do what you do.’"

Beasley’s direct identification of Antetokounmpo is particularly noteworthy, given the Greek Freak’s revered status within the league and the Bucks organization. Antetokounmpo has consistently maintained a reputation for dedication, hard work, and professionalism throughout his career, which includes two MVP awards and an NBA championship. Public criticism of his conduct from a former teammate is a rare occurrence. Beasley’s comments suggest that Antetokounmpo’s perceived autonomy in the team’s internal operations contributed to a broader breakdown of discipline that went unaddressed by the coaching staff.

The Bucks’ 2023-2024 season was marked by significant upheaval and underperformance. The team entered the season with high expectations after acquiring All-Star Damian Lillard in the offseason, forming a formidable duo with Antetokounmpo. However, the chemistry never fully materialized, leading to the dismissal of first-year head coach Adrian Griffin in January 2024, despite the team holding a 30-13 record at the time. Doc Rivers, a veteran coach with a championship pedigree, was subsequently hired to guide the team. Rivers’ tenure, however, saw the Bucks finish the regular season with a 17-19 record under his leadership, culminating in a sixth-seed finish in the Eastern Conference and a first-round playoff exit to the Indiana Pacers.

The statistical performance of the Bucks during this period corroborates the narrative of a team struggling with fundamental aspects of team play and discipline. Milwaukee’s defensive rating plummeted to 118.3, ranking 26th in the league, a significant decline for a team that historically prided itself on defensive prowess. Their turnover rate of 15.4% was the 25th worst in the NBA, indicating a carelessness with possessions that often led to easy opportunities for opponents. These figures suggest that the "carelessness" Beasley described in team meetings and travel may have indeed translated directly to the on-court product. A team that lacks internal accountability for punctuality and attendance often struggles with the precise execution and collective effort required for high-level defense and ball security.

Beasley’s specific anecdotes align with previous reports concerning a "toxic" atmosphere within the Bucks organization last season. An ESPN report earlier this year cited a source describing the team situation as "as toxic… as any in the league." These various accounts collectively paint a picture of a fractured locker room and an environment lacking the cohesion typically found in championship-contending teams. The failure to address basic disciplinary issues, as alleged by Beasley, could be interpreted as a significant factor in the team’s inability to live up to its talent level.

Malik Beasley, who is now a guard for the Philadelphia 76ers, made these comments as he transitions to a new team, providing a perspective unencumbered by future team dynamics in Milwaukee. This context lends credence to the idea that his candor might be linked to the current uncertainties surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo’s long-term future with the Bucks. Antetokounmpo’s contract status has been a subject of intense speculation. He is currently under contract through the 2026-27 season, with a player option for the 2027-28 season. He becomes eligible for a contract extension in the 2025 offseason, a pivotal moment for the franchise.

Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam recently addressed the speculation regarding Antetokounmpo’s future during Taylor Jenkins’ introductory press conference, indicating that a decision on Antetokounmpo’s long-term commitment would be made before the 2026 NBA Draft in late June. Haslam underscored Antetokounmpo’s immense value to the franchise, stating, "Giannis has brought Milwaukee its second championship and first in 50 years. He’s a phenomenal player, he’s a phenomenal person, he’s arguably one of the best basketball players in the world."

However, Haslam also acknowledged the significant considerations at play: "We will do what’s best for Giannis and what’s best for the organization. We don’t know whether Giannis will stay with us or not, but we’ll work through that with Giannis in the coming weeks." He further emphasized the collective responsibility in this decision, noting, "Jon (Horst) and Taylor (Jenkins), along with (Bucks co-owner) Wes (Edens) and myself, will make that call, and we understand the gravity of that call."

These statements, combined with reports that the Bucks are "open for business" on trade calls for Antetokounmpo, seeking a return of "young blue-chip talent and/or a surplus of draft picks," suggest the franchise is seriously evaluating all options. The implications of Beasley’s comments, highlighting unchecked indiscipline involving the team’s cornerstone player, could factor into the broader narrative surrounding Antetokounmpo’s leadership and the team’s internal culture as the organization navigates this critical juncture. The forthcoming weeks are expected to shed further light on Antetokounmpo’s future and the direction of the Milwaukee Bucks franchise.
