For the first time since the high-stakes drama of the Daytona 500, NASCAR’s premier Cup Series will witness a full 40-car field at Talladega Superspeedway this Sunday. However, the coveted grid positions are not all guaranteed, as five open, non-chartered entries are locked in a fierce battle for the remaining four starting spots, meaning one team will ultimately be sent home after qualifying.
This heightened competition underscores the unpredictable nature of superspeedway racing and the persistent pursuit of a starting berth by independent teams and part-time competitors. The quintet of hopefuls represents a blend of established veterans seeking to extend their careers and emerging talents aiming to make a significant mark on the sport’s grandest stage. Their collective ambition sets the stage for a qualifying session that promises significant tension and high-octane drama.
Leading the charge among the open entries is Jesse Love, piloting the No. 33 Richard Childress Racing (RCR) Chevrolet. At just 21 years old, Love carries the momentum of being the reigning NASCAR O’Reilly Series champion. This appearance at Talladega would mark his seventh career Cup Series start. His credentials at the formidable track are impressive, having secured victories in both the O’Reilly Series in 2024 and the ARCA Menards Series in 2023, demonstrating a clear aptitude for the draft and the unique challenges of Talladega. RCR has utilized a third entry in three races this season, rotating Love and fellow competitor Austin Hill. Their most notable performance of the 2026 season thus far was at Phoenix, where Hill started 27th and finished 21st, indicating the team’s capability to contend, albeit in a limited capacity.
Joining the fray is veteran Joey Gase, behind the wheel of the No. 44 NY Racing Team Chevrolet. Gase, 33, brings a wealth of experience to the track, with 93 previous Cup Series starts dating back to 2014. Should he qualify, this would be his debut in the 2026 season. His history at Talladega is particularly noteworthy, as his two best Cup Series finishes have both occurred at this venue, including a career-best 17th-place result in 2020. Furthermore, his sole top-five finish in the O’Reilly Series also came at Talladega in 2015. The NY Racing Team has faced challenges in securing starting berths, failing to qualify for the Daytona 500 with J.J. Yeley. However, they did participate in the recent drafting race at Atlanta, where Yeley finished 31st. The team demonstrated a commitment to a more extensive schedule last year, competing in over a third of the season, including the spring Talladega race, underscoring their dedication to superspeedway events.

The most seasoned driver among the open contenders is Casey Mears, driving the No. 62 Beard Motorsports Chevrolet. At 48 years old, Mears boasts an extensive resume with 495 career Cup Series starts and one victory, the 2007 Coca-Cola 600. His most successful run at Talladega also occurred in 2007, where he finished sixth. A successful qualifying attempt would see him reach his 30th Cup Series start at Talladega. Beard Motorsports, an outfit aligned with RCR, has a history of competing in numerous Cup Series races over the past decade, with a strategic focus on superspeedways. Their past achievements include a fifth-place finish at Daytona and a sixth at Talladega. While they attempted the Daytona 500 earlier this year, they were unable to qualify. Mears has recently signed a multi-race agreement with Beard Motorsports, with the explicit goal of reaching his 500th career Cup Series start by the conclusion of the current season, making this opportunity at Talladega a crucial step in that ambitious objective.
Representing the sole Ford in the open entry group is Chad Finchum, piloting the No. 66 Garage 66 Ford. Finchum, 31, is looking to make his 14th career Cup Series start and his second of the 2026 season, having finished 36th at Bristol. He has no prior Cup Series experience at Talladega and has never achieved a finish higher than 33rd in his previous starts. The Carl Long-owned Garage 66 team last appeared in the Daytona 500 with Mears driving, securing a 32nd-place finish. Long’s extensive involvement in NASCAR as a team owner spans several decades, highlighting the enduring presence of independent operations in the sport.
Rounding out the quintet is Daniel Dye, who will be making his NASCAR Cup Series debut in the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet, provided he qualifies. The 22-year-old Dye has secured a four-race deal with the team. His recent return to the NASCAR fold follows a brief suspension stemming from insensitive comments made on a livestream, for which he has since completed mandated sensitivity training. Dye possesses prior experience at Talladega in lower NASCAR divisions, achieving a third-place finish in the Trucks series and a tenth-place finish in the O’Reilly Series, suggesting a competitive understanding of the track. Live Fast Motorsports, owned by B.J. McLeod, has made two starts this season with McLeod himself behind the wheel at Daytona and Atlanta. The team, which previously operated as a full-time entry before selling its charter for approximately $40 million, now participates in a select number of races annually. They have a history of achieving top-20 finishes at Talladega.
A critical factor in determining the starting grid will be the weather. In the event of qualifying being canceled due to inclement weather, the No. 62 driven by Casey Mears would not qualify, a stark reminder of the precarious position of open entries. This scenario would significantly impact Mears’ pursuit of his 500th career start and further tighten the competition for the remaining spots.
