Elliott’s Calculated Gamble Pays Off with Dramatic Martinsville Victory

Martinsville Speedway, VA – Chase Elliott piloted his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to victory lane at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday, capitalizing on a strategic pit stop call that vaulted him to the lead in the closing laps of the NASCAR Cup Series race. This marks the first win of the 2026 season for Hendrick Motorsports and the 31st career Cup Series triumph for Elliott.

The pivotal moment came during a crucial green-flag pit stop cycle within the final 100 laps. While many competitors opted for a traditional two-stop strategy, Elliott’s crew chief, Alan Gustafson, made the bold decision to short pit, bringing the No. 9 into the pits earlier than most of the top-10 contenders. This gamble paid off when a timely caution flag waved shortly thereafter, trapping many of Elliott’s rivals on older tires and gifting him significant track position.

“We took a gamble,” Elliott stated in his post-race press conference. “We were going to two-stop that last stint. I honestly think it was going to work out really good for us, either way, but just so proud of the team, man. They put up with a lot, and they got to put up with me all the time. I just appreciate them for sticking with me. It sure is a lot of fun when days like this work out.”

Gustafson elaborated on the strategic decision, explaining the team’s predicament. "Super happy that it paid off," he said. "We were just kind of trapped in tenth spot and it’s really hard to pass. We just needed to do something different. Mathematically, it was close for us to either split that run or two-stop it and I just felt like it was worth a shot. When we pitted early, I think it brought a lot of guys down, and that put us in an even better position. Obviously, the caution is great. It gave us track position. The rest is history."

Elliott, who had been running ninth prior to the pit stop, found himself in contention after the caution. On the final restart, he seized the opportunity, taking the lead from Ross Chastain, who had inherited the front position after choosing not to pit under the caution. Elliott then held off a determined charge from Denny Hamlin, who had dominated much of the race, to secure his first win of the season.

Hamlin, driving the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, had a commanding presence throughout the event, sweeping both of the opening stages. He led from the pole position in Stage 1, fending off challenges from William Byron and maintaining control despite brief traffic issues. The stage concluded under caution after Cody Ware spun in the closing laps. Hamlin continued his dominance in Stage 2, once again leading from flag to flag, with Ty Gibbs and Joey Logano in pursuit.

The third and final stage saw Hamlin continue to lead, with Ryan Blaney moving into second. However, the race strategy began to shift as Elliott and Shane van Gisbergen were among the first to pit from the top 10. Hamlin eventually pitted from the lead with approximately 110 laps remaining, allowing Elliott and van Gisbergen to cycle to the front. Hamlin quickly closed the gap on fresher tires and reclaimed the lead with 92 laps to go.

A subsequent caution, triggered by debris from Ty Dillon’s slowing car on pit road, set up the critical strategic divergence. Chastain, running last on the lead lap in 19th, opted to stay out, taking the lead with older tires. This decision, while initially positioning him at the front, ultimately proved detrimental as the majority of the field behind him pitted for fresh tires.

On the restart with 78 laps remaining, Chastain got a strong start, but Elliott quickly moved into second. A multi-car incident involving Bubba Wallace and Hocevar brought out another caution with 69 laps to go. When racing resumed, Elliott executed an outside pass on Chastain to take the lead, a position he would not relinquish. Hamlin attempted to close the gap, but Elliott maintained a consistent pace, navigating slower traffic effectively and keeping the No. 11 at bay. Chastain’s strategic gamble to stay out ultimately saw him fall to 16th in the final running order.

The top-10 finishers behind Elliott and Hamlin included Joey Logano (third), Ty Gibbs (fourth), William Byron (fifth), Ryan Blaney, Christopher Bell, Austin Cindric, Kyle Larson, and Josh Berry rounding out the top ten. Shane van Gisbergen, whose oval progression has been a notable storyline this season, finished 11th after a strong qualifying effort.

Hamlin’s strong performance, marked by his stage wins, underscored his continued championship aspirations. Despite falling short of victory, he remains a formidable contender. His comments after the race reflected his determination: "We gave it our all."

In the championship standings, Tyler Reddick continues to lead, now holding an 82-point advantage over Ryan Blaney. The Martinsville race, known for its short track challenges and strategic complexities, once again delivered a compelling narrative of calculated risks and hard-fought battles.

The NASCAR Cup Series will next head to an undisclosed track for its subsequent event, where teams will continue to vie for points and playoff contention. The season is shaping up to be a competitive one, with established stars and emerging talents all vying for supremacy.
