Michigan International Speedway, Brooklyn, MI – Denny Hamlin’s triumphant victory at the NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday was more than just a personal milestone; it was a deeply felt tribute to the indelible legacy of Kyle Busch. Following his win, Hamlin was seen prominently displaying a custom flag and a commemorative hat, both meticulously designed to honor the two-time Cup Series champion who tragically passed away last month at the age of 41.
The symbolic gesture was not intended for commercial sale, as Hamlin clarified in his post-race press conference. "It’s a one-time use only circumstance," he stated, emphasizing the personal significance of the tribute. This decision underscores the profound respect and admiration Hamlin holds for Busch, his former teammate.
Hamlin’s victory at Michigan propelled him to 63 career wins in the NASCAR Cup Series, an achievement that now ties him with Kyle Busch for ninth place on the all-time wins list. This momentous win followed a previous victory just a week prior at Nashville Superspeedway, where Hamlin secured his 62nd career win. The anticipation of potentially achieving another victory immediately after Nashville led Hamlin and his team to proactively plan a special commemoration.
The design of the tribute flag and hat was a collaborative effort, aiming to encapsulate Busch’s storied career. The visual elements incorporated the distinctive font of the No. 1, associated with Joe Gibbs Racing, and the iconic stylized No. 8, representative of Richard Childress Racing (RCR). This dual representation was intended to acknowledge the two numerical affiliations most strongly linked with Kyle Busch throughout his career.

"It started Monday morning," Hamlin explained, reflecting on the genesis of the idea. "Right after the race, it was like, ‘okay, it’s something we probably ought to get on because we might win next week, right?’ So, we wanted to be prepared for that. Then I’m thinking, do I put the 8? I know him as the 18. I don’t know the right thing, right?"
The creation of such a tribute involved navigating the complexities of intellectual property rights. Joe Gibbs Racing holds ownership of the stylized No. 1 font, while RCR maintains the rights to the stylized No. 8. Furthermore, Michael Jordan, through his brand, owns the rights to the Jumpman logo, which Hamlin frequently features on his own apparel. This necessitated a collaborative approach among the trademark holders.
"It’s like we had to have some collaboration, and I appreciate RCR letting us use the stylized 8 with the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 1," Hamlin expressed. "It was just a happy balance that I felt good about when it all came out. The NASCAR community has kind of just been through it over the last — certainly the last few weeks, but then just generally in the last six, eight months. It’s been tough. I just wanted to pay my respects to someone that I really did look up to and taught me so much as a teammate. There’s nothing we can say or do that’s going to make his family feel better, but at least during that little time, you can pay him the respect that he deserves."
Due to these legal considerations, neither the hat nor the flag, nor any other merchandise featuring the combined font design, will be made available for public purchase.
Beyond the immediate tribute at Michigan, Joe Gibbs, the esteemed owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, indicated that further honors for Kyle Busch are anticipated. The team plans to acknowledge Busch’s contributions during their upcoming celebration with Hamlin at the shop. Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin shared a remarkable tenure as teammates at Joe Gibbs Racing from 2008 to 2022, a span of 15 years that stands as a NASCAR record for a driver pairing.
"We’ll just be talking all that over," Gibbs stated following the race. "We normally have our celebration tomorrow and in the morning we’ll kind of talk about what all we want to do with it, but I would imagine that’s going to be a part of it and that’ll be something special."
Kyle Busch’s passing has left a significant void in the NASCAR community. His career was marked by exceptional talent, fierce competitiveness, and a charismatic personality that endeared him to fans. A two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion (2015, 2019), Busch amassed 60 Cup Series wins, 50 Xfinity Series wins, and 10 Truck Series wins, making him one of the most decorated drivers in the sport’s history. His aggressive driving style and relentless pursuit of victory earned him the moniker "The Candy Man" and cemented his status as a future Hall of Famer.
Denny Hamlin, a veteran driver and prominent figure in NASCAR, has consistently demonstrated a deep understanding of the sport’s history and its key personalities. His actions at Michigan reflect a broader sentiment within the NASCAR fraternity – a desire to acknowledge and celebrate the lives and careers of those who have significantly contributed to its rich tapestry. The emotional resonance of Hamlin’s tribute highlights the close-knit nature of the racing world and the enduring impact of figures like Kyle Busch.
The timing of Hamlin’s 63rd win is particularly poignant, as it places him in the company of legends and underscores the magnitude of Busch’s own achievements. The unique circumstances surrounding this tribute, involving multiple entities and careful design considerations, underscore the respect commanded by both drivers. As the NASCAR community continues to mourn the loss of Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin’s gesture serves as a powerful reminder of the bonds forged on and off the track and the lasting influence of a remarkable career. The ongoing discussions at Joe Gibbs Racing suggest that Busch’s legacy will continue to be honored in meaningful ways throughout the season, a testament to his profound impact on the sport.
