In a dramatic and emotionally charged conclusion to the NASCAR Cup Series season at Phoenix Raceway, William Byron extended a personal apology to Denny Hamlin following a late-race incident that significantly impacted Hamlin’s championship aspirations. The incident, which occurred just laps from the checkered flag, saw Byron’s No. 24 Chevrolet suffer a tire failure, leading to a caution that ultimately altered the course of the title race.
With only four laps remaining in the championship decider, Denny Hamlin, driving the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, appeared to be in a commanding position to secure his maiden NASCAR Cup Series title. He had battled fiercely throughout the season and was poised to lead the field to the white flag, a testament to his consistent performance. However, as the field navigated Turn 3 and 4, Byron, running in second place, experienced a sudden right-rear tire deflation. The resulting impact with the wall brought out a crucial caution flag.
The caution period presented a critical decision for Hamlin and his crew chief, Chris Gayle. Opting to pit for fresh tires, Hamlin rejoined the field in tenth position for the ensuing overtime restart. This strategic gamble, while aimed at maximizing grip for the final laps, left him with an uphill battle. The field, led by Kyle Larson in the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, was able to capitalize on the fresh rubber and track position. Larson, who had led a single lap prior to the overtime restart, ultimately seized the championship, denying Hamlin his long-sought title.
The immediate aftermath saw Hamlin visibly dejected, having been denied a championship he felt he had earned. Byron, equally distraught by the turn of events, personally approached Hamlin to offer his apologies before the official post-race press conferences commenced.

"It just doesn’t seem right," Byron stated, reflecting on the incident. "Yeah, I mean, I think just kind of seeing him, he had beat us, and we’re running second, four laps to go, you go into the wall and cause a caution. It sucks, right? I don’t want to be that guy, even if I’m in the Championship 4. Doesn’t really matter. Don’t want to change the outcome. So it sucks."
The tire issues that plagued the championship race were a recurring theme throughout the weekend. Reports indicated that many teams were running tire pressures significantly below Goodyear’s recommended levels, a strategy often employed to gain a performance advantage. This gamble, however, proved costly for several competitors, including all four Championship 4 drivers who experienced tire-related problems at various points during the season finale. Motorsport.com contributor Bozi Tatarevic had previously provided a detailed analysis of these widespread tire failures, attributing them to the aggressive tire management strategies adopted by teams.
Byron elaborated on the moment of his tire failure, describing the sensation that preceded the incident. "Yeah, I felt something a little funny on that lap," he explained. "Was trying to figure out if it was a tire. I guess we were coming to three laps to go. I was trying to figure out left rear, right rear. About the time I hit the brakes into three, it laid down on the right side of the car and went straight. Yeah, I was hoping it would be a left rear so I could kind of get back, but…"
Despite the disappointing end to his championship bid, Byron concluded the 2023 season fourth in the overall standings. This marked his third consecutive appearance in the Championship 4, a significant achievement in itself, though the elusive championship trophy remains just out of reach. His performance throughout the season, marked by consistent strong runs and a place among the elite contenders, underscores his status as a top competitor in the series.
The Phoenix race, the final event of the NASCAR Cup Series season, was a microcosm of the intense competition and unpredictable nature of stock car racing. While Kyle Larson celebrated his championship victory, the lingering sentiment for Hamlin and Byron was one of what might have been, a testament to the fine margins that often decide racing outcomes. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks inherent in pushing the limits of equipment and strategy, particularly on the sport’s biggest stage. The post-race apologies highlight the sportsmanship that, despite the fierce competition, often prevails in the NASCAR community.
