Brendan Schaub Delivers Blistering Assessment of UFC 332 Title Bout, Labeling It "Worst Main Event in MMA History"

Mixed martial arts analyst and former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub has issued a scathing critique of the recently announced main event for UFC 332, scheduled for October 3 in Salt Lake City. The vacant flyweight championship bout between Natalia Silva and Wang Cong, necessitated by former champion Valentina Shevchenko’s injury-forced relinquishment of the title, drew an exceptionally strong reaction from Schaub, who unequivocally declared it the "worst main event in mixed martial arts history."

The championship contest marks the first time either Silva or Wang will headline a UFC event. Natalia Silva, 27, enters the fight with an impressive professional record, boasting an 8-0 run within the UFC octagon and an active 14-fight winning streak overall. Her ascent through the flyweight ranks has been marked by consistent performances, establishing her as a legitimate contender. Conversely, Wang Cong, 34, presents a more varied profile. While she has compiled a four-fight winning streak since her sole professional loss to Gabriella Fernandes, her UFC résumé includes only one victory over a ranked opponent, a unanimous decision against Tracy Cortez on the early preliminary card of UFC 329 in July. Wang also possesses a significant combat sports background, notably holding a kickboxing victory over Valentina Shevchenko from 2015.

The opportunity for a vacant title arose following news that Valentina Shevchenko, widely considered one of the greatest female fighters in UFC history, would be sidelined for an extended period due to injuries. Her recovery timeline reportedly extends into 2027, prompting the UFC to declare the flyweight title vacant and pave the way for a new champion.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Schaub did not temper his opinion on the selected headliner. "It’s a tragedy of a main event," Schaub stated. "That is, hands down, no exaggeration, that is the worst main event in mixed martial arts history. Wang Cong should never be mainlining a card. Should certainly not be fighting for a title shot. That is mind-blowing." He further argued, "There are several other women that are way more well-deserving. This is literally coasting it in. This is literally going, ‘The fan base ain’t going to do anything. Eat this.’"

Schaub’s primary contention revolves around what he perceives as a disparity in experience and established UFC credentials for a championship headlining slot, particularly concerning Wang Cong. He challenged UFC CEO Dana White to justify the matchup, stating, "I guarantee you if you went up to Dana White and go, ‘Dana, I will give you $1 million, name three opponents Wang Cong has fought.’ He could not do it. ‘How did Wang Cong win her last three fights?’ We all know it’s a decision. Guarantee Dana White cannot do that." He concluded his point with a blunt assessment: "I’m baffled that this is a world championship fight on CBS. It’s just the UFC demonstrating their dominance over the audience."

The UFC 332 main card is scheduled to air live on CBS, a network owned by Paramount Skydance, the UFC’s current broadcasting partner. The partnership, which commenced in early 2026, has expanded accessibility for fans in the United States, allowing subscribers to Paramount+ to watch every UFC event. Schaub suggested that this assured revenue stream from the broadcasting deal has inadvertently led to a decline in the urgency for matchmakers to assemble compelling main events.

"I know the UFC, in hindsight it’s better that the pay-per-view model’s not around for us anymore in America, but this is the byproduct," Schaub explained. "Because now that they know they have your money, they know they don’t have to bank on selling you on $79.99 every month, this is the downside." He emphasized the local context for UFC 332, noting, "The state of Utah pays the UFC to have these big cards. I just want to know who was like, ‘I got it. Natalia Silva vs. Wang Cong.’ And did everyone in the room go, ‘That’s sick’? Because if they did, you should all be out of a job."

Schaub extended his criticism to suggest a form of fan protest, particularly from those in Salt Lake City who might attend the event. He implored local fans to reconsider purchasing tickets as a means of expressing dissatisfaction. "If I’m a Salt Lake local, I would not show up to watch that," Schaub asserted. "It is so discouraging, it is so disheartening that this is the main event and the UFC goes, ‘You’re not going to do anything.’ There has to be some sort of repercussions. If I’m Utah, I’m like, ‘I’m not paying for this anymore.’"

Despite his strong disapproval of the main event, Schaub clarified that his intention was not to undermine the UFC as a whole, but to advocate for an improved product. He acknowledged the strength of the undercard. "Outside of Natalia Silva-Wang Cong, the fight card is amazing, one of the best of the year. All you had to do was give us a suitable main event and this card’s cooking," he said. "This is terrible and all I want is there to be some sort of backlash. All I want is Salt Lake City to not sell this thing out, so it forces the UFC’s hand to give us better main events."

The analyst’s comments have ignited discussion within the MMA community, particularly given the historical context of UFC numbered events and the expectation for marquee matchups. The upcoming UFC 332 will undoubtedly be under heightened scrutiny from fans and pundits alike, evaluating both the championship contest and the overall reception of the event in Salt Lake City.
