Barcelona’s President Joan Laporta is reportedly seeking permission to further increase the capacity of the Camp Nou stadium, which is currently undergoing extensive renovation work. This development comes as the club aims to maximize revenue streams and enhance the matchday experience for fans following a temporary relocation.
After a three-year period playing home matches at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, Barcelona recently returned to the Camp Nou. The stadium is undergoing a comprehensive renovation project with the ultimate goal of increasing its seating capacity to 105,000. However, delays in the construction timeline have meant that only two of the stadium’s stands are currently open, providing a limited capacity of approximately 45,000 seats. This restriction has significantly impacted the club’s revenue generation potential.
In response to the situation, Laporta is planning to request the opening of the two lower stands at Camp Nou. This would increase the stadium’s capacity to 62,000 spectators. The club intends to maintain this capacity level until the end of the current season. The third phase of construction, which involves the upper section of the stadium, is scheduled to commence next season and continue until its completion.
Laporta is currently awaiting approval from the city council to proceed with the proposed expansion of 17,000 seats, with the hope that it can be implemented as early as January.

"Spotify Camp Nou is a shared dream that must become a reality. We are very pleased that our relationship with the city council is going well, I am very proud," Laporta told La Vanguardia. "The construction is progressing smoothly. If there are no unforeseen obstacles, we can reopen the north stand (1C) and also the chant stand at the end of December or the beginning of January," he added.
If the necessary permits are granted, the first match at the Camp Nou with the increased capacity could take place on January 25, when Barcelona is scheduled to face Real Oviedo.
Due to their participation in the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup, Barcelona will play a series of away matches until the beginning of the new year, approximately six to seven consecutive games.
