Veteran mixed martial artist Anthony Smith is slated to return to competitive action as he is booked for a main event bout against Jordan Heiderman in the Gamebred FC heavyweight grand prix, scheduled for October 2 in the Dominican Republic. The event marks Smith’s second appearance under the Gamebred FC banner, taking place as the promotion initiates a new broadcast partnership with streaming service DAZN, which will carry the live card. The announcement, however, arrives amidst significant external circumstances for Smith, who is currently navigating serious legal issues stemming from an incident in Nebraska.
Smith, widely known as "Lionheart" throughout his extensive career, particularly during his tenure with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), will step into the Gamebred FC cage with a professional record reflecting years of high-level competition. A one-time UFC light heavyweight title challenger, Smith faced Jon Jones for the championship in March 2019, ultimately losing by unanimous decision. His career in the UFC spanned from 2016 to 2023, during which he compiled notable victories over former champions and top contenders such as Rashad Evans, Shogun Rua, Alexander Gustafsson, and Ryan Spann. The announcement of Smith’s fight, however, has been overshadowed by the ongoing legal challenges he faces. Smith was arrested and subsequently charged with multiple felonies in Nebraska following an incident that reportedly involved his wife. The specific charges levied against him are severe, including an attempt of a Class 1/1A/1B/1C/1D felony, a Class 2 felony, terroristic threats, and two charges of first-degree false imprisonment. Following his arrest, Smith was released on bail. Crucially, the presiding judge in his case granted him permission to leave the United States to travel to the Dominican Republic for the upcoming Gamebred FC event. This judicial decision allows Smith to fulfill his professional obligations while his legal proceedings continue to unfold. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges, and a status update hearing for his case is currently scheduled for September 21.
Following the public announcement of Smith’s participation in the Gamebred FC event, the promotion issued a statement addressing the decision to book him despite his unresolved legal situation. Lex McMahon, President and COO of Gamebred FC, articulated the organization’s stance.
"As we announce Anthony Smith’s return to the Gamebred FC cage, I want to speak directly about where our organization stands," McMahon stated. "Anthony is facing serious allegations, and like every person in this country, he is entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence while his case moves through the courts. He has pleaded not guilty and that process deserves to play out fully and fairly on its own timeline, without a promotion, a headline, or public opinion getting ahead of the facts."
McMahon further elaborated on the humanitarian and professional considerations underpinning their decision. "Anthony also has a family to provide for and competing is how he does that. Taking away his ability to earn a living before he has had his day in court is not something Gamebred FC is willing to do to him or to the people who depend on him. Jorge [Masvidal] and I have known Anthony and his family for years. What we have seen, up close and over time, is a loving, devoted husband and father – nothing else. That doesn’t mean we are closing our eyes to what has been reported. It means that we also know there is more to this story than has made it into the headlines. And we believe Anthony deserves the chance to tell it fully, in the appropriate setting, not through speculation."
The statement concluded with an emphasis on the promotion’s commitment to fairness and due process, while also seeking to delineate its role from the legal proceedings. "Our support for Anthony going forward is not a statement on the specifics of the case – those will be decided by the court, as they should be. It is a statement about fairness, about due process, and about standing by someone we know until we are given real reason not to. We will have no further comment on the legal proceedings and ask that Anthony and his family’s privacy be respected as this continues."
This position by Gamebred FC highlights a complex intersection between an athlete’s professional career, personal legal battles, and a sports promotion’s ethical and business responsibilities. While some organizations might opt to suspend or distance themselves from athletes facing such charges, Gamebred FC has chosen to adhere strictly to the principle of presumed innocence and the right to earn a livelihood, particularly given the judge’s allowance for Smith to travel.
