A Poignant Tribute: Kyle Busch Honored by Family with Ceremonial Lap at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Charlotte, NC – In a deeply moving display of remembrance and familial love, the legacy of NASCAR icon Kyle Busch was celebrated at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Tuesday evening. As part of the track’s annual Summer Shootout event, a special tribute lap was held to honor the two-time Cup Series champion, who tragically passed away on May 21st, shortly before the prestigious Coca-Cola 600. The ceremony saw Busch’s father, Tom Busch, and his 11-year-old son, Brexton Busch, take center stage, underscoring the profound impact Kyle Busch had on both his family and the sport of stock car racing.

The tribute commenced with Brexton Busch, carrying the weight of his young years and recent grief, waving both the green and checkered flags as the field of competitors prepared for a ceremonial lap. Leading this procession was Kyle Busch’s No. 51 Legends car, piloted by his father, Tom Busch. This symbolic gesture marked a moment of collective reflection for the motorsports community gathered at the iconic oval. Following Tom Busch and the No. 51 machine, the entire field of Summer Shootout participants completed a lap together, a united show of respect for the driver whose presence is so deeply missed. The lap concluded with Tom Busch driving the No. 51 car alone, a solitary figure on the track, further amplifying the emotional resonance of the tribute.

Kyle Busch’s untimely death sent shockwaves through the NASCAR world and beyond. At 41 years old, he was a titan of the sport, a driver whose career was defined by an unparalleled drive for victory and a record-breaking tally of wins. Across all three national NASCAR divisions, Busch amassed an astonishing 234 victories, a figure that stands as the highest in the history of the sport. This monumental achievement solidifies his status as one of NASCAR’s most prolific winners, a distinction that even recent events have highlighted. Just last weekend, Denny Hamlin tied Busch’s Cup Series win total at Michigan, a poignant moment where Hamlin also paid homage to his former teammate with a special flag. Busch’s dominance extended to the NASCAR O’Reilly and Truck Series as well, where he holds the record for the most wins.

The Summer Shootout, a celebrated tradition at Charlotte Motor Speedway that showcases emerging talent and provides a platform for seasoned drivers in various divisions, has become a venue for this heartfelt tribute. Kyle Busch himself was a participant in the 2025 Summer Shootout, competing in the Master’s Division where he achieved remarkable success, securing seven wins, including the final race of the event. His involvement in the series underscored his enduring passion for racing and his commitment to the grassroots levels of the sport.

The current Summer Shootout event also features the burgeoning racing career of Kyle Busch’s son, Brexton. Less than a month after his father’s passing, Brexton is actively competing, demonstrating a remarkable resilience and a continuation of the family’s racing lineage. Videos from the track have captured his brother, fellow Cup Series champion Kurt Busch, offering vocal support and encouragement to Brexton as he navigates his own races. This familial solidarity in the face of profound loss has resonated deeply with fans and peers alike. Brexton’s own race on Tuesday saw a dramatic finish, as he secured a second-place position after being challenging for the lead on the final lap.

Following the emotional tribute lap, Kyle Busch’s wife, Samantha Busch, shared a candid and heartfelt message on Instagram, reflecting on Brexton’s return to the racetrack. Her post offered a poignant glimpse into the complex emotions of grief, remembrance, and the enduring power of shared passion.

“Watching Brexton back at the track is both heartbreaking and beautiful all at once,” Samantha Busch wrote. “There are moments when I catch a glimpse of Kyle in him, the same determination, the same passion, the same spark, and for a second it feels like a piece of him is still right here with us. These moments are incredibly hard, but they also remind me that Kyle’s story isn’t over. It lives on through the dreams he inspired and the two children he loved more than anything.”

She further elaborated on a promise made to Kyle during his final days. “In the hospital, I made Kyle a promise. I promised him that I would do everything I can to help our children pursue their dreams no matter what. For Brexton, that dream is racing. It wasn’t a dream Kyle chose for him. It was something they shared. They spent countless hours talking about race cars, working together, dreaming together, and building a bond around something they both genuinely loved. Racing is what lights Brexton up and as long as it’s the dream in his heart, I’ll be right there beside him, cheering him on every step of the way.”

Samantha Busch also acknowledged the potential future of her younger daughter, Lennix, who recently received a kart for her fourth birthday. “And if one day his dreams take him somewhere else, that’s okay too. And if Lennix wants to get behind the wheel (we just bought her a kart for her 4th bday) it won’t be the same as having Kyle by her side but we will do our absolute best.”

The racetrack, she emphasized, has been a sanctuary and a home for their family for nearly two decades. “The racetrack has been home for our family for nearly 20 years. It’s where some of our greatest memories were made, where our kids grew up, and where so much of our life together happened. Right now when so much of our world feels unfamiliar it’s also one of the few places that still feels like home.”

Despite the profound sense of loss, Samantha Busch conveyed a message of perseverance. “Every time we get to the track, we’re reminded that a piece of our team is missing. The person who should be standing beside us isn’t there. That part is heartbreaking. But it’s also where we feel closest to him, surrounded by the memories, the people, and the dreams he helped build. So, we race on.”

The Summer Shootout continues with its full schedule of events, offering a glimpse into the future of motorsports while simultaneously honoring the indelible legacy of a legend.
