Bristol, TN – Hendrick Motorsports has announced that Alex Bowman has been medically cleared to return to the driver’s seat of the No. 48 Chevrolet for this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Bowman, who has been sidelined for the past month battling symptoms of vertigo, is set to rejoin his team for the highly anticipated short-track event.
The 32-year-old driver’s absence began at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), where he was forced to exit the race mid-event due to his condition. Myatt Snider completed the race for Bowman at COTA. Subsequently, Anthony Alfredo stepped in for Bowman at Phoenix Raceway, followed by Justin Allgaier, who piloted the No. 48 machine in subsequent races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Darlington Raceway, and Martinsville Speedway.
Bowman expressed his gratitude for the unwavering support he has received during his recovery period. "I’m grateful for the support I’ve had from Hendrick Motorsports, my sponsor Ally, our fans and the medical team throughout this process," Bowman stated in a press release issued by the team. "It’s been tough being out of the car, but we all wanted to make sure I was 100% ready before returning. I feel really good, and I’m excited about being at the track with my team and getting back to racing."
To ensure his readiness for competition, Hendrick Motorsports implemented a rigorous return-to-track protocol for Bowman. Earlier this week, he completed several laps in a street car on the road course at the Hendrick-owned Ten Tenths Motor Club. This was followed by extensive simulator testing to reacquaint himself with the demands of race car control and precision. He also participated in pit stop practice sessions to regain muscle memory and coordination. A comprehensive medical evaluation was conducted following these activities, confirming his fitness to compete.

Vertigo, a sensation of dizziness and imbalance, can significantly impair a driver’s ability to perform at the elite level required in NASCAR. The high-G forces, rapid directional changes, and intense concentration demanded by the sport necessitate optimal physical and cognitive function. Bowman’s medical team and Hendrick Motorsports have taken a cautious and thorough approach to his recovery, prioritizing his long-term health and safety above all else.
The No. 48 team, a storied program within NASCAR, has a rich history of success, marked by seven Cup Series championships with Jimmie Johnson. Bowman, who took over the reins of the iconic car in 2018, has established himself as a consistent contender, known for his resilience and speed. His career highlights include five Cup Series victories, with his most recent win coming at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the 2022 season. His return is anticipated to bolster the team’s performance and morale as they aim to climb the standings and contend for race wins.
Bristol Motor Speedway, often referred to as the "World’s Fastest Half-Mile," is renowned for its demanding .533-mile concrete oval. The tight confines, steep banking, and proximity of the walls create a unique and intense racing environment. Short-track racing often leads to close-quarters competition, numerous lead changes, and the potential for significant on-track incidents, making it a test of driver skill, car setup, and strategic decision-making. Bowman’s experience and comfort on this type of circuit will be a key factor as he navigates the challenging conditions and fierce competition.
The team’s performance during Bowman’s absence has shown flashes of potential, with Allgaier demonstrating strong runs and securing respectable finishes. However, the absence of their primary driver has undoubtedly impacted the team’s overall championship aspirations. Bowman’s return signifies a renewed push towards achieving their season goals.

The recovery process from a condition like vertigo can be complex, and his successful return is a testament to his dedication and the comprehensive support system in place at Hendrick Motorsports.
