However, Spire Motorsports’ tribute is focused on another titan of NASCAR: seven-time Cup Series champion and Hall of Famer, Dale Earnhardt.
Hocevar, a driver who has garnered attention, and at times criticism, for his aggressive racing style, will pilot a Chevrolet adorned in the iconic blue and yellow "Wrangler" colors. While Chili’s will serve as the primary sponsor, the aesthetic is a direct nod to Earnhardt’s dominant era with the Wrangler brand. This particular paint scheme draws inspiration from Earnhardt’s 1981 season, a period where his on-track persona and success began to solidify his legendary status.
Dale Earnhardt’s association with Wrangler yielded remarkable results, with 25 of his 76 career Cup Series victories coming under that sponsorship. Four of those wins were achieved at Darlington Raceway, in 1982, 1984, and twice in 1987, underscoring his mastery of the challenging 1.366-mile oval. The choice to replicate Earnhardt’s 1981 scheme is a deliberate effort to evoke the raw intensity and winning pedigree that defined "The Intimidator."

For Carson Hocevar, this opportunity represents a significant career moment. Currently seeking his maiden victory in the NASCAR Cup Series, Hocevar is set to make his 87th career start. While he has achieved two runner-up finishes in his Cup career, his best performance at Darlington to date is a ninth-place result, achieved in last fall’s Southern 500. Tim Forman, Chili’s Director of Media, elaborated on the genesis of the "Marg Machine" initiative. "Last year, we noticed the chatter comparing Carson’s driving style to a young Dale Earnhardt, and it’s only grown louder as big names in the sport make the comparison," Forman stated. "Given the discussion, we wanted to honor Dale’s legacy, using his 1981 paint scheme as the inspiration for what we’re calling the Marg Machine. Spire and Carson were all in, and we hope fans enjoy seeing the iconic blue and yellow on track again." The nickname "Marg Machine" cleverly combines the car’s sponsor with a playful nod to the "Intimidator’s" aggressive approach, suggesting a machine built for formidable performance.
Carson Hocevar expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the collaborative effort involved. "Chili’s always knocks it out of the park with their suit and car designs, and the Marg Machine is no different," Hocevar remarked. "Everyone at Chili’s and Spire put in a lot of work to get the car as close to the original as possible, and they did a great job. We’ve had bold suits in the past, but this might be one of my favorites. It’s truly a privilege to honor Dale’s legacy on Alumni Weekend down in Darlington, and hopefully we can give him and all the folks from Chili’s a great run on Sunday."
This is not the first instance of Spire Motorsports utilizing its No. 77 entry for an Earnhardt-themed tribute. In 2020, Ross Chastain drove a Spire car featuring the same color scheme as the red, white, and blue No. 77 Chevrolet that Dale Earnhardt piloted in his third career start. That particular throwback was sponsored by Dirty Mo Media, an entity owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr., further cementing the family’s connection to such nostalgic tributes. The recurring use of the No. 77 car for these tributes underscores the organization’s commitment to celebrating NASCAR’s storied past while fostering the careers of current drivers.
