Los Angeles Lakers’ All-Star guard Luka Dončić will be eligible to play in the team’s upcoming fixture against the Detroit Pistons, following the NBA’s decision to rescind his 16th technical foul of the season. The technical, which would have triggered an automatic one-game suspension, was initially assessed during the Lakers’ narrow 105-104 victory over the Orlando Magic on Saturday night. The league’s review and subsequent overturning of the foul were announced on Sunday afternoon, ensuring Dončić’s continued presence as the Lakers navigate a critical phase of their season, currently riding a nine-game winning streak.
The incident occurred during the third quarter of Saturday’s contest at the free-throw line, involving Dončić and Orlando Magic center Goga Bitadze. What began as a routine free-throw attempt quickly escalated into a verbal exchange between the two players. The argument continued as both athletes transitioned down the court, prompting a stoppage in play and drawing the attention of the officiating crew. Subsequently, both Dončić and Bitadze were assessed technical fouls for their roles in the altercation.
Following the game, Dončić offered his perspective on the incident, stating that his emotions had reached a boiling point due to alleged personal insults. "I let my team down, but honestly I wasn’t trying to," Dončić conveyed to reporters after the game. "He said at the free-throw [line] he would f— my whole family and at some point, I just can’t stand it and I’ve got to stand up for myself. I know my teammates have my back. I let them down today, but hopefully it’ll get rescinded." His statement highlighted the deeply personal nature of the perceived provocation, which he claimed was delivered in Serbian, a language understood by both players.
Bitadze, however, presented a differing account of the exchange. Speaking to the Orlando Sentinel, the Georgian center denied initiating any family-related insults and instead suggested that Dončić was the first to use inappropriate language. "I have all the respect for Luka and what he has done. And I really respect everybody’s family," Bitadze stated. "Where I come from, it’s really sacred and we really respect each other’s families and I would never directly say that. He just said some inappropriate things in the Serbian language, which, I played in Serbia. I understand, I don’t know if he knew I understood what he said. So I just said it back. And it was nothing towards his family or anybody. His family, I really, truly respect them and that’s pretty much it."

"I’m a fan of his game and don’t want to look like it was directed to his family, or anything. It was just in the heat of the moment. I heard what he said and I felt like I had to respond the same way. So, from my side, if he feels like I said something too much or crossed the line, I apologize as a man. I can take [accountability], but I didn’t say anything but what he said. What he came out and said, I don’t think that’s the truth. I know that’s not the truth. So, I know what I said and that was pretty much it in the heat of the moment. So like I said, some things were said and I apologize if it crossed the line." Lakers coach J.J. Redick acknowledged the difficulty for officials to decipher the specific content of the verbal sparring. "I’m not sure what happened," Redick commented post-game. "I do know that there were certain things said in a language that the referees couldn’t understand in reference to Luka’s mom."
