Denny Hamlin piloted his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to victory lane at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, overcoming an early-season pit road speeding penalty to claim his 61st career NASCAR Cup Series win and the first of the 2026 season. The veteran driver, who also won at the Nevada track last fall for his 60th career victory, held off a hard-charging Chase Elliott in the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in a thrilling finish.
The victory held significant emotional weight for Hamlin. Last season’s triumph at Las Vegas was dedicated to his father, who tragically passed away in an off-season house fire. Hamlin spoke after the race about navigating the emotional toll of his loss and returning to peak performance. "I mean, I knew it took a few weeks to feel like driving," Hamlin commented on his return to the track. "Over the last couple weeks, I definitely regained my love of it, got refocused. These are great opportunities for us. I mean, this is a family sport. My family obviously had so much sacrifice to help me get here. Now that I’ve got three generations of Hamlins following me. It’s great Mom gets to see this. I know Dad’s still saying, ‘that’s my boy!’ Hell of a day."
Behind Hamlin and Elliott, William Byron secured a third-place finish for Hendrick Motorsports, followed by Christopher Bell of Joe Gibbs Racing in fourth, and Ty Gibbs rounding out the top five. The remainder of the top ten was comprised of Chris Buescher, Kyle Larson, Chase Briscoe, Bubba Wallace, and Brad Keselowski.
The race began with Christopher Bell dominating the opening laps in Stage 1, taking the lead from Hamlin. However, the field experienced a moment of high drama when Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen, driving the No. 91 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet, narrowly avoided a significant incident. Van Gisbergen spun sideways after contact with Erik Jones but managed a remarkable save, sliding down the track without bringing out a caution.

Stage 1 ran largely under green-flag conditions, necessitating green-flag pit stops. Several drivers, including Justin Allgaier and Chase Briscoe, were penalized for speeding on pit road, pushing them a lap down. The Joe Gibbs Racing contingent, particularly Bell and Hamlin, showed early strength, with Bell ultimately taking the checkered flag for Stage 1, ahead of Larson, Hamlin, Gibbs, Wallace, Byron, Ryan Preece, Elliott, Daniel Suárez, and Tyler Reddick. Riley Herbst, running 22nd, received the lucky dog free pass to return to the lead lap.
The complexion of the race shifted dramatically between stages. Both Ty Gibbs and Denny Hamlin were caught speeding on pit road during the Stage 2 break, forcing them to the rear of the field. This handed the advantage to the Hendrick Motorsports contingent, with Bell now facing a trio of Hendrick cars on the restart. Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott engaged in a spirited battle for the lead, with William Byron joining the fray to push Larson forward.
Green-flag pit stops occurred again midway through Stage 2. Todd Gilliland and defending race winner Josh Berry were among those penalized for speeding, impacting their track position. In the closing laps of the stage, Kyle Larson was attempting to lap Kyle Busch, and a slight contact sent Busch’s car to the wall. This incident allowed William Byron to overtake his teammate Larson for the lead and secure the Stage 2 victory. A frustrated Busch retaliated with a bump on Larson entering Turn 3. Meanwhile, Carson Hocevar encountered a pit road speeding penalty after an earlier flat tire, compounding his team’s struggles. Byron won Stage 2 over Larson, Bell, Wallace, Hamlin, Reddick, Buescher, Preece, Elliott, and Ryan Preece. Ross Chastain, running 19th, benefited from the free pass to get back on the lead lap.
Stage 3 saw Hamlin orchestrate a remarkable comeback. After starting at the rear due to his pit road penalty, he systematically worked his way through the field. He briefly lost the lead to William Byron in traffic, but this was short-lived as the first and only natural caution of the race was called. Connor Zilisch spun while attempting to avoid a slowing Ricky Stenhouse Jr., damaging the nose of his No. 88 Chevrolet. The caution proved costly for Ryan Blaney and Austin Cindric, who were caught on pit road and lost significant track position.
Christopher Bell utilized the advantageous No. 1 pit stall to win the race off pit road. Chase Briscoe, who had spent 172 laps off the lead lap, received the free pass and charged through the field, showcasing a strong performance. On the restart, Hamlin demonstrated superior pace, surging forward to reclaim the lead from his teammate Bell. From that point, Hamlin maintained control, fending off challenges from Chase Elliott, who finished a strong second but couldn’t quite close the gap.
Following the race, an incident occurred between former Trackhouse Racing teammates Daniel Suárez and Ross Chastain, who were seen in a heated post-race confrontation. The exact details and reasons for their exchange remain under investigation.
This victory marks a significant milestone for Denny Hamlin, adding to his already impressive career tally and setting a positive tone for Joe Gibbs Racing early in the 2026 season. The win also underscores Hamlin’s resilience and determination in the face of personal tragedy. Chase Elliott’s consistent performance continues to position him as a strong contender, while William Byron and Christopher Bell also demonstrated championship-caliber speed throughout the event. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway continues to be a stage for dramatic finishes and compelling storylines in the NASCAR Cup Series.
