Daytona Beach, FL – The roar of the engines at Daytona International Speedway fell silent for Carson Hocevar on Sunday, as his audacious pursuit of a maiden NASCAR Cup Series victory in the iconic Daytona 500 was cruelly extinguished on the final lap. The 23-year-old driver, who had undertaken a demanding triple duty across all three national series during Speedweek, found himself on the precipice of a dream win before a last-gasp incident relegated him to an 18th-place finish.
Hocevar, a rising talent in stock car racing, had demonstrated remarkable versatility and resilience throughout the week. His presence in all three series – the NASCAR Cup Series, Xfinity Series, and Craftsman Truck Series – highlighted his ambition and commitment to gaining experience on the sport’s grandest stage. This demanding schedule began with a promising performance in his Duel qualifying race, where he secured a second-place finish, earning him a sixth-place starting position for the Daytona 500.
However, the preceding days were far from smooth sailing. In the Craftsman Truck Series event, Hocevar’s No. 77 Spire Motorsports truck encountered significant mechanical issues. Despite leading 20 laps at one point, the truck suffered from intermittent power failures, notably shutting down while Hocevar was at the helm of a race-leading effort. The challenges persisted throughout the race, with Hocevar spinning on three separate occasions, leading to consecutive caution periods. Ultimately, these struggles culminated in a 35th-place finish and a DNF (Did Not Finish).
His foray into the Xfinity Series with Young’s Motorsports offered a slightly more measured approach. While he avoided leading laps, a more conservative strategy could not shield him from the chaos of pack racing. Hocevar was caught up in the final two incidents of the race, crossing the finish line in 20th position. Adding to the drama of his Speedweek, Hocevar also found himself in a heated exchange on pit road with Carson Ware, who reportedly took issue with an on-track maneuver.

Reflecting on the turbulent opening days of Speedweek, Hocevar had expressed a hopeful sentiment to Motorsport.com’s Matt Weaver on Saturday night. "I’m hoping I’m destined to have really bad luck, and the Duel went completely fine, so I’m hoping it’s just the fact that I’m running other races that the racing gods don’t like me," he stated, alluding to the perceived misfortune that had plagued his Truck and Xfinity Series outings.
Sunday, however, presented a dramatically different narrative, at least until the final moments. Hocevar’s fortunes appeared to turn as he masterfully navigated the field during the Daytona 500. On the final restart of the race, he executed a decisive move to take the lead from his teammate, Michael McDowell, the reigning Daytona 500 champion. With the white flag waving, signaling one lap remaining, Hocevar was in the prime position to claim his career-defining victory.
The dream, however, evaporated in an instant. As the field jostled for position behind him, Erik Jones, driving the No. 43 car, made contact with Hocevar’s No. 77 Chevrolet. The bump, described as awkward, sent Hocevar’s car into a spin down the frontstretch. Despite the significant loss of momentum and the damage sustained, Hocevar displayed immense determination, limping his damaged Chevrolet across the finish line to secure 18th place. While his best finish of the weekend, it represented a stark reminder of how close he had come to achieving a monumental victory.
In the immediate aftermath of the race, a visibly disappointed but composed Hocevar addressed the media. "The top had a huge run. Jones was just offset a little to the right. I don’t know if I didn’t commit all the way up, or if he just got me off-center, and just hooked me into the wall, and obviously I bounced off of it," he explained, recounting the critical moment.
He further elaborated on his strategy in the closing laps. "Yeah, our goal is to be leading at the white. I feel like I’m a really, really good pusher. And I feel like I do a really good job. The 45 [Tyler Reddick] had the lead, and then 71 [McDowell] had strategy and I pushed him off into the lead. I feel like sometimes we were getting too far out, but I felt like that’s what worked for the move. So, I was trying to just get us going… Obviously, I’m fortunate. Car in my mirror at the white flag, won the race. I think that’s just good execution on our part and everything."
Despite the agonizing finish, Hocevar and his Spire Motorsports team can take solace in the significant points earned during the Daytona 500, a valuable boost as the NASCAR Cup Series season progresses. The series now heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway, a track where Hocevar has previously demonstrated strong form, having secured a second-place finish there just one year ago.
"Everybody cares about this race more than anything," Hocevar remarked when reflecting on his performance in the Daytona 500. "And for us to be up front… I’m really proud of that." His sentiment underscores the immense pride and accomplishment derived from contending for the win in NASCAR’s most prestigious event, even in the face of a heartbreaking conclusion. The experience, though ending in disappointment, undoubtedly fuels Hocevar’s determination for future races and solidifies his status as a driver to watch in the 2024 season.
