Daytona Beach, FL – In the aftermath of a devastating house fire that claimed the life of his father, Dennis, and briefly hospitalized his mother, Mary Lou, NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin has credited Joe Gibbs, his long-time team owner, with providing crucial and unwavering support throughout the past year. The emotional toll of the tragedy, coupled with the ongoing demands of a demanding racing season, has been compounded by personal loss, but Hamlin expressed profound gratitude for Gibbs’ deep personal involvement.
Hamlin, a 60-time Cup Series winner, made these statements on Wednesday during Daytona 500 Media Day, a significant event marking the unofficial start of the NASCAR season. When questioned about the availability of business partner Michael Jordan, whose own father was murdered in a robbery in 1993, Hamlin acknowledged Jordan’s outreach but emphasized the depth of support he received from Gibbs.
"Obviously, Michael reached out multiple times and offered any help we could, especially since we were in (Atrium Health Wake Forest Burn Center) in Winston-Salem and knew a lot of people in that area," Hamlin shared. "We really didn’t talk about that stuff because I had Joe."
This sentiment highlights the unique and deeply personal relationship between Hamlin and Gibbs, the legendary figurehead of Joe Gibbs Racing. Gibbs, who has experienced profound loss himself, having lost both of his sons over the past decade, has served as a mentor and a paternal figure to Hamlin throughout his 22-year career. This shared experience of grief has forged a powerful bond between the two men.

"Joe is someone who is just very special to me," Hamlin stated. "Joe beat me to the hospital the night it happened. The guy is just unbelievable in how he is a leader, and he’s obviously been through it. My personal connection is Joe and always has been since he took over as my at-track dad."
Hamlin elaborated on Gibbs’ consistent presence, noting that the team owner made a dedicated effort to visit his father regularly over the past year, especially after Dennis Hamlin was diagnosed with a terminal illness. These visits, often occurring weekly or bi-weekly, were not merely perfunctory; they involved sharing stories and engaging in prayer, a practice that held particular significance for Dennis Hamlin as he sought spiritual solace.
"He made a point to go, if not every week, every other week to visit over the last year, talking stories and praying with him," Hamlin recalled. "You know, my dad was really trying to get right with the Lord, you know, over the last year and felt like Joe really helped with that."
The commitment extended beyond mere proximity, as Hamlin pointed out the significant effort Gibbs undertook. "Joe, it’s not like my parents lived right down the street. Joe took the time out of his day to go well out of his way to go visit and share stories. My dad really appreciated that." This level of personal investment underscores the profound impact Gibbs had on both Denny and his father during a challenging period.
Despite the personal hardships, Hamlin is preparing to compete in the upcoming season, with the Daytona 500 serving as the season opener. He expressed a sense of measured optimism about his current state, acknowledging the emotional weight he carries.
"I feel like we’re kind of getting back into the swing of things," Hamlin said. "I would certainly be lying if I said I was as highly motivated as I have been in years past. But like I said last year, it’s going to take some time."
However, Hamlin’s innate competitiveness remains a driving force. "I think every day at the racetrack is going to get me there. I am way too competitive to just go through the motions. As we get on the track and go through practice and qualifying, we’re getting there."
He also shared a poignant reflection on his father’s perspective, noting that Dennis Hamlin had witnessed him at the peak of his career last season, when he narrowly missed winning the championship. This memory provides a source of pride for Hamlin, knowing he was able to give his father such a significant moment.
The Daytona 500, often referred to as "The Great American Race," is the crown jewel of the NASCAR Cup Series. This year’s event is particularly poignant for Hamlin, as he navigates the racing world while still processing his family’s recent trauma. Joe Gibbs Racing, a dominant force in NASCAR, has a storied history at Daytona. The team has secured multiple Daytona 500 victories, with drivers like Dale Jarrett and Joey Logano having visited victory lane in this prestigious event. Hamlin himself has come close, with his best finish being a runner-up in 2016.
The season ahead will undoubtedly be a test of resilience for Hamlin and his team. The support from Joe Gibbs, however, appears to be a bedrock of strength, providing a stable and understanding presence amidst the emotional complexities of his personal life and the competitive pressures of professional racing. The bond between driver and owner, forged through shared victories and now tested by profound loss, exemplifies the deep human connections that can exist within the high-octane world of motorsports. As the green flag is set to wave at Daytona, Hamlin will be carrying not only the hopes of his team and fans but also the enduring legacy of support from a true racing patriarch.
