Verstappen Affirms Enduring Bond with Horner Amidst Red Bull’s Leadership Transition

Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 World Champion, has revealed that he maintains consistent and positive contact with Christian Horner, the former Red Bull Racing team principal, despite Horner’s unexpected departure from the Austrian outfit. The revelation underscores a deep personal connection that transcends the professional changes within one of motorsport’s most successful teams.

Christian Horner’s tenure at Red Bull Racing was historic, beginning in 2005 when the energy drink giant first entered Formula 1. Over nearly two decades, Horner meticulously built and led the team to unprecedented success, transforming a fledgling operation into a dominant force in the sport. Under his leadership, Red Bull claimed a remarkable 14 world titles, comprising eight Constructors’ Championships and six Drivers’ Championships. This era of dominance saw Sebastian Vettel secure four consecutive drivers’ titles from 2010 to 2013, followed by Max Verstappen’s three consecutive championships in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Horner was instrumental in cultivating a culture of relentless pursuit of excellence and strategic acumen that defined Red Bull’s competitive edge.

Verstappen himself joined the senior Red Bull squad from its junior team, Toro Rosso (now RB), in 2016 at the remarkably young age of 18. His rapid promotion and subsequent meteoric rise were closely overseen by Horner, who recognized the Dutchman’s prodigious talent and backed him unequivocally. This partnership blossomed into one of Formula 1’s most formidable driver-team principal pairings, culminating in their championship successes and solidifying a bond forged through intense competition and shared triumphs, notably the fiercely contested 2021 season.

However, the final 12 to 18 months of Horner’s reign were reportedly marked by increasing internal strife and a palpable shift in the team’s atmosphere. Reports suggested a period of significant unrest, characterized by a "toxic" environment. This challenging period saw Horner cleared of allegations of inappropriate behavior towards a female employee following an internal investigation. Concurrently, the team grappled with the repercussions of a power struggle within the wider Red Bull GmbH conglomerate, triggered by the passing of its visionary founder, Dietrich Mateschitz, in October 2022. Mateschitz’s death left a vacuum at the top, leading to shifts in executive power and strategic direction that reverberated through the F1 team. During this tumultuous phase, Red Bull Racing’s performance on track also experienced a relative dip, with the team reportedly slipping to fourth in the Constructors’ Championship pecking order at one point, a stark contrast to its customary position at the forefront.

The culmination of these factors led to a decision by Red Bull management to instigate a change in leadership. Horner surprisingly departed the Austrian outfit in July, a move that sent ripples through the Formula 1 paddock. He was replaced by Laurent Mekies, who was brought in from the sister team, AlphaTauri (now RB). Mekies, with a strong background in engineering and race direction, including stints at Ferrari, was tasked with steering the team back to its dominant form and restoring internal harmony.

The transition under Mekies quickly yielded positive results, as noted by Verstappen. The team experienced a significant improvement in morale and performance, which was vital in the intensely competitive environment of Formula 1. While the team’s overall standing and Verstappen’s championship performance remained strong, the internal dynamics were clearly perceived as having shifted for the better.

Verstappen, speaking to Viaplay, offered candid insights into the circumstances surrounding Horner’s departure and the subsequent changes. "Things weren’t going very well for the whole team," Verstappen explained. "In terms of results, there was a bit of unrest in the team and when things haven’t been going well for a long time… in the end, the shareholders also wanted change because they weren’t happy with how things were going either." This statement from the team’s star driver underscored the depth of the internal issues and the broad-based desire for a new direction from the highest levels of Red Bull’s corporate structure.

Despite the professional parting, Verstappen emphasized the enduring personal connection he shares with Horner. "Ultimately, it’s always difficult. You’ve built up a bond with Christian and achieved so much – especially in 2021, those moments too. You’ll never forget that. Christian really went through fire for me. Those kinds of things are always difficult when you talk to each other on the phone." This heartfelt acknowledgment highlights the profound impact Horner had on Verstappen’s career, particularly during the fiercely contested 2021 season, where the championship battle against Lewis Hamilton went down to the wire. Horner’s unwavering support and strategic acumen during that period were clearly deeply appreciated by Verstappen.

The bond between the two extends beyond mere sentiment. Verstappen confirmed the remarkable frequency of their communication, stating, "Every week, every race. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday and usually via text message. But also on holiday, for example. Every week." This regular contact illustrates a relationship that has transcended the professional hierarchy, morphing into a personal friendship built on mutual respect and shared history.

The nature of these weekly exchanges is one of encouragement and continued support. Verstappen elaborated on the content of their conversations: "Of course he knows everyone in the team, but it’s more about ‘I wish you good luck’ and ‘I believe in you’ – biggest fan. What we’ve all been through. But also, ‘you know you can do it’. You know, all that kind of stuff and outside of that, of course, you talk about things other than racing too. Yes, every week. Every race weekend. Even after his contact." This insight paints a picture of Horner as a continued mentor and cheerleader for Verstappen, offering personal encouragement and discussing broader life topics beyond the high-stakes world of Formula 1.

While Verstappen speaks glowingly of his personal relationship with Horner, he subtly affirmed the positive impact of the leadership change on the team’s overall health and performance. Although not directly stating it, his comments indicated that the decision to replace Horner ultimately proved beneficial for Red Bull Racing. "The team is doing well," said the multiple grand prix winner. "We have a lot of confidence. You see people smiling, it’s a nice environment, everyone gets along well and we missed that at one point. The Red Bull style was a bit lost or gone."

When specifically prompted about the team spirit, a crucial element for any high-performing sports organization, Verstappen unequivocally stated, "Yes, and that has definitely returned." This candid assessment from the team’s most influential figure provides significant validation for the strategic decision made by Red Bull management. It suggests that while Horner’s legacy is undeniable, the team required a fresh impetus to navigate its internal challenges and recapture the harmonious, winning culture that had become synonymous with its success. The continued communication between Verstappen and Horner, therefore, stands as a testament to a personal bond that remains strong, even as the professional landscape of Red Bull Racing undergoes a significant and, by all accounts, successful recalibration.
