NASCAR Community Mourns Devastating Loss of Greg Biffle and Family in Aviation Tragedy

Statesville, NC – A somber cloud has descended upon the motorsports world following the tragic loss of NASCAR legend Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina Grossu Biffle, their son Ryder, and his daughter Emma, who were among seven individuals killed in a devastating plane crash Thursday morning at Statesville Regional Airport, located north of Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident, which occurred shortly after takeoff, has sent shockwaves through the NASCAR community and beyond, leaving behind a legacy of a beloved driver and a family remembered for their active philanthropy.

First Sergeant Chris Knox of the North Carolina Highway Patrol was among the first officials to confirm the grim details, describing the scene as "one of the worst crashes" he had personally witnessed. While initial confirmations were cautious, Sergeant Knox later stated definitively that the victims "include Mr. Greg Biffle and his immediate family," a confirmation that was swiftly substantiated.

The devastating news first began to surface through social media channels, notably from Garrett Mitchell, a popular YouTuber known as Cleetus McFarland. Mitchell, who had developed a close friendship with Biffle over the past five years, revealed the family’s presence on the ill-fated flight. "Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, and son Ryder were on that plane… because they were on their way to spend the afternoon with us," Mitchell posted, expressing profound grief. Biffle and Mitchell’s bond was forged through shared passions, including natural disaster relief efforts and Mitchell’s own aspirations in racing, which included sporadic starts in ARCA competition.

A joint statement released by the Biffle, Grossu, Dutton, and Lunders families articulated the profound sorrow and disbelief engulfing those closest to the victims. "We are devastated by the loss of our loved ones," the statement read. "This tragedy has left all our families heartbroken beyond words. Greg and Cristina were devoted parents and active philanthropists whose lives were centered around their young son Ryder and Greg’s daughter Emma (mother – Nicole Lunders). Emma was a wonderful human being with a kind soul who was loved by many people. Ryder was an active, curious and infinitely joyful child." The statement also acknowledged the loss of Dennis Dutton and his son Jack, as well as Craig Wadsworth, describing them as "deeply loved" and "beloved by many in the NASCAR community." The families concluded by requesting privacy and understanding as they navigate their grief and focus on honoring the lives of those lost.

NASCAR itself issued a heartfelt statement on Thursday, reflecting the deep impact Biffle had on the sport. "NASCAR is devastated by the tragic loss of Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, son Ryder, Craig Wadsworth and Dennis and Jack Dutton in a fatal plane crash," the organization stated. "Greg was more than a champion driver, he was a beloved member of the NASCAR community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many. His passion for racing, his integrity, and his commitment to fans and fellow competitors alike made a lasting impact on the sport." The statement also lauded Biffle’s on-track achievements, including championships in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, and numerous wins in the NASCAR Cup Series. Furthermore, it highlighted his significant humanitarian contributions, particularly his efforts in assisting North Carolina citizens in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, where his "tireless work saved lives."

Greg Biffle, a native of Washington state, spent the entirety of his full-time NASCAR career under the Roush Racing banner, now known as RFK Racing. The team also released a statement mourning his passing, underscoring the enduring connection he maintained with the organization throughout his career.

The ill-fated flight originated from Statesville Regional Airport, a facility frequently utilized by entities within the motorsports industry. The incident occurred at approximately 10:15 a.m. Flight tracking data revealed that the Cessna C550, bearing tail number N257BW and owned by Biffle’s GB Aviation Leasing, LLC, departed Statesville at roughly 10:06 a.m. The aircraft ascended to a maximum altitude of 4,300 feet by 10:08 a.m. before initiating a descent approximately one mile from its point of departure. By the time it was eleven miles from the airport, the plane reportedly turned back, attempting to return to Statesville Regional. The final recorded data point at 10:15 a.m. indicated the aircraft was less than half a mile from the runway, at an altitude of approximately 800 feet and a speed of 95 knots (109 mph), before it crashed at the eastern end of the runway.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office was the initial agency on the scene, quickly joined by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the North Carolina State Patrol as the investigation commenced. Airport manager John Ferguson provided a brief update shortly after noon, stating that the aircraft was "fully engulfed" by flames upon his arrival. He confirmed that the FAA was taking the lead on the investigation and that the airport would remain closed indefinitely to facilitate the removal of debris from the runway.

Preliminary assessments of weather conditions at the time of the crash have been provided by AccuWeather. Dan DePodwin, Vice President of Forecasting Operations at AccuWeather, reported adverse weather in the vicinity of Statesville Regional Airport around 10:15 a.m., including heavy drizzle and a cloud ceiling near 1,200 feet. By 10:30 a.m., the cloud ceiling had reportedly dropped to around 400 feet, with heavy rain reducing visibility to less than two miles. DePodwin noted that weather conditions are a critical component of aviation crash investigations, and determining their contribution could take a significant amount of time, potentially months to over a year.

Greg Biffle’s illustrious racing career spanned several decades, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in NASCAR. He secured the NASCAR Busch Series championship in 2002 and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship in 2000. His prowess extended to the NASCAR Cup Series, where he amassed 19 wins. In recognition of his enduring impact, Biffle was honored as one of the sport’s 75 greatest drivers in 2023.

In recent years, Biffle dedicated significant time and resources to philanthropic endeavors. He established the Greg Biffle Foundation, focusing on animal welfare, and was actively involved in disaster relief efforts. Following Hurricane Helene in 2024, Biffle, a licensed pilot, utilized his helicopter to deliver essential supplies to communities in Western North Carolina affected by the storm, demonstrating his commitment to helping others beyond the racetrack. His passing leaves an undeniable void, not only in the annals of NASCAR history but also in the hearts of those who knew him and benefited from his generosity. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
