Phoenix, AZ – Denny Hamlin found himself in a state of stunned disbelief, a palpable numbness settling over him after a devastating overtime finish at Phoenix Raceway saw his long-sought NASCAR Cup Series championship slip through his grasp once again. After dominating the majority of the season finale, a late caution and a strategic gamble on tires ultimately cost the Joe Gibbs Racing driver a title many believed was rightfully his.
Entering the 2025 season finale, Hamlin, a veteran of two decades in NASCAR’s premier series, was widely considered the favorite. His recent victory, his 60th career win, coupled with securing pole position for the championship race, painted a picture of a driver poised to break through. The emotional weight of the moment was amplified by the knowledge that his father, who is terminally ill, could not be present to witness what many hoped would be his crowning achievement. Adding another layer of complexity to Hamlin’s weekend was the ongoing legal dispute between his 23XI Racing team and NASCAR concerning the 2025 Charter Agreement, a background noise that underscored the high stakes of the weekend.
From the outset, Hamlin asserted his dominance. He led an impressive 208 of the 319 laps contested, a commanding performance that left the rest of the field, including eventual champion Kyle Larson who led zero laps, chasing his rear bumper. The No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota appeared to be on a trajectory towards a well-deserved championship. However, the unpredictable nature of NASCAR racing intervened in the form of a late caution triggered by William Byron’s No. 24 Chevrolet experiencing a tire issue.
This caution period forced the race into overtime, a scenario that often reshuffles the deck and introduces an element of chance. Hamlin’s crew, in a decision aimed at securing the best possible restart position, opted for four fresh tires, a move that sacrificed track position. This proved to be a critical turning point. While Larson and other competitors who opted for fewer or no tire changes were able to maintain their positions, Hamlin found himself mired in the pack, struggling to carve his way back to the front on the fresher, albeit more vulnerable, rubber. He ultimately crossed the finish line behind Larson, a heartbreaking second-place finish that extended his winless streak in the championship hunt.

"What can you do? Just not meant to be," Hamlin stated, his voice heavy with disappointment as he exited his car. The emotional toll of the outcome was evident as he shared embraces with his family and team members.
Speaking to the media in the aftermath, Hamlin struggled to articulate the depth of his feelings. "I don’t know," he admitted, his gaze distant. "I really don’t have much for emotion right now. Just numb about it ’cause just in shock. That’s about it." The raw emotion was palpable in the No. 11 pit box as the reality of the lost opportunity began to sink in.
"We’re 40 seconds from a championship," Hamlin continued, reflecting on the margin that separated him from his ultimate goal. "I don’t know. It’s just unfortunate." He drew a parallel to previous close calls, noting, "The only difference before is the cautions came maybe a little sooner than that. I don’t know. Gosh, you work so hard. This sport can drive you absolutely crazy ’cause sometimes speed, talent, all that stuff, just does not matter."
The decision to pit under the late caution was one Hamlin had to reconcile. He explained his thought process, admitting he didn’t anticipate the number of competitors who would elect to stay out or take fewer tires. "I thought, well, all right, let me see where the other guys are at," Hamlin recalled. "Surely they can’t jump too far in front of me. I just didn’t think there would be that many cars that took two tires. It’s really hard to predict how many cars are going to do what, things like that. But yeah, I didn’t think it was over. When I lined up, yeah, row five, I thought, It will be difficult, for sure."
This latest near-miss adds another chapter to Hamlin’s storied career, one marked by exceptional talent and numerous victories, yet notably absent a Cup Series championship. He has now finished as the championship runner-up twice in his career, remaining the winningest driver in NASCAR history never to have claimed the ultimate prize.
With a pained smile, Hamlin offered a moment of dark humor, stating, "In this moment I never want to race a car ever again. I mean, my fun meter is pegged." The sentiment, however, belied the deep frustration and disappointment of another season ending on such a bitter note.
William Byron, whose tire failure precipitated the crucial caution, offered his apologies to Hamlin. "I just hate that it happened," Byron expressed, acknowledging his unintentional role in the championship outcome. "I don’t want to be the reason for that. Denny had a strong car, we all saw it. I’m sorry to them."
The Phoenix finale capped a season filled with competitive racing and strategic battles. While Kyle Larson celebrated his championship victory, the focus for many remained on Hamlin’s agonizing near-miss. His performance underscored his enduring skill and determination, but also the cruel twists of fate that can define a racing season. As the sport looks ahead, Hamlin’s quest for a championship continues, a narrative that has captivated and frustrated fans in equal measure. The "what ifs" from this season finale will undoubtedly linger, fueling anticipation for his pursuit in the seasons to come.
