Phoenix, AZ – Denny Hamlin expressed a profound sense of numbness following a heartbreaking near-miss in the NASCAR Cup Series championship finale at Phoenix Raceway. Despite dominating the race for much of the afternoon, a late caution and a strategic tire gamble ultimately cost the veteran driver his maiden Cup Series title, leaving him in a state of disbelief.
Hamlin, a prominent figure in NASCAR for two decades, entered the 2025 championship decider as a heavy favorite. He had recently secured his 60th career victory and qualified on the pole for the pivotal race, signaling strong form heading into the season’s climax. The emotional weight of the race was amplified by Hamlin’s personal circumstances; he was racing with his father, who is terminally ill and unable to attend the event. Adding another layer of complexity, Hamlin’s 23XI Racing team is currently embroiled in a contentious lawsuit against NASCAR concerning the 2025 Charter Agreement, a background that underscored the high stakes of the weekend.
The race itself saw Hamlin in commanding form. He led an impressive 208 of the 319 laps, a stark contrast to championship winner Kyle Larson, who led zero laps for the majority of the race. However, the complexion of the championship changed dramatically when William Byron triggered a late caution due to a tire failure. This incident forced the race into overtime, presenting a critical strategic decision for Hamlin and the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota team.
The choice to pit for four fresh tires, a move aimed at maximizing track position and grip for the overtime restart, proved to be a double-edged sword. While it offered the potential for a strong restart, it also meant surrendering track position. When the green flag dropped for the final laps, Hamlin found himself starting in fifth place, behind drivers who had opted for a different tire strategy. This proved insurmountable as Larson, who had managed his strategy more conservatively, surged ahead to claim the championship.

"What can you do? Just not meant to be," a dejected Hamlin stated moments after exiting his car, the disappointment palpable. The emotional toll was evident as he first embraced his family and team members before heading to the media center. Notably, William Byron approached Hamlin to offer an apology for the caution that ultimately altered the race’s outcome, even though the tire failure was beyond his control.
Speaking to reporters, Hamlin struggled to articulate his emotions. "I don’t know. I really don’t have much for emotion right now. Just numb about it ’cause just in shock. That’s about it," he admitted. The scene in the No. 11 pit box was one of profound disappointment as the reality of the outcome began to sink in.
"We’re 40 seconds from a championship," Hamlin continued, reflecting on the vast lead he had held for much of the race. "I don’t know. It’s just unfortunate." He drew a parallel to past near-misses, noting, "The only difference before is the cautions came maybe a little sooner than that. I don’t know. Gosh, you work so hard. This sport can drive you absolutely crazy ’cause sometimes speed, talent, all that stuff, just does not matter."
Reflecting on the race-altering caution, Hamlin explained his thought process. "I thought, well, all right, let me see where the other guys are at. Surely they can’t jump too far in front of me. I just didn’t think there would be that many cars that took two tires. It’s really hard to predict how many cars are going to do what, things like that. But yeah, I didn’t think it was over. When I lined up, yeah, row five, I thought, It will be difficult, for sure."
Hamlin’s career is marked by numerous victories but conspicuously lacks a NASCAR Cup Series championship. He has now finished as the championship runner-up twice in his career. He remains the winningest driver in NASCAR history never to have secured the ultimate prize, a statistic that weighs heavily on his legacy.
Despite the crushing disappointment, Hamlin concluded with a wry, albeit pained, smile, remarking, "In this moment I never want to race a car ever again. I mean, my fun meter is pegged." The statement, delivered with a touch of dark humor, underscored the immense emotional investment and the profound letdown of falling short at the final hurdle.
The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season concludes with Kyle Larson as the champion. Denny Hamlin’s pursuit of his first championship will continue into the next season, fueled by the bitter taste of this near-triumph. The challenges faced by Hamlin and his team, both on and off the track, highlight the intense competitive environment and the often-unpredictable nature of motorsport.
