Denny Hamlin closes gap on Tyler Reddick as championship lead hangs in the balance.

The NASCAR Cup Series is witnessing a dramatic shift in the championship standings as Denny Hamlin, driving for Joe Gibbs Racing, has significantly eroded Tyler Reddick’s once commanding lead. Reddick, piloting the No. 45 for 23XI Racing, saw his dominant advantage shrink considerably in recent weeks, setting the stage for a potentially thrilling conclusion to the regular season.

The catalyst for this narrowing gap was a chaotic event at Michigan International Speedway, which featured a record-breaking number of caution flags. During a particularly turbulent restart, Reddick was caught in a multi-car pileup, resulting in his first DNF (Did Not Finish) of the 2026 season. This incident proved particularly costly, as it abruptly ended an impressive streak of 15 consecutive top-15 finishes for the North Carolina native. The same wreck also involved Hamlin, who spun. Austin Dillon, attempting to avoid Hamlin, then made contact with Reddick’s already damaged car, highlighting the unpredictable nature of racing incidents.

Prior to the Coca-Cola 600, Reddick held a substantial 129-point lead in the standings, a margin that suggested a comfortable path to securing the regular-season championship. However, over the past three weeks, Hamlin has systematically chipped away at this advantage. The initial impact at Charlotte saw the lead reduced from 129 to 122 points. The momentum continued to shift at Nashville, where Hamlin secured a victory, while Reddick’s top-ten finish was not enough to maintain his significant lead, bringing the gap down to 97 points.

Following the Michigan incident, Hamlin went on to win the race by a margin of over eleven seconds, marking his second consecutive victory. This impressive performance has propelled him into a strong position as the series heads to Pocono Raceway, a track historically favorable to Hamlin.

The dramatic turn of events has drawn commentary from NASCAR analysts. On the "Inside the Race" podcast, co-hosts Steve Letarte and Kyle Petty discussed the evolving championship picture. Petty expressed his surprise at the speed at which Hamlin has closed the points deficit. "Where he’s at right now, I say yes," Petty stated regarding Hamlin’s potential to take the lead. "Someone is going to have to throw cold water on him to get him to back it down, because they are white hot right now. Everything they do is right. I would have never thought anybody would be this close to Reddick, even in the last race. When he walked off with the regular season trophy, I didn’t think anybody was going to be within 40 or 50 points of him, and here Denny is." Petty further elaborated on his astonishment at Hamlin’s rapid ascent, emphasizing that with the No. 11 car’s current speed and momentum, overcoming them will be a formidable challenge.

Looking ahead, Reddick has several opportunities to stem the erosion of his lead with a schedule that includes a street course event in San Diego and a road course race at Sonoma. Reddick has a proven track record on road courses, notably being the only driver in the past seven road and street course events to defeat Shane van Gisbergen. In contrast, Hamlin has historically struggled on these types of circuits, a fact he has openly acknowledged.

Following the Sonoma race, eight events will remain in the regular season, including two wildcard drafting tracks where outcomes can be highly unpredictable. Of the remaining six points-paying races, North Wilkesboro will host a points race for the first time in three decades. While Hamlin’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell secured a win at the track, Hamlin finished second the previous year.

Iowa Speedway, a relatively new addition to the schedule, has not yielded strong results for Hamlin thus far. Indianapolis Motor Speedway, another significant track, has seen Hamlin perform well, but it remains the sole crown jewel event he has yet to win. Chicagoland Speedway is anticipated to be a competitive venue for all Toyota drivers. However, Hamlin’s strongest remaining tracks are identified as Richmond Raceway and New Hampshire Motor Speedway, both of which are scheduled as two of the final three races before the start of the Chase for the Cup.

The question of whether Hamlin can overtake Reddick for the championship lead is a distinct possibility. However, several challenges lie ahead for Hamlin, and Reddick must avoid further misfortune to maintain his position. The remaining schedule presents a complex dynamic, and the championship race could conceivably extend to the final race of the regular season at Daytona, where the outcome could determine who enters the Chase with the 25-point buffer afforded by the new format.
